Okay I would just like to point out that in the book Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Trillian is described as a dark skinned girl with long black hair, a red hijab, brown eyes, and a long, brown, arabic looking dress.
But in the movie she looks like this:
And in the TV adaption she looks like this:
????????????
“She was slim, darkish, humanoid, with long waves of black hair, a full mouth, an odd little knob of a nose and ridiculously brown eyes. With her red head scarf knotted in that particular way and her long flowing silky brown dress, she looked vaguely Arabic.”
^ The actual description of her directly from the book if you were wondering. ^
In fairness, this is a terrible description for actually telling you anything about Trillian’s race, because “she looked vaguely Arabic” doesn’t make it clear if she is Arab or if Arthur thinks the combination of her dark coloring and her clothes makes her look Arab. And if she’s not Arab, the text isn’t telling us what she actually is.
Likewise, the description isn’t remotely clear about whether the scarf is a hijab or just generally a scarf that Arthur thinks makes Trillian “look Arabic” because he associates head-covering with the Middle East.
Then there’s the word “darkish”, which is the most infuriatingly vague word that Adams could possibly have used. It doesn’t specify a race, it doesn’t even outright say that she’s dark-skinned, it just dances around the implication of it.
None of this is justifying the casting of a white actress as Trillian, because the text is pretty clearly coding her as a person of color. But coding is the key word here. It’s almost like Adams was doing everything he could to avoid designating Trillian as a specific race, or even just outright describing her as dark-skinned/a person of color, and I find that frustrating.
Well, let's look at the full quote in context. We're still near the beginning of the book, we've just met Zaphod, he's speed-boated across Damogran, and he's just landed for the unveiling of the Heart of Gold. We're on an alien planet, following an alien 2-headed 3-armed president, and we've just had descriptions of various alien lifeforms present in the audience, such as the Hooloovoo. In other words, we're as far away from normal life on Earth as we can be. Here's the quote then:
"Everyone beamed at him, or at least, nearly everyone. He singled out Trillian from the crowd. Trillian was a girl that Zaphod had picked up recently whilst visiting a planet, just for fun, incognito. She was slim, darkish, humanoid, with long waves of black hair, a full mouth, an odd little knob of a nose and ridiculously brown eyes. With her red head scarf knotted in that particular way and her long flowing silky brown dress she looked vaguely Arabic. Not that anyone there had ever heard of an Arab, of course. The Arabs had very recently ceased to exist, and even when they had existed they were five hundred thousand light-years from Damogran."
To clarify, this description isn't from Arthur's point of view as suggested above. Arthur is very, very far from this scene, just beamed onto a Vogon ship as the Earth was destroyed. This is the same third person omniscient narration we've had all along.
So why is it so vague then? Coded, as you say? Because we're meant to assume Trillian is not human, like everyone else around her! We're looking in on this extremely alien scene, seeing someone who looks just like an Arabic woman and going "well, no, that can't be... that's just some type of alien who looks an awful lot like an Arabic woman." If right then and there, Adams had written "Trillian was an Arabic woman," that completely undermines the reveal 56 pages later that Trillian is Tricia McMillan and is indeed from Earth.
"It’s almost like Adams was doing everything he could to avoid designating Trillian as a specific race, or even just outright describing her as dark-skinned/a person of color." -> Exactly! Yes! Because he doesn't want us to realize she's a human yet. Personally, when I read that reveal, I immediately went "Oh my gosh, so she really was an Arabic woman!" I think that's the intention.
The Restructural Committee is gathering data that will be sent to the runners of the No. 6 10th anniversary Dystopia Radio event in Japan (find out more about it clicking here).
The results of the survey will be translated to Japanese and accompanied by a collage and/or additional infographics showing some of the activities of the online No. 6 fandom over the years!
We are also collecting answers to the questions posed by the event organisers, and will chose one or two to translate to Japanese and send. Anyone in the No. 6 fandom is urged to participate!
FILL OUT THE SURVEY >>HERE<<
Survey will close September 1st.
And please reblog and spread this post, so that all fans can participate!
You have just two days left to fill out the survey! It closes at 11:59 PM PST on the 1st!
