fair warning this one is a bummer

a lingering scent of something vaguely floral mixes with the mildewy smell of the old box air conditioner unit. it’s been long since the soothing hum of late-summer bugs faded into the sound of morning birds. jill was gone; gone in the way her favorite cereal is still stocked in the pantry, gone in the way you still hadn’t replaced the burnt-out lightbulb she swore she’d change, gone in the way you can’t step foot into the diner you frequented together because you know you should be sitting across from her, toast in one hand and her fingers tracing circles on the other. it’s been well over a month since jill had disappeared, leaving nothing behind but the spare key to your house and a kiss pressed to your forehead. you knew that nothing good would last forever, but god, you had hoped. there was something in the curve of her jaw and the way the light caught her eyelashes that was reminiscent of the things you were told to seek in a church. moreover, the hollow ache in your chest made you something of an adam, rib taken by god to be sculpted into the only thing you had asked for. you knew that the only reason jill had walked away was the very reason you were so fond of her- more than anything, she was selfless. when she is needed, she will walk away from whatever she was gentle enough to build for herself. maybe someday, you’d be walking along the desolate country road when you’d see her- but not before she saw you. she’d call your name in the way that she always did, laughing before throwing her arms around your neck. you finally fall into early-morning sleep, dreaming of some semblance of normal- being her wife, grocery store trips, lazy sundays. somewhere, far across the globe, she’s thinking about it too.

I'm thinking about applying to art school. It's been a dream of mine for a very long time. I didn't go to a traditional high school, so I don't have any actual art class experience. There are no local art classes near me for me to test the water. If anyone can share their personal experience I'd love to know more ^^.
