Today, we're traveling back to ancient Greece, to a place and time of intricate, geometric design from which we still draw inspiration. The Greek Key is a decorative border which is made using a continuous line shaped into a repeated motif. It was commonly featured in architectural carvings, mosaics, and pottery. Today, we're taking a peek into the origin of the kilim rug.  Kilims are steeped in tribal tradition, and they are thought to have been developed during the Neolithic period (roughly 10,200 BCE). A kilim is a type of flatwoven or pileless rug which requires less material and labor to produce. For this reason, they are often less costly and lighter in weight than their pile counterparts. Kilim weaves are found amongst nomadic populations in North Africa, the Balkans, and the Near East into China. The warp (vertical component) is arranged on the loom, and the weft (the horizontal component) is dyed and woven in sections of color to form a design. Because of its elastic properties, cotton is typically used for the warp, and wool is woven as the weft. The nomadic lifestyle calls for utilitarian materials, and kilims are used as floor coverings, animal traps, bags, and draperies. In the month of June, we're going to look at the development of the kilim rug within the context of contemporary design.

It is part of our nature to use boundaries and definitions to make sense of the world around us. These borders, however, are malleable in nature. We see the  fusion of these lines when looking at ikat and chevron inspired flat-woven rugs.
