How do you make those 3D pokemon cards? Specifically, the 3D effect.

i use something called a stencil buffer. it essentially just lets me only show actual 3d geometry when its being drawn behind a specific material. this is what it would look like with the stencil buffer off:

when viewed in real life it looks like this

the geometry is there, but you can only see it through the "window" that i have set up with specific stencil values

i did a very old breakdown of the cards here . also a good site to read about stencil buffers here :)
