Norman Jackson climbed out of a Lancaster bomber onto the wing, in the freezing slipstream, four miles above Germany, to put out an engine fire with a hand extinguisher while the aircraft flew on through the night. It is one of the most physically unbelievable acts of courage in the history of the air war, and the fact that he survived it at all is a miracle.
Jackson was a flight engineer, and by April 1944 he had already finished his tour of 30 missions. He did not have to fly again. But his crew still had sorties to complete, and he would not let them go without him, so he volunteered for one more, a raid on Schweinfurt. On the way home a German night fighter tore into them, ripped open the wing, and set the fuel tank ablaze. A wing fire on a bomber full of fuel meant the aircraft would explode within minutes. Everyone aboard knew it.
Jackson, already wounded by shell splinters, did the only thing that might save them. He got a fire extinguisher, strapped on his parachute, and had his crewmates feed the rip cord out slowly so his canopy would billow behind him as an anchor. Then he pushed himself out through the hatch into a 200 mile an hour wind and hauled himself out onto the wing of the flying bomber, in the dark, at 20,000 feet, and started fighting the fire by hand.
He nearly did it. He got the extinguisher onto the flames and had the fire coming under control. Then the night fighter swung back for another pass and raked the aircraft again. Jackson was hit in the legs, the fire flared back up and burned his hands and face, and he was swept off the wing into the night. His parachute, already burned by the fire, streamed out only partly open and smouldering.
And he lived. He fell four miles with a half-burned parachute and hit the ground with a broken ankle, a shattered leg, and terrible burns, but alive. The Germans found him and he spent ten months in hospital before a POW camp, from which he later escaped. His own crew, who bailed out and assumed he was dead, survived to tell what he had done, and that is the only reason the story is known.
They gave Norman Jackson the Victoria Cross. He climbed onto the wing of a burning aircraft in flight to save his friends, and then fell out of the sky on fire, and got up and walked away from it.

Every restaurant does this now. âAuctioningââŚ
Often.
That would be some real professional development there.

âBeing hated by idiots is the price you pay for not being one of them."
ORâŚas a young new couple starting out with presumably not much finances, presumably student loans, needing to build a life together (a life together that costs moneyâŚlots of money) you could have delayed gratification and financial discipline for the long term, enjoy the occasional nice vacation, invest, and in 10-20 years go on multiple frequent expensive trips. Instead of living a life of perpetual month to month paychecks and constant debt because youâre trying to mimic the never ending and obnoxious âinfluencerâ videos and social media status updates where apparently only spending ridiculous amounts of money is what is going to make you happy as you start your life together. And letâs be realâŚitâs the woman that would want this. Not the man. Honestly the man doesnât care. He wants the girl and something âsimply and niceâ. Itâs a red flag alert for the guy if she insists otherwise.
Imagine such a gift where you did NOTHING ELSE for 40 years and youâd potentially have near a million dollars. But in reality youâd have more. A LOT more, because such a mutual, disciplined lifestyle would ensure you stuck to the plan and added to it all along while enjoying ever more, earned and rewarded, wonderful vacations.
But no. Go on your wasteful, young, entitled honeymoon and come back broke. Same applies to a $20k wedding. Utter stupidity. Good luck with that.
Start investing young, even small amounts make a big difference over time. Be disciplined. Stick to the plan.
Compound interest is your best long term friend.
âEventâ Weddings are a joke.
Why is it revolutionary to know a person?
Someone I have worked with for a decade is retiring. He and I have been close- weâve traveled together, shared meals, talked about our families and our hobbies, spent time. We text. We talk. Weâve know each other for ten years.
I went looking for a gift for his retirement, and found a watch that relates to the specific kind of car that he works on as a hobby. I bought it, and then invited people to chip in if they wanted.
My coworkers are acting like this is miraculous?
âHow did you think of that?â I knew he had a hobby and I googled it?
âHow did you know he works on those?â I listen to people when they talk.
âHow do you always buy such good gifts?â I listen when people talk to me. Most people are dying to talk about their interests. You just have to give them an in. If your memory sucks, start a note in your phone and write down what people express interest in. Look at it every so often before you hang out to refresh your memory.
âI never would have thought of that.â I didnât, really. I just spent 20 minutes looking at eBay and Etsy and a few subreddits. Itâs easy if you try.
Honestly, if you want to make connections with people, express interest in their passions. Itâs easy if you practice it.
