To all the dumb fuckers on this post: “society” as a term and a concept is something that emerged in 18th century absolutist France. It does not, and never has, referred to just a grouping of people. It is a term that first denoted a group of beings under a certain government. Society as a concept is first and foremost an idea of a polity – and if you read any anthropology, you’ll know how loaded that word is and how it cannot adequately encompass, without being dishonest, both a yanomami warrior clan or the ancient Greek polis. And speaking of Antiquity: societas in Latin is a juridical concept, designating a commercial parternership between two free men – that is, it does not include slaves.

And in modern Western history, “society” is a term that historically accompanies the development of biopolitics (that’s Foucault baby!). In the 19th century, with the rise of positivist sociology, an already obscure term came to gain scientific overtones, which politically most often were translated either to colonial rule or to theories of how to manage society. Society then became not only a group of people governed together, but began to be understood as a transhistorical unity that could demonstrate certain eternal “laws” of how humans should and could live together. In Marxist terms, if you will, “society”, as we largely understand it – some mystical totality that can be scientifically understood and through such a knowledge be transformed – is an entirely bourgeois term.

Mad comments here saying OP doesn’t read, but apparently so don’t you, because not even in classical sociology is the term “society” universally accepted as an universal way of classifying human sociality. See Ferdinand Tönnie’s distinction between community (gemeinschaft) and society (Gesellschaft), for example. Or you could stop reading 20th century Leninist propaganda, read some anarchist theory, which actively criticizes the historical baggage that comes with such a innocuous word as “society”, and stop being nerds.
