Taro Okamoto’s Tower of the Sun, created for Expo ‘70 in Osaka, is now open to the public
hi! I haven't found a non-awkward way to do this, so just going for it: I’m a phd student in linguistic anthropology studying tumblr, language, and politics and I came across this a+ post (theweirdwideweb(.)tumblr(.)com/post/163931185654). I know technically it is publicly available content and all that, but it still doesn’t feel right not to ask, so I was wondering if it'd be okay if I used it in my research? Please don't hesitate to say no! It is 110% understandable if you'd rather I not!
You absolutely can and can I tell you how hard I laughed when I found out this is the post
When ICE isn’t cool.
Kal El…. is literally Hebrew. It means Voice of God. He’s a Jewish illegal immigrant. For a reason. He was written in the 30s.
I mean Superman was literally written as an allegory for first generation American Jews dealing with the struggle of assimilation vs maintaining traditional culture. The birth of Superman as a comic was essentially Jewish Immigrant history.
hey guys im hungry should i order some wings
here they come
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
if you want to buy moonstone jewelry like…please be aware that half the people on etsy and wherever selling “moonstone” jewelry are actually selling you opalite which is just….glass with added effects. moonstone and opalite are not the same thing lol….so many people are getting ripped off on etsy because of this and it kind of bothers me
this is real, natural “rainbow” moonstone:
this is opalite, which is synthetic opalised glass:
I’ve been trying to warn people about this for years! It’s such a huge issue, just like heat-treated amethyst being sold as ‘citrine.’
BOOST THIS.
I threw a dog on the ground today 😭😭😭
I am embarrassed by how hard this made me laugh.
I know it sounds like a joke, but “the agriculture lobby” is actually a major part of the reason we don’t have laws that focus more on exploited agricultural workers rather than people doing sexual labour. #sexwork #labourrights
Can you even imagine the havoc it would cause if he deported farm workers? We would all starve. Literally, we would run out of food unless companies could employ Americans just as quickly. They probably can’t because they wouldn’t be able to get away with treating people as poorly as they do the migrants who grow our food.
That is LITERALLY true.
Not to sound like that guy from Parks and Rec but having worked at the Bureau of Labour AND having done research into trafficking—even the companies that treat their workers LEGALLY are paying starvation wages; there are hundreds and hundreds of farm that depend on a mix of exploited and uncoerced labour.
The government has made it incredibly hard for trafficked workers to get justice: IF they are able to get away and report it, they then have to stay in the same geographic location (often dangerous) AND if they aren’t citizens or in the states on a work visa they aren’t allowed to work, but the gov’t isn’t paying their rent or bills or food,
and THEN often ICE will deport such workers because god knows deporting them is way more important than forcing unethical motherfuckers to abide by the law and keeping track of and punishing those who don’t.
And another thing is, agriculture businesses—both plant and animal—often have arrangements with the local law. So they’re given a heads up when a raid is going to happen, and they’re allowed to voluntarily report certain individuals. This allows ‘problem’ workers who have spoken up to each other or supervisors about poor conditions (including assault by documented bosses.)
A small handful of people have their lives destroyed, allowing the companies to say they’re fully cooperative with law enforcement and fluffing out the officers’ quotas by deporting obvious risks to safety like ‘middle aged parent working long hours for little pay to feed their kids.’
And all without harming production. A true capitalist marvel, where everyone benefits, except the exploited workers.
Was chatting with my co-workers in the breakroom today about stuff and I mentioned the one time that I got fired for being gay.
“What? They can’t do that, can they? Really?”
“They can. I mean, they shouldn’t- but they can. I came out to a co-worker and then the next day I was booted.”
“If they’d done that to me, I would have just stolen something out of spite. Like… a stapler or something,” says the janitor.
“Well… I was working for the zoo.”
She paused for a moment and her eyes glossed over. “I woulda stolen so many tigers.”
you are missing something! although those are the boots of the apollo 11 suits, they’re not what was worn on the moon. neil armstrong, not content with wearing just one pair of shoes, demanded nasa make him another, larger and cooler pair of boots just for walking on the moon.
you can see them here, to the right of the suit’s built-in boots.
photos of armstrong on the moon prominently feature the boots!
although i couldn’t find any official nasa photos of the bottoms of the boots, i could find something even more interesting! an x-ray of the boots “taken as a last minute check to see if there were any foreign objects that could compromise the integrity of the spacesuit during the mission, such as broken off tips of needles that were used in the stitching process”
the thick vertical lines are the treads at the bottoms of the boots
on a more pragmatic note: if nasa was faking a moon landing with a $150 billion+ budget, do you really think they’d mess up something as simple as a boot print?
