Okay but, we can all agree that Robby intended on giving Whitaker his apartment from the beginning right?
From the beginning of the season itâs been increasingly apparent that this sabbatical is some form of abstract suicide attempt Robby doesnât intend on coming back from. Heâs started saying his goodbyes and getting things in order, matter of fact I think the only reason he even came in to work was to make sure he could say goodbye and leave the ER in a state he deemed acceptable when it came to his âtemporary â replacement.
Itâs all very planned out and organised, heâs picked a length of time to be gone that isnât too suspicious while also being enough for people to become accustomed to his absence, he was supposed to have a friend come and check his bike while at the hospital, clearly as a way to placate Dana and Jack to show some veneer of safety around the sabbatical. He keeps mentioning the idea of his absence, keeps reminding everyone heâs going as a way of habituating everyone to the idea.
And of course, when someone attempts suicide like this, with such careful consideration and planning. The matter of his belongings has no doubt crossed his mind. His home is likely already payed off (fancy doctor salary and all that), so itâs not like he can just cut the lease, selling it would likely take too long in his mind aswell and would probably seem unappealing given he likely has some level of attachment to it. So what to do? Well, you give it away. Who to is the real question though.
Out of everyone in the cast, Whitaker is the only one that it would make sense for Robby to give it to, Jack will most definitely have his own place that he is already attached to, and he isnât exactly close with anyone else. With Whitaker, heâs someone Robby knows has a difficult housing situation, someone who would accept his offer under the disguise of âhouse sittingâ because itâs Whitaker and heâs too nice to say no. He also stands to benefit the most from it as in Robbyâs eyes heâs a struggling kid who can barely make rent (he clearly doesnât know Whitaker was given his room rent free). So itâs settled, it has to be Whitaker. Thereâs also the narrative idea of handing off a piece of Robby for Whitaker to carry onwards, literally his last act as a mentor towards him will be providing a roof over his head, providing a safe space in the form of his old home in his wake. There is no one else it couldâve been.
Furthermore, the whole scene where Robby makes the offer feels practiced, like it was a conversation Robby had already mapped out and was just looking for the time to drop it, the âAmy talkâ simply provided the best opportunity for him to drop it and leave. A precursor to his final goodbye to his mentee.
But when all is said and done, what I want to know is how far did Robby go with his planning ahead? When Whitaker walks into Robbyâs place for the first time, what will he see? Will the kitchen be stocked with food Robby doesnât eat to give Whitaker a start on groceries, will all Robbyâs clothes spare a couple of Pajama shirts and pants be missing from the cupboards, will every nook and cranny be scrubbed clean and ready for a fresh start for Whitaker. Will Dennis find his mentors house barren and realise in that moment Robby never intended to come home.
