I think the best thing to try is open communication. To avoid exacerbating your anxiety, you could maybe try writing a letter or sending an email. If you worry about their knee-jerk reactions, send this when you are away for a day or two to let them take in the information.

It’s always best to be honest about your feelings. Let them know what you want and what you expect in a respectful, polite way. Let them know what worries you have and the effect those worries have on you.
