A Sculpt I did last night to relax a little. A really fun thing to try. Women especially beautiful ones are always a little hard because if you mess up the proportions or relationships they are ruined. Getting a decent base coat shaders on Andre before I run away to California. I think he is an an okay spot expect for his face, which is nice because I can just upload new maps to the sever and he will update for everyone in Provo. All automatically. He has a far way to go but its fun to see him with some colors on properly. Can't wait until hes reel worthy. Enjoy

These are Andres boots, I have been having so much fun with them, painting anything in Mari is a blast. Especially if its for a character asset. They have much more that needs to be done on them but I thought I would give a little preview. I think I will take them to 80% before I work on other parts of Andre just to have a target & style to shoot for. Make sure to click and see them big and off the white background. Enjoy
Working on Andre, the main character on the current short film I'm working. He is getting close, can't wait to texture him. He is a mountain climber who dreams of climbing the great "Rams Horn" mountain. Concept by the very talented Aubrey Archer. Enjoy
I know, I know, its prejudice... But I just don't trust fish people. I mean look at the guy(?) Tun'arks are always in the middle of some scam or con. Quick buggers get in and out in a flash, and before you know it you've been cleaned out. I just try to steer clear of 'em. All that said they do make a mean class 3 speeder, craftsman ship like you don't see anywhere else in this galaxy. Hope to own one some day... The speeder not the fish. Does put me in a mood for sushi though.
So this was a morning speed sculpt to wake my hands up, pretty quick one, that in the beginning was looking very robotic but then took a turn towards fishy. That happens to me a lot. Limited myself to about 5 minutes to paint it which is always tough. The whole thing was one happy mistake after another. Enjoy
The process continues, its looking better but still has so far to go. I have some anatomy issues and displacement problems so I am going back to tweak the basemesh again (hopefully for the last time). From then on it will be refining maps and shader development. Not to mention the hair pass, which has been giving me loads of trouble. Such if life. Everything is also looking to fractal right now, supr busy, so I am working on proper facepaint mask that will give some areas of rest. So thats the progress check back soon. Enjoy

So there is a thing most artists do when they are feeling a drawing is substandard. When its not up to par every artist has their own "unnatural additive" they try to "fix" the drawing with. One guy I knew always threw in a joint/cigarette, another friend of mines favorite was to throw on moobs, thats right man boobs... Haha we all have something. Mine has always been horns, if its looking like crap throw on some horns to fix it. I included a video that shows a little about how sometimes if you have something that looks really bad, don't just give up, push it and often it will turn out decent. That and you will learn something from the process. So here is my transformation of a Strange Scotsman to the Dark Fawn. Enjoy
Hi all, So step... 42 is Specular, its step 42 because as in Hitchhikers Guide with the number 42, Specular is the most important thing in the universe. This is my rough pass with a spec map and spec roughness map in the scene. Still needs lots of love but getting something in there to refine is important... I am getting some help soon and will get to tuning it. Part of my problem is like humans each orangutan has a much different level of shininess to their skin. We all know the profusely sweaty guy, or the lady with bone dry skin.. thats specular, and thats what I have to nail on Maurice here... Enjoy
Step... whichever number i'm on. All right Maurice here and I have been having some serious arguments about displacement. Ape skin, particularly orangutans is incredibly hard to get right and It was a struggle trying to nail the patterns. I'm getting there though. I did a lot of research and some pretty cool studies I will be posting soon about how I achieved it. But essentially I had to place every pore to figure this out, all painted my hand no Alphas. It was a little rough, but because I put the time to figure out pores it will make the hair pass way easier in the end. So there's the update, Enjoy.
All right, its been a while since you have seen the ol "monkey". Dreamworks came and I had to get some other stuff together for my reel and Rams Horn. But today I sat down and fixed the displacement and got it working in maya. I also threw on the 30 minute diffuse map I did. It has so much work before I can even start sending it out for critiques. But still its a nice feeling to have it all going and working in maya. That's always a fight. Anyways this is the first pass... Enjoy.
Painting! Step 5,
I'm needing a break from painting displacement, so into Mari and the painting process I go. I am just trying to get in base colors and figure out the patterns for the facepaint. I had some serious UV issues I thought I had fixed already but the gremlins in the computer managed to bring them back. Luckily it only set me back and hour or two and its all good now. But anyways that's all you getting from me tonight because i'm getting tired. Enjoy
Step #4!!! Skin displacement,
Now if I worked at Weta I would have these really awesome fancy skin displacement scans. These are the most amazing things ever... Sadly I have only seen tell and heard on them in legend, so I have to do all the displacement by hand. Which means lots of reference and observation. This is probably where I will spend most of my time, but if I can nail this it will really sell the project. Also... the only thing cooler than a orange orangutan is a purple one. Enjoy

So eyes... They are tough, but you have to get them right. I spend a lot of time here. That's the first place people will look when they see this. Once I get these sockets and surrounding areas right I will get into making the actual eyeballs in Maya. Which is fun but I've never got any that read just right, but here's to challenges. Right now I still have a high frequency detail all over and it needs lots of maintaining, but I like to get something down to work with and then polish. Enjoy
