🚨 CW: VIOLENCE AGAINST INDIGENOUS & GENDERQUEER PEOPLE 🚨
In 1513, Vasco Nuñez de Balboa slaughtered 600 indigenous Quarequa people of Panama, including their cacique, Torecha. After finding 40-50 2Spirit people, including the cacique’s sibling, Balboa ordered his war dogs to eat them alive.
Reportedly, soldiers fought each other for the best views of the attack. And yet, all that history seems to remember of Vasco Nuñez de Balboa is his “discovery” of the Pacific. I wonder what Torecha’s sibling thought of the ocean they grew up beside?

Sam was a generous son, brother, uncle, friend, and cat dad, and is dearly missed by his loved ones. He found purpose in caring for the elderly and disabled, testing recipes with his friends, and spending time in nature. Joking and dancing were how he connected with others, spreading laughter and love wherever he went. That’s all he ever wanted - Love.

Updates on the 2024-25 kidnapping, torture, and murder of Sam Nordquist:
All 7 suspects arraigned in court March 11.
They pled NOT GUILTY to all charges. Next court appearance scheduled for May 2, 2025.
Investigators stated that Sam’s murder is NOT a hate crime.
Investigators reason that those involved knew each other, some identified as LGBTQ+, and one was living with Sam. Prosecutors are not pursuing hate crime charges, stating that “to limit us to a hate crime would be an injustice to Sam”, and that 1st degree murder already carries the maximum penalty in NY. Hate crimes are characterized by the federal government as being motivated by prejudice against a group of people, and affecting not only the victim and their family, but communities and nations. Sam’s family have stated they believe his murder was a hate crime and that investigators failed Sam, accusing them of misconduct. Meanwhile, investigators denied the claims, implying they have the full support of the Nordquist family.
The ADA stated that despite the criminal histories of some suspects, “they aren’t similar in nature” to the current charges.
Patrick Goodwin is a lvl 3 sex offender convicted of 1st degree criminal sexual act and 1st degree sexual abuse involving two children under 10. Kyle Sage is a lvl 1 sex offender convicted of disseminating indecent material to minors. Sam’s mother, Linda Nordquist, has said “he looked like he was 15, young”, and investigators have repeatedly stated they have multiple phones and computers in evidence. Additionally, a 12-year-old and a 7-year-old were forced to take part in Sam’s torture.
Precious Arzuaga, in addition to 4 convictions relating to petty larcenies, criminal trespass, and sale of an imitation control substance, faced charges of animal cruelty and failure to provide sustenance to a confined animal. She allegedly locked a dog in a 4x6ft shed with minimal air flow and without food or water; the dog, Princess, was found living in her own waste. Within their descriptions of the alleged torture, which included starvation and the forcible consumption of human waste, prosecutors have stated that the suspects treated Sam “like a dog”.
Thomas Eaves was charged with 2nd degree robbery, 4th degree conspiracy, 3rd degree assault, endangering the welfare of a child, and petit larceny after allegedly “befriending” a teenager with autism, luring him down a trail, then attacking and robbing him with at least 3 other individuals. They left him unconscious with no shoes, phone, or money. The Wayne County DAs Office sealed the case. This was a group of people manipulating a vulnerable individual for an extended period and luring them to a secondary location in order to attack them, then leaving them unresponsive in a place they wouldn’t immediately be found.
Vigils have been held across the country in Sam’s honor, drawing attention both to the increased violence faced by genderqueer people, especially genderqueer people of color, and intimate partner violence:
1 in 10 violent crimes against LGBTQ+ people are hate crimes • Genderqueer people are 2-3x more likely to face intimate partner violence, and 2-4x more likely to experience violent victimization, than cisgender people • 84% of victims of fatal violence against trans people are POC • Nearly 3/4 of violent crimes, and 61% of fatal violence, against trans people is perpetrated against black trans women
Sam was laid to rest at home in Minnesota on March 3rd. He was surrounded by the people he loved most, and who love him just as deeply in turn.
