How to Cast Spells That Work

In her book Wicca for Beginners Thea Sabin says, “When you do a spell, you are telling the universe that you intend to bring about a certain change and you are putting the energy in motion to achieve that end.”

A spell is sort of an energetic shove to get things moving in the way you want them to, and we do this by creating a ritual to build and then release the energy to get things going.

Most spells are based on a principle called imitative magic.

In his book Backwoods Shamanism, Ray Hess says, “Imitative magic means that making a symbolic gesture, when combined with intent and will… can affect the intended change on a grander scale.” [Note: I don’t actually recommend this book, but I like Hess’s definition of imitative magic.]

So, for example, you may have heard of a “cord cutting” ritual, where you symbolically cut your spiritual ties to a person you no longer want to have a relationship with. You’re symbolically creating a separation between yourself and that person, which creates physical separation in real life.

There are four basic components to any spell: your will, your intention, focused energy, and a ritual action. Some magical traditions add extra steps, like casting a circle, but from what I’ve read and been taught, these four basic components are constant no matter which tradition you’re following.

Let’s start with the most important bit: your will. Your will isn’t just what you want: it’s the desire and drive that is in alignment with your highest good. But in this case we’re also talking about will in the sense of willpower — Basically, your will is your personal spiritual authority and the source of your magical power.

Any spell that is not in alignment with your will won’t work. This is why it’s important to be clear about what you want and why you want it before you attempt a spell.

There’s also an element of belief here. Because magic only works when your spells are in alignment with your will, if you don’t believe your spell can work, it won’t. This is because you, yourself are blocking it from working.

The second important component of a  spell is your intention. When you do a spell, it’s important to clearly state what you want to happen. Some traditions will write the intention down on a piece of paper, which is called a petition. Other traditions will use a spoken statement of intention in the form of an incantation. Some witches use both.

You need to be clear about your intention before you begin your spell. Magic will always follow the path of least resistance, so it’s important to be specific. However, I find that magic works better when your intention leaves a little bit of wiggle room. It’s about finding that happy medium.

You also want to keep your petitions and incantations simple. If it’s more than a couple of sentences, you probably need to trim it down a little.

The next important part of a spell is focused energy. Magic is a way of directing energy, and this means that your own energy needs to be focused for it to work.

Don’t get too stressed out about focus. Your spell isn’t going to fail if your mind wanders for a few seconds. But you should set aside some time where you’ll be able to fully dedicate yourself to your spell. Try to find a private place where you won’t be interrupted. Turn off the TV, put your phone away, and try to avoid distractions. You might find that playing meditation music or burning incense helps you focus.

While you cast your spell, keep focusing on what it is you want to manifest. Again, don’t overthink this and don’t worry if your thoughts wander a little, but try to stay in the moment. Repeating your incantation can help with maintaining focus.

The last important part of a spell is your ritual action. This just means doing a specific set of things, in a specific order, with a specific intent behind them. If we go back to our definition of imitative magic, your ritual actions are symbolic of the change you want to manifest.

Your ritual actions do not have to be complex. A very common ritual for spells is anointing and lighting a candle. Making a charm or poppet is also popular. But any action can be a magical ritual if it is done with intent and focus, in alignment with your will. Making a cup of tea or coffee can be a ritual. Running a bath can be a ritual. Cooking food can be a ritual. The only limit is your imagination.

These four things are literally all you need to cast a spell. A spell doesn’t have to be complicated or include a bunch of crystals and herbs to work. You can do an effective spell with nothing but your own mind and body.

Spell Loopholes

Wording a spell correctly is extremely important! We’ve all heard the stories of someone who cast a spell and technically had it come true, but in a way that wasn’t what they actually wanted at all! Here’s a list of common “loopholes” spells will take to get the job done, and how to make sure you get what you want!

🕯Taking its time- “I want money,” you tell the Universe, hoping to get some help with rent. Well, rent comes and there’s no extra cash in sight! Then, two weeks later, a surprise wad of cash all but lands in your lap. The spell came true, but not in time for when it mattered. This is easily fixed by adding “…by the end of the month,” or specifying what the money is for, which in this case was this month’s rent.

🕯No help needed- “I want money,” you say again. Magic will often take the path of least resistance, so if you’ve already got a paycheck on the way, the spell might not do much besides make sure it doesn’t get lost. There. Money. It can be good to specify that you want your spell to work in addition to everything you’re already doing!

🕯 Bare minimum- This time from your money spell, it arrives on time from an unexpected source! But it’s a quarter you found on the ground. Maybe three quarters. Not much help! If your intent would require the money to be close to a certain amount or any other specific like that, let it be known! The universe isn’t there to make assumptions.

🕯 For the worst- Let’s say you have two friends that have been flirting, so you cast a nice little spell to let any mutual interest between them blossom into a relationship and save them some trouble. It happens, but it turns out they do NOT work well with each other. They are interested in each other, but argue constantly and bring out the worst in each other. The relationship is hurting them both. You had the absolute best of intentions, but there was no way of knowing that would happen! This is why a lot of witches include the phrase, “for the highest good” in their spells, as a failsafe for any unexpected pitfalls like this that may be lurking. The universe will see them but doesn’t know to care unless you specify.

🕯Another layer- Once I made a dream bear to bring me more dreams. Well, I had lots more dreams, but couldn’t remember any of them! I didn’t think that was something I needed to specify. Make sure you hit every point you need to be satisfied with a result.

As a general rule, if my spell includes a prayer or petition of any sort, I take a few minutes and comb through it for stuff like this beforehand. What am I specifying? What am I leaving up to interpretation? Could any of that manifest in a way I would be unhappy with? Take a little time before you start casting to smooth out all those wrinkles! Best of wishes!

WITCHES NEED A SECRET SYMBOL FOR SAFE PLACES

So a lot of us are out of the broom closet so to speak, but many of have to be careful of being public because of the views of the communities we live in. What I propose is a symbol we can put on flyers or in shop windows that means “You’re safe here.”

I don’t believe that a pentagram would work because it’s got so much stigma attached and it’s really easily identifiable. Ideally, we can find something that is not tradition specific. I don’t know. I just want us to be able to put feelers out into the community without painting a target on ourselves for intolerant jerk faces, and I want witchlings that are seeking guidance to be able to do so in a safe environment. I mean, how badass would it be to find a little symbol of solidarity in your favorite coffee shop or bookstore??

Astral Plane: City

City is an astral plane of my own creation! Almost 2 billion individual spirits live here, with over 1.3 billion different species! While being quite a large astal to just dub “City”, the name hasn’t changed from when City was an actual City! City is open to the public and you are more than welcome to visit!

This post will cover all information about City as a whole, history, and all needed information for weather you’re considering visiting or even living in City! If you have any questions after reading this post please do not hesitate to contact me!

History

It started off as a small plane that spirits in vetting for Lorelei’s could make a home while being away from home! I gave them free rein of about 100 ft by 100 ft patch of land and gave them basic minecraft rules. Build whatever you want, but don’t destroy what’s not yours and if you need anything, hit me up! Within a month a small town was made. From there City just kept growing to the boistrus lovely land it is today!

Sections

City is sectioned off in to 11 (really 12) different sections. The boarders are very iffy and no creature is required to live in their designated section. For architectural purposes, it was just easier to build homes for spirits together. Humanoid spirit homes are very different from homes that would be built for hellhounds!

♡ - City Heart

The City Heart is where City originated! Here is where all the action is! This is actually a very large city that’s actually a city. You have to be careful when you walk through City Heart as there could be small creatures walking underfoot. It’s not strange to see incredibly large houses right next to ones that may be fit for your everyday house cat. But City Heart is best known for it’s shops and stores that make up the majority of it. Millions of cultures mix here and are shared and the nightlife is amazing. There are very few actual houses, but tons of apartment buildings. Each one has a wondrous view of the sprawling city below.

1 - Draconic

The largest and most dangerous to traverse part of City would be section 1, where the dragons live. This section covers 3 different types of weather, from extreme heat in the south, to freezing temperatures to the west, to the mountainous area that covers most of the land. There are very few buildings, but that does not mean they live out in the elements. While some dragons do prefer to live outside, throughout the mountains are series of hand - er claw- made caves where many have decided to live.

2 - Winged Creatures

Massive floating chunks of rock make section 2 the most obvious place for those who prefer to live in the air to reside. Or even if you don’t like strong weather, considering how the weather seems to always be sunny with large fluffy clouds in the sky. It rains occasionally, but it’s harsh and strong winds seem to not exist.

3 - Hell Creatures

Fire is section 3′s game! With intense heat, fire, and lava, creatures that prefer these extreme temperatures find homes there. There are few buildings as the intense heat would consume most, but the buildings that do exist are sturdy with amazing architecture, built to last.

4 - Creatures

Section 4 is home to creatures of all sorts! Section 4 is made up of temperate forest and grassland. Foxes, wolves, rabbits, beaves, and all sorts of other more earth-like spirits are found here, but so are jackalopes, naga, trolls, and other friends! There are few buildings as many animals still prefer to live out in the wild, and the structures that do exist are clustered close together.

5 - Fae

While “fae” encompasses lots of different types of spirits, section 5 is one place that spirits can find comfort in the uncertainty and mischievous land of pure fae. While they all must follow the rules of City, things here are far more sneaky, convoluted, and mischievous.

6 - Small Creatures

With the fear of large giants with large feet, section 6 provides solace! Built for the smallest of the small, the little friends can be free of that danger! Almost every spirit here is under 6 inches tall, though larger (but still small) spirits (about 2 feet is the max) live more to the boarders.

7 - Equestrian

With wide open fields, equestrian spirits find home within sector 7. They have plenty of land and farms to sustain their free lifestyle. There are several small buildings where herds would live together, but it’s all too common to find people sleeping together outside rather than in the homes that they built for the purpose of sleeping and living in.

8 - Bi-pedal

For shifters who feel most comfortable in a more human form, or simply humanoid creatures sector 8 has just the stuff for them. This sector appears most like one you may find on Earth. With forests and open land, towns and cities most comparable to Earth are found pretty common. While sector 1 may have the largest land mass, sector 8 has the largest population!

9 - Plant 

And for the entities who do not care for the typical livelihood found throughout the rest of City, sector 9 is pure greenery. While mostly composed of forests and jungle for plant like spirits, there are also open fields of greenery for them to live where they would like to live!

10 - Water

Sector 10 is right along the coast with the most amount of lakes and rivers for freshwater spirits and the ocean really close for the saltwater spirits. Some civilizations are above the water, but twice as many are built below the waves.

11- Ice

On November 18th, 2019, the 11th sector was added to City. Sector 11 is a place for those who prefer the cold can stay. With freezing winds, near constant snow, and ice hard enough to be made into sturdy everyday objects, sector 11 truly caters to those who find anything above freezing to be “too hot”. 

Registration and Entering City

When you first enter City, your energy is registered meaning you’ve agreed to the rules of City. The rules are simple. Don’t hurt others, don’t steal, etcetera. If a fight does break out, all parties are kicked out of City and sent to me or another nominated spirit to keep the peace. If other rules are broken there’s a serious case of them being kicked out of City for the rest of ever. Things are pretty lose and everything is looked over and taken into consideration.  After you first register to join City, you can teleport in an out at will.

When you register you get both a metaphysical and energetical card that has your number, name, weather you have a physical body or not, and other choice information that you can opt to put on it.

If you are just visiting your card will have a V on it, otherwise it will have the sector number where you live. The only other required bit of information is if you have a physical body and if you cannot 100% see in the astral. Popular options that others add are your preferred name (even if it’s a witchy name), pronouns, species, and who to return to if lost.

While you have a metaphysical card with this information, while you are in City there is an information energetical ward around you that has this information. And if anyone wants to look, they can. It’s less like an ID card and more like a “my name is:___” sticker on a shirt.

Money

The currency used in City is called Dreindle. It comes in small coins with the amount it’s worth written on it. When you register to enter City, you get 400 Dr to use however you want. Basics you need for survival are free. Food, water, shelter and anything you may need to survive you won’t ever have to worry about. However if you want a nice room, or good food, or a cool trinket all cost money. If you want more Dr, you have to get money, but that’s almost no problem. In a place where jobs are optional, most people work for the fun of it. Taxes are collected from those that make money and given back to those who enter for the first time.

School

There are three schools in City: kindergarten, elementary, and college. It’s required that every child here know the basics, their language, basic maths, etceteria. It is also required that children are taught about how to be their own species (For example, a dragon must be taught how to dragon). After that it is up to the child (not the parents though they can encourage and such). These basics are taught in kindergarten. Classes aren’t based on age. If an adult would like to learn math, or learn how to write, they can take those classes! Since kindergarten is the only building that teaches languages, there are lots of adults that visit kindergarten.

The next building is elementary. Here the not so basic basics are taught. Things like history on certain planes, more advanced math, biology, energy work, and more are taught here. Stuff that you would expect to learn in middle school and high school. Classes are entirely up for the individual to pick and choose on what they want to learn, and how they want to learn it. If you want to learn biology only from lectures, that can be arranged. If you want to take 8 classes in 8 different ways, we’ll figure something out.

However it’s highly recommended that you become very good at what you are studying in elementary before going to the next school, college. This is where you would go to get a degree. You take a large amount of classes in one single topic. It’s the most advanced classes that are offered. You can learn anything from business to healing to witchcraft to teaching. It’s all based around you, but far more challenging than the other two schools.

The most wonderful thing about these schools though, is that all classes are entirely free, and that everything moves at the student’s pace. If it takes you 8 years to learn basic math, you will have patient and willing teaches the entire 8 years it takes for you to learn it. And not knowing this math will not hold you back from advancing in other classes, unless math is needed for it, say chemistry. But you could still excell in energy work and take classes in college for it while being in basic math.

Weather you live here or simply want an astral education, you can sign up in any building! You will take a few tests to figure out what best course to put you in, and your schedule will be figured out!

To find the schools, simply walk down any road with the intent of going to the school. You’ll find yourself walking to the buildings.

Hospital

Hospital is full of experienced healers of all different species who work here because they want to help others out. Most have over 10 years of healing experience before coming to work at City. When admitted to Hospital, you are appointed a personal nurse of your own species, or close to it, who is there to help you with whatever you need help with. Other than this nurse, everyone who does operations or tests works in teams of 2-3 to ensure best treatment.

But you don’t have to have a serious accident to go to Hospital. Day of check ups, and health lessons or advice can also be found at the main desk at Hospital.

Mental health services are also found here, and therapists can be found here.

Much like the schools, you can find the hospital by walking down any road with the intent of finding Hospital, and suddenly you’ll find yourself there. Also much like schools, you don’t have to live here to use these services!

Other Places of Notice

City is full of wonders and hidden gems. I won’t spoil much fun for those who enjoy exploring, but some towns I suggest visiting during your time in City include (all of these places are marked on the map above!):

Gravestone in sector 1: A large dragon city with buildings made of shed scales. Be careful to not be step on, but a wonderful place to visit!

Cryisti in sector 2: A city of gentle winds built on a flying rock. It has the most amazing library in all of City! Highly recommend visiting!

Grys in sector 3: This small town is built entirely out of fire. I recommend getting fire proof clothing and skin before visiting (this can be arranged in City Heart), but it truly is a wonder to behold.

Holst in sector 4: This place is just really cool. It was built by deer and elk and is just a pretty cool place to visit!

Loval in sector 5: Want to visit a place that resembles an ancient fae city but without worrying about deadly fae tricks? Here’s the place for you. Still be on your toes, but no harm will befall you here.

Ginb in sector 7: I recommend Ginb just because it’s cool to see how centaurs build their homes.

Pyrl in sector 8: The first building here was actually built by hounds, but it was made for humans. The rest of the town was built in the same fashion.

Li in sector 10: This is the only city in sector 10 that is majorly underwater, but those who can’t breath underwater can still visit. 10/10 I do recommend!

One of the most important things I learned in my Language and the Law class is that law enforcement will intentionally misinterpret every type of statement asking for a lawyer as not asking for a lawyer. Even directly saying it like this “I will not speak to you without a lawyer” can be taken as a simple statement of fact rather than a request for a lawyer. You literally have to state “I am now invoking my right to a lawyer” and every time they try to proceed with an interrogation you have to answer every question with “I am invoking my right to have a lawyer present”. You can’t just tell them you won’t talk without a lawyer or that you want a lawyer. You have to state that you are invoking your rights. Otherwise they could just say “well they just said they wouldn’t speak without a lawyer present. That’s not invoking their rights to a lawyer. It’s just stating a fact.” even just stating your right to a lawyer doesn’t count!

PLEASE share this addition. I am a lawyer who works in criminal defense, and this is one of the most avoidable things that people consistently get wrong about the Miranda rights.

Here are some more “ambiguous” phrases which courts have found DO NOT invoke your right to a lawyer:

“Maybe I should speak to my lawyer first.”

“I might like a lawyer.”

“I think I should have a lawyer present for this.”

“Could I speak to my lawyer first?”

“How long until my lawyer gets here?”

And perhaps most egregiously – “Get me a lawyer, dawg – ‘cause this is not what’s up.”

Here are the magic phrases which you need to know if you want to invoke your Miranda rights:

1) “Am I free to leave?”

It’s worth asking this even if the answer is obvious. Even if the officer does not let you leave, by forcing them to admit that you are not free to leave, you are creating a record which your attorney can use to prove that you were in custody. Miranda rights only apply if the interrogation is custodial, meaning that police officers will frequently claim that their suspects were “not in custody” to get around their Miranda rights.

2) “I am invoking my right to remain silent.”

Simply staying silent will not invoke your right to remain silent. As absurd as this is, you must explicitly say that you are invoking your right to remain silent in order to invoke that right.

3) “I am invoking my right to an attorney.”

As stated above, you must be not only clear and unambiguous, but clear and legally unambiguous. Don’t get cute. Don’t get sassy. And on the flip side, don’t get intimidated and use verbal ticks to minimize your request. Say the line with those words exactly – say it clearly, and say it once, and then say nothing else.

Because even after you’ve done all this, the police can still try to get you to talk. They’re not supposed to interrogate you, but they’re allowed to make casual conversation, and if that conversation just happens to circle back around to the thing they wanted to question you about, well, that’s really your fault for talking after you said you wouldn’t, isn’t it? Can’t possibly fault the poor officers when you initiated – if you really wanted to have your rights respected, you wouldn’t have talked to them in the first place.

The police know this, and they will mercilessly exploit this loophole. So, once you’ve successfully invoked your Miranda rights, any and all conversation you have with police officers will put those rights back into jeopardy. 

Putting it all together:

Ask: “Am I free to leave?”

If they say no, say: “I am invoking my right to remain silent and I am invoking my right to an attorney.”

And then shut up and do not say a single thing to them for any reason whatsoever until you have actually spoken to an attorney. Yes, even if it takes hours. Yes, even if they start talking to you about something else.

Finally, a very important disclaimer:

I may be a lawyer, but I’m not your lawyer, and I cannot guarantee that what I’ve just laid out here will always work for every situation. We didn’t get to this bizarre and absurd place overnight – we built this ridiculous system piecemeal, by deciding on a case-by-case basis that certain phrases were “too ambiguous” or certain types of questioning weren’t actually questioning at all. The law is still in flux, and is still fundamentally out to get you, and willing to bend plain meaning beyond all recognition to do it. Even if you invoke your rights perfectly, exactly as I have specified above, there’s a chance that your invocation of rights will be disqualified on some new technicality that no one’s even thought of yet – and that’s precisely the problem.

So there was a very good peaceful protest by…. Lafayette Park? Right outside the White House. They were chanting, they had multiple reporters in the crowd, it was fucking CHILL, people were waiting for Trump to do a speech in the Rose Garden.

Then, out of nowhere, truly NOWHERE, the cops closed in from three directions and threw gas into the crowd. They used rubber bullets on the crowd IMMEDIATELY. One dude told the reporter “They don’t care about new, move.” They drove out the totally fucking peaceful, pre-curfew protestors.

They moved them all out, and Trump started speaking, and you could hear the fucking gas going off over his speech. CNN fucking did a splitscreen to show the peopple being shoved back as the motherfucker stood up there and said he would protect our rights and would mobilize the military against people.

Then back to the reporters, and everyone was forced further and further away. One woman on a bike told the reporter “They are getting the water cannons ready, you wanna move.”
