This week on Cinema science, one of us got to watch Galaxy Quest for the very first time and it was amazing. Here is our take on it’s surprisingly accurate premise.

Video TWO. We tackle Pacific Rim in a desperate attempt to find something scientifically accurate in this totally awesome movie so that we would have an excuse to talk about it. I think we succeeded.

I will be honest, I did have help in making this thing. (For those of you who know what I look like, you might have noticed that is not me in the video). This is one of those things that I always see, and I'm like "Ermergerd so cool." But I never found the time to do it. But turns out, without homework and the motivation to go to the gym, I have all kinds of time! So I found the classiest book I could find in the used bookstore, mod podged the outside, and started cutting.  And cutting. And cutting. And more cutting. Turns out exacto knifes can only cut through like 3 pages with any precision, so maybe picking a book with over 400 pages wasn't the best idea. BUT LOOK HOW COOL IT IS.

Pro tips:

There will be little shreds of paper everywhere. Prepare yourself

Try to avoid mod podging paper towels to the back of the book. It is not recommended.

I tried

Sometimes my attempts at being crafty don't go well. I'm sure this won't be the first time. I had such big plans. SUCH BIG PLANS YOU GUYS. However, I failed to take into account my lack of skill with cross-stitching. So below you can see a hat with some dots on it. In another world, those dots would have been a beautiful 8-bit TARDIS. Alas.

I tried so hard, but I did not have the steady patient hands required to successfully complete this. It would have been so awesome. Dreams crushed.

Well at least the hat was only like 2 dollars. Thank you, Walmart.

Duct Tape Solves All Problems

So we all know those LOTR coasters from the first post are freaking awesome, right? However, what Dodger failed to cover during her video was where to put the coasters when not in use.  One evening while trying to clean my apartment, I was struck with the urge to solve this problem. To attempt to make a 'coaster holder', as one might call it. Being rather new at this whole crafting-on-a-regular-basis thing, the only relevant supplies I had on hand were duct tape and cardboard box. Like any true engineer, I decided I didn't need anything else. And so behold!

And, of course, my apartment is actually messier than when I started because of the leftover cardboard and little pieces of duct tape.

Pro-tips:

When folding cardboard against the grain, cut a shallow slit with an exacto knife along the desired line. This provides a weak point where the cardboard can fold.

There can never be too much duct tape.

ONE DOES NOT SIMPLY DRINK IN MORDOR. But I can now drink ON Mordor. That's right, starting this blog off with a bang: Middle Earth Coasters.

So one day, I was casually watching youtube videos when I saw this. My obvious reaction was "OH MY GOD I HAVE A HOLOGRAPHIC MAP OF MIDDLE EARTH THIS IS HAPPENING." And happen it did. And it was super easy. The most complicated part was wandering around Lowes trying to find cheap ceramic tiles because I was too stubborn to ask for help.

Pro Tips:

Definitely oversize the square when cutting it out. The paper becomes very easy to manipulate after a couple layers of Mod Podge. You can either trim the edges like I did or push them down the side like Dodger.

In the video, Dodger does a lot of distress work on the squares. I tried this, and didn't love it. So I either just left it flat or strategically bent it in random directions. The latter method wasn't super consistant but since my map was slightly... pre-distressed, I had to do something.

The mess created is based purely on your skill with an exacto knife and/or glue. I ended up with little pieces of paper everywhere because I only have one of those skills
