We don’t talk nearly enough about Brum shooting Matthias in Soc ch41

oh i’ll talk about it. i’ll talk about it for the rest of my life, because that shell of a man was so fixated on turning matthias into his successor, so proud of his great work of molding a child who called him father, that he couldn’t stomach the idea of losing him.

if you look at him as just a commander, one of his precious soldiers betraying him should’ve led to the usual fallout. arrest him, punish him, make an example out of him but that fascist pig didn’t stop there. a commander would have followed protocol. brum shot matthias with an aim to kill. that moment was his real face showing, and as readers we see it through matthias for the first time. matthias was never just some random boy he picked up.

he layered fake softness and fake parental affection over every bit of abuse he dealt out. even in ch35 alone, there are like three or four moments where he touches matthias: hugs him twice, squeezes his shoulder and always at the exact moments he wants to keep matthias quiet and obedient. i beg everyone to reread ch35; you’ll notice so many details in how brum acts with him, how he speaks to him, and how matthias slowly realizes that he could never become the kind of man brum was, because they were fundamentally different. and how this man, who forced matthias to see him as a father and a mentor, was actually the villain of his own story.

also, also, also; throughout matthias’s chapters you can follow a very clear line of how, for the first time, he begins to think for himself, and how every new thought terrifies him because he’s finally thinking as an “I” instead of “what would commander brum do”.

what makes it even crazier is how nina sees it all without him ever explaining it. she reads him perfectly. she says it outright: “you don’t know the difference between a good soldier and a good man.” and during those three weeks on the ice, she immediately understands that brum wasn’t just a commander to matthias, he was a father figure and somehow that makes it worse.

there are so many small nuances in his chapters showing how deeply brum planted himself in matthias’s mind, and how stepping into the world alone for the first time nearly breaks him. it directly mirrors enmeshment, where the parent treats the child like an extension of themselves and not a separate person–

i scream as they drag me away.
