i’ve long felt rather strongly that whis has an unusually hard time thinking on himself-- that is, he would have maybe kind of a comically difficult time describing himself, in all honesty, to someone if they asked. and i’ve been thinking for a while that this is at least partially bc on some level he genuinely doesn’t know who he is
maybe in some ways, he’s not entirely meant to be a who, but more of a what
he’s less a true person or individual and more of some kinda inherent force built into the fabric and hierarchy of the universe. while this means he’s probably somewhat efficient with his duties and the outlook he Must have to do his job, it also means his sense of self and identity is most likely necessarily diluted
i had thought maybe his generally affable and pleasant behavior was like a reflection, that he admires these traits in others and has decided to mimic them as well in the interest of being at least superficially someone he can admire, too. or even perhaps that his general desire to get along with others meant that he would see this gregarious and breezy persona as conducive to his goals. but i think some of it also is that he simply has no desire to Be rude, or sadistic, or cruel
whis will almost always choose the path of least resistance, and others are less likely to give you more attention than you need if you are just sociable, chatty, and agreeable enough to distract from your oddness lmao
adding to this weird situation that’s. honestly a bit hard for me to wrap my head around at times is the fact that despite all this said above, i do tend to think of him as being genuinely friendly ‘^’ like he himself can look Behind His Mask, so to speak, and not be able to comprehend anything he finds there, but from an OOC standpoint, that amiability is probably genuine, and the same could also be said of his passivity, his tendency toward elegance (when food isn’t involved....) and propriety, and his sense of humor, and so on
it isn’t that his personality isn’t real so much as it is that he himself can’t separate what is Real about himself and what is manufactured
