Creative Research Presentation including vector illustrations
First Year Reflection
I have successfully completed my first year of Fashion Communication and survived living a solid nine months living away from home.
I feel more in tune with my aspirations and interests more so than the first semester and feel like these have been reflected in the style of my work. Looking back at my reflection post from the first semester, I can happily say I have stopped putting off work and I have reached deadlines without the stress of not knowing if the work would be done in time and I have allowed myself plenty of time to plan the structure of both my written and design work. This is something I will be carrying on with throughout the summer with the summer brief as well as into the second year.
On the downside, although I have mapped out, planned and started my own personal projects they have yet to reach a finished outcome. I really do need to stop pushing aside my personal work as this is something vital to my portfolio and progression with my career goals. Over the summer the side projects I have planned will also come of use to one of the tasks within the summer brief so it is vital I begin to finish what I start.
A major area I need to work on is my spelling and grammar. Even with spellcheck I still manage to slip up and this is something that has been picked up on on the last two of my written feedback's.
I want to begin to apply for internships and work experience in the relevant areas towards my career progression next year as well as work upon my writing and design work. I need to remember to stay focused and to stay motivated.

Purtri Photoshoot
After completing our creative concept research it was time for the actual shoot. We intended to create three images that represented the application of each fragrance. Overall the shoot went well but the consistency of the images between each representation of the application could have been better as the images taken don’t really interlink. For our first group project however, this is a success. The images now need to be edited within post production ready to be used within our presentation.
Anatomy of an Advert
Flicking through magazines to find fragrance advertisements, we deconstructed the images in aid of creating our own for our fragrance brands.
I chose Calvin Klein - Reveal as one of the three advertisements we had to choose (although I only managed to get through two as I was a little too focused on tracing the image).
The composition of the advert is made up of a singular image covering a full page spread. The logotype is featured in the bottom third of the image and is quite large in scale.
The headings of the advertisements are within the second third and feature a minimalist, clean typeface in keeping with the Calvin Klein brand.
There is a sense of symmetry within the design; two models within the middle as well as the type following a centered design. There is little contrast within the advertisement and also no rhythm within the design.
Through this analysis I can see how to create a more dynamic layout to this although it is important not to completely throw out the dynamics that make up a fragrance advertisement.
Caboodle Magazine
I recently was gifted a copy of Caboodle magazine and I have to say it is right up my street. Featuring various bits of illustration Caboodle covers fashion, photography, crafts and much much more.
Something I’ve been looking at within my own work is fusing together illustration within print publications. Perhaps something I could use within my personal branding and portfolio. I really liked the little illustrations that cropped up here and there and they really went with the layout of the magazine.
Th article on Save the Bees used really lovely typography and little watercolour bee illustrations. I’ve been really keen to buy some typography books and this has spurred me to finally make a purchase. A lot of more mainstream publications really forget to utalise hand crafted media and really too heavily on digital media so it’s always refreshing to see layouts like this.
A lot of smaller publications that feature similar topics as Caboodle often really lack in the fashion department and rely too heavily on DIY and thrift fashion. I really loved that Caboodle used garments I can go pick up myself and don’t have to go anywhere near the sewing machine, as well as having where to buy the clothes. The photography was also stunning and the location was beautiful.
Overall, Caboodle has been added to my ever expanding magazine collection and I will definitely try and get a hold of the next issue.
Through our creative concept presentation, we outlined our fragrance and our initial creative concepts to be carried out the following week. When creating the design for the presentation I wanted to reflect a similar colour palette and aesthetic that is used throughout our packaging and logo design.
I didn't want to go over board with water colour splashes so I chose a water colour floral painted pattern instead which I feel went really well with the logo as well as the rest of the presentation.
In the end, I don’t feel our creative concept was communicated as effectively as it could of been as we were lacking in scamps and sketches, something that will have to be worked on in time for our photoshoot.
Consumer Portrait
Visualising data using a consumer portrait presents otherwise boring information, in a visually stimulating way.
Using consumer information, presenting the data visually creates a connection between the brand and consumer.
The image must have stretch to be able to carry a meaning and match the brand. It needs to be able to speak to the consumer and carry the information you need to convey.
Looking at this image I can see the variables that I would be able to change to each different consumer as well as how these could represent meaning. For instance, if I were to use this image as a consumer portrait for three John Lewis consumers the variables that can differentiate between each customer include:
The suitcase: what type of luggage does the consumer use?
The dress: what does the consumer wear?
The bed: what style of bed do they sleep on?
The rug: what do they decorate their homes with?
The windows/back wall: what style of home do they live with?
All these variables can represent purchases, style choices and consumer decisions presented in an exciting on brand way.
Suitcase Magazine
I recently picked up a copy of Suitcase magazine to add to my ever growing collection of print publications.
I was looking for something with a decent balance of text as well as images as I've found a lot of the publications I pick up are very heavy image wise but don’t really have many text articles within them.
Suitcase is a fashion and travel magazine exploring both places to travel, what to wear and what to take with you. I really enjoyed the books, apps and snacks section and thought it was real charming snippet to feature.
The contents page was also something that really caught my attenton. Using the map as design feature as well as a function was something I hadn’t seen before.
Within my own work I want to experiment more with statement type and I really enjoyed the subtle titling featured throughout the magazine. I also picked up on the large margins used, another thing I should look at with my own work.
Fragrance Logo
After receiving our designs from the graphics students, we realised that they had not created us a logo to feature within our work. The logo will ultimately play a big part within the fragrances branding throughout both product and promotion and was something we really needed to have.
After receiving the font name from the graphic design students I was able to piece together a simple logo using the water colour motif that features on our packaging. Using a layer mask I was able to have the font in gold which adds a really nice elegant touch in contrast with the uncontrolled splashes of colour.
Creative Concepts
Following on from our guest lecturers teachings we were able to discuss and develop our ideas with the lecturers help. We got some really good feedback and were able to clarify and we are now able to deliver our brand and product message in a clear and concise way.
A three step morning fragrance routine
Increases the longevity of fragrance wear
When you need your fragrance to work as hard as you do
The Brief We want to answer the question of 'how can we make our perfume last longer?'. By changing the way we think about perfume application and where we apply our fragrance we can increase the longevity of the scent.
The Big Idea By combining three fragrances; a hair mist, linen spray and fragrance balm, a three step routine is created. Designed for the woman who needs a fragrance to work as hard as she does, it is the next essential step in your morning routine.
