Tis’ the season to be artsy! The Angel Orensanz Foundation for the Arts is ready to dazzle you one last time for the 2013 year. We proudly reveal the November-December 2013 Newsletter, Issue #29. The Foundation for the arts is closing the year and jumping right into the new year with the spectacular art show, Miami Art and Design (MA+D) 2014.

This issue previews some of the spectacular sculptures of dramatic series of The Collective Unconscious, by Spanish and international artist, Angel Orensanz. Miami Art and Design will debut in downtown Miami on President’s Day weekend, February 14-18.

The last 2013 issue features four-length articles written by Foundation Director, Al Orensanz, and Foundation writer and blogger, Zoe V. Speas. Topics covered include:

Within the pages of Issue #29, the Foundation has included a special preview of Al Orensanz’s publication, 1986 to the Present: the Orensanz Years. The piece outlines the history of the Orensanz purchase of the Anshe Slonim synagogue on Norfolk Street in the mid-1980s, following the development of the space into the thriving arts foundation as it exists today.

A Window Display? Or an Art Installation?

  Each year, department stores all over Manhattan bring back tradition and holiday spirit by creating window displays. Taking window-shopping to another level, locals and visitors anticipate what is to come behind the glass.  Peeking in you will not only see the fashionable clothes hanging on the precise-put mannequins, you will find that there is much more to the display than fashion. 

The best stores in New York City find a way to exhibit the bringing of the holiday season mixed with trending fashion. While the goal is entice buyers to get off their bum and shop in their store, window displays are designing and building art installations of some sort to reel in shoppers.

On November 28th, Macy’s on Herald Square unveiled their work of artistry and boy is it dazzling!  While Macy’s never fails to please us, this year’s display, “A New York Holiday,” is what I call a street-state-of-the-art display for technology. This art installation not only uses multimedia in ways where it stands out amongst the others, but the Macy’s Director of Window Paul Olszewski, points out that they are not using technology just to use technology.

 “This year we really pushed technology- and it was a delicate balance between technology and true artistry of the craftsmanship of windows. So, we didn’t use technology to use the sake of technology, we used it to enhance the artistry.”

So take a moment to gaze at the sparkling wonder behind the glass that seems to wow us every year. Or better yet, if you live in the area, I recommend you take a stroll by these spectacular annual shopping scenes.

Art Basel Miami Beach 2014: COMING SOON!

Art Basel Miami Beach 2014 is steadily approaching. This global event features top galleries and artists from all over the world presenting work such as, sculptures, art installations, paintings, films, and more, in the sunny beaches of Miami. 

This year Art Basel will be celebrating it’s 45th edition and with some changes from last year, art frenzies are able to explore more dimensions of contemporary and modern art.

One of the best parts of Art Basel is being able to stroll the streets and take in all the beautiful free art in perfect weather. The sun-drenched landscape of Miami Beach is transformed into an outdoor exhibition space. 

Art Basel is truly an event you do not want to miss. So art lovers, hold tight while we gradually get closer to the event that everyone can’t stop talking about, Art Basel Miami Beach 2014.

It's that time of year again!

It's hard to find anyone who disagrees - New York City at the holidays is the most beautiful place on earth. 

And to kick things off after we've all recovered from our turkey-comas and post-thanksgiving shopping mania... celebrate the beginning of the Christmas season with the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree Lighting of 2014 this Wednesday, December 4th at Rockefeller Center. 

Thousands upon thousands of people line the streets of Rockefeller Center for this beautiful, iconic ceremony, so get there early. Festivities kick off at 7pm.

You'd better believe the Angel Orensanz Foundation for the Arts will be in attendance - we'll have the pictures to share with you on Thursday, December 5th!

Start tearing them down, folks. Here comes the part where all of the Banksy street art begins to fall away from the walls and buildings upon which they were installed, irritatingly in parallel with the leaves just now starting to trickle from the branches of trees as fall hits us full swing. 

There's a LIST of the remaining Banksy pieces still functioning and intact, so check them out while you can.

Happy Post-Halloween, everybody!

Did we all survive? Feeling good? Feeling strong? Excellent! 

From all of us here at the angelorensanzfoundation, thank you for a delicious season of jack-o-lanterns, candycorn, and slightly sinister silliness.

Cancelled last year as a result of the devastation of Superstorm Sandy, the New York City Halloween Parade of 2013 returned and dominated a route from Sixth Avenue and Spring Street to 16th Street. Greenwich Village was a storm of gaudiness and ghoulishness, celebrating one of the favorites of holidays and the parade's 40th anniversary this year. 

And in case you made it to Spring St and couldn't exit the subway because of the hoards of people gathered to watch ...

...we found pictures!

Have a happy Turkey-month everybody!

Now go back to your hoards of candy and sugar yourself silly. That's my plan, anyway.

Guys. This is Katy Gunn. 

Last night I had the great good fortune to see Katy perform at the Lower East Side music spot, The Living Room. I was invited there by the lovely ladies of a beautiful LES art gallery called NOoSphere (thank you Sol Kjøk and Annemarta S. Mugaas), where Katy acts as their official “musician-in-residence”. 

Anyway. KATY GUNN. She’s an incredibly talented, incredibly funny singer/songwriter who just happens to be a classically trained violinist. Katy performs with her brother, Fred Baker, who is able to do some pretty insane things with a Macbook and a pad. Click the link of Fred’s name to check out his music video “Pocket Full of Detritus”, which Katy describes as “poetry rap.”

For me, Katy’s music is like an amped up hybrid of Kimbra and Fiona Apple. Check it out.

That's right, we're back and with a furry, feline vengeance.

All right, so say what you want but it's MONDAY, people, what's more it is Columbus Day of all days, and I ask you what better way to celebrate than with a special feline edition of What. We. LOVE. here at the Angel Orensanz Foundation for the Arts?

Hmm? Nothing? Great! And so, without further ado and since I'm pretty sure my editors assumed I was kidding when I suggested a blog post about our Foundation mascot ...

Everybody, meet Tito!

Tito is the boss of us here at the Angel Orensanz Foundation and it's best not to question him. In an interview, a question was brought up regarding the source of his infinite authority at 172 Norfolk Street, but Tito declined to comment, choosing to indulge in the ever-present can of 'fancy feast' that awaits him every morning in the corner of Foundation Director Al Orensanz's office. 

As you can see from the above image, Tito has absolutely no qualms about putting his foot down and taking charge if occasion calls for it. Here, our fearless leader forced us to take a step back from the urgent projects that clearly were distracting us from the most important aspect of our jobs - paying attention to Tito when he wants it.

Which is not to be confused with when he does not want attention. 

That's when we all become quite certain of our places in the world, when, out of nowhere ...

Tito disappears ...

Sometimes for hours.

Maybe even days. We're alone. Abandoned. Hopeless. Without direction.

This image is here to illustrate the kind of melancholic funk into which we sink during one of Tito's sabbaticals.

  He's a "love 'em and leave 'em" kind of cat. Once he vanished for a week only to return with war-wounds across his face, giving him a very distinguished looking battlescar across his little kitty nose. 

But when he comes home, our arms are open. We lay out the 'fancy feast' every morning, just in case and patiently reattach computer keys that he has dislodged by using the keyboard as a scratching post. 

Because at the end of the day, we're family here at the Orensanz Foundation.

And we simply wouldn't be the same without Tito presiding over us.

Tito can be reached (when he feels like it) at 172 Norfolk Street, c/o The Angel Orensanz Foundation for the Arts. All submissions should be accompanied by something tasty like a can of tuna or bowl of milk.
