Some thoughts on acceleration and force

I presented this in the order of how I slowly understood the trick of delivering force - first an abstract concept of impact taught by Ah Fai, then a more complicated discovery on the acceleration pattern, last back to a more abstract concept of breakdowns.

Like I’ve previously stressed, 2D animation is everything but one single approach. There’s no one rule that rules them all, but interchangeable ideas with math, or physics, or music, etc. There’s no “perfect” animation either, but what is perceived as organic and dynamic. E.g., using the Fibonacci numbers to animate didn’t bring me a perfect animation! On the other hand, a tiny change in the pattern could already make the feeling of force so much more powerful.

Not so much of a tutorial than a personal experience. I hope you find this interesting hahaha

Breakdown / Accent / Arc

To thank for the support for our film so far, we are posting some notes on animating originally made for our animation assistants. Breakdown is a very crucial technique of animating. It is a guideline of how every action should be acted out. It involves a thinking process of “hmm, I want my character to move in this way particularly, because of the context/situation/emotion/thought… etc”

Last but not least, breakdowns are the playground for animators. If you find these notes useful, also check out our film We Have Plenty. This week was “gallops” in my lecture class. I drew this 10 frame cycle showing a horse and a dog (not to scale) to demonstrate the differences. The horse is doing a standard transverse gallop with a single suspended phase, and the dog is doing a full rotary gallop with two suspended phases. I structured the cycles so that the front ends are matching letting you see the difference in the timing of the back end.

From the earlier video rubber vs latex

Grey is the ball falling and green is it going back up, separated for clarity.

In physics terms we can see that the rubber absorbed a lot more of the impact than the latex! It bounces so quickly on the latex that there is no squash pose (the one in the rubber is exaggerated). The ball didn’t really stretch like that of course but I tried to match the length of the blur in those frames.

Shot with an iphone so I believe it’s 30fps

This is a video I took at the Science Center in Montreal. In animation we always thinks about the weight and texture of the *object* that's falling but I, for one, hadn't really considered the implications of different surfaces being impacted. In this video several balls of the exact same size and weight are being dropped from the same height onto different surfaces. In order they are : rubber, latex, polycarbonate, maple, steal and neoprene. I love physics and animation :)

Movement Studies from Mulan by Tom Bancroft

Below are sketches I did AT the recording studio while Eddie was reading his Mushu lines. He was polite, professional, but not very talkative. The strangest part was that he was “shy” (best word I can think of) about his performance so he insisted on being in the almost dark. We lit a few candles in the recording booth, and he had a little light for his script and he would read the lines. This made all of our video taping of his performance while he said the lines unusable. The one thing I left with is that he put his hands on his hips a lot when he spoke/acted. It was an action I was going to have Mushu do, but in the end, it just looked a bit too feminine.
