One of the greatest changes in the anime industry is the ability for the fans’ voices to be heard thanks to accessibility through the internet. Here, a fan petitions to have character designs of an upcoming anime, Digimon Adventure tri., changed before its release. Pictured above, the left image displays the character design teasers, while the right displays a fan’s ideal design. “Specifically, it’s the eyes that seem to be bothering old-school Digimon loyalists. Unlike the bright-eyed youths of the original, tri.’s leading men and ladies have smaller eyes, giving them sleepier, less expressive faces,” explains Casey Baseel from RocketNews24. Read more here!

Super Fan Gets A One-of-a-Kind Final Fantasy Cutlery Set!
YouTube series "Super Fan-Builds," produced by the same team behind "Man at Arms," recently surprised a Final Fantasy fan with a unique set of sword-inspired knives. The knives are reproductions of some of the franchise's most recognizable blades, including Cloud's Buster Sword, Auron's Katana, Squall's Gunblade, and Sephiroth's Masamune, all stored inside an Ultros knife block.

"In Japan, it is only the women who give presents (mainly chocolates) to men. Japanese women are usually too shy to express their love. (Though it might not be true nowadays.) Therefore, Valentine's Day was thought to be a great opportunity to let women express their feelings. However, this is a custom that smart chocolate companies spread to boost their sales, and it has been very successful. Now the chocolate companies in Japan sell more than half of their annual sales during the week before Valentine's Day. What is anime music? And why is King Records hosting its 1st Anime Song Festival big news? (Don't forget to check out the links throughout the article!)
Anime music is created primarily to be used in anime productions for theme songs (openings aka OP, and endings aka ED), background music, and songs created for specific characters. Due to the fact that this music type is determined by it's use, there is no specific genre or identifying patterns. Although there are clear patterns in some of the more pop-sounding openings, the spectrum of anime music has too much variety to be identifiable (should we compare the OP of Chobits "Let Me Be With You" to the OP of Free! "Rage On"? Or Say I Love You's OP "Friendship" to Attack on Titan's "Linked Horizon"?)
One of the features of anime music is that the song is performed by voice actors (the voices of the character in the show), so there might be some elements of performance like we're used to seeing from musicals. Also the purpose of anime music is to be connected to the anime show itself, so it is created with a character or story in mind. The music will work together with the animation to create a certain atmosphere (for example, Joe Hisaishi's work with Studio Ghibli films). There is also the fact that anime music, namely OPs, can be very exciting and get you pumped up for the episode!
For anime music to be celebrated in a music festival from a company that has otherwise not showcased work like this is an exciting incorporation of anime culture into the mainstream. While the consumer of anime music is typically "otaku," this festival serves two purposes: appealing to an anime fan base while introducing non-anime fans to music they may have otherwise never been exposed to. In a rare interview, Hayao Miyazaki talks about why his latest movie The Wind Rises is also his last.
For those of us who have been following Miyazaki's career, we know that this isn't the first time he's mentioned retiring. This article reveals the depth of detail and work that Miyazaki put into each of his films. His real hope is to get back to drawing a manga comic — just him, his pencil, and a single sheet of paper, “without thinking of the cost for production. That’s a perk for me as an old man right now.”
In Japan, anime crosses into promotional and mascot territory seamlessly. "At the front of many Japanese stores (in particular pharmacies, hairdressers and book stores) you will often see manga/anime type artwork like this one here. Its usually drawn with some sort of promotional message. In this case it's Asuka from Evangelion with a note saying that any new customer will get a free haircut if they dye their hair at the same time." explains Danny Choo.
