The slytherin/hufflepuff dynamic

Note: I’m referring to slytherin primary and hufflepuff primary as per @sortinghatchats​ system.  It’s been observed that hufflepuffs and slytherins get along excellently in real life. From the slytherin primary perspective, the reason is as follows: 1. YES someone else who understands that the important thing isn’t some abstract principle or felt ideal but people. 2. wait NO you can’t do that with EVERYONE people will take advantage of you omg you need to choose who to expend your resources on carefully 3. *hufflepuff refuses to listen because hufflepuff* 4. ok…  guess I need to protect this cinnamon roll since NO ONE ELSE will do it then the hufflepuff goes around smiling flowers at everyone while the slytherin hovers menacingly right behind them, glaring daggers at anyone who dares look at them the wrong way. whenever the hufflepuff turns around the slytherin switches to smiling flowers until they turn their backs again.

(a real life example i know of is a married couple where the husband was someone a lot of people turned to for help. Given the opportunity, he would have been spending 24/7 helping people (and not, say, sleeping or having any other time to himself) so the wife would answer the phone and filter people out for him/insist on fixed visiting hours and shoo out guests etc. When she passed away his kids started to have to unplug the phone to enable him rest time/time to himself) I have no idea what the hufflepuff perspective on this dynamic is but am happy to hear.

There’s an alternative to this dynamic! I’m a Hufflepuff, and my long-time partner is a Slytherin, and I know a lot of couples that are the same – including one where the husband house-shares with me (HuffleSlyth), and the wife house-shares with my partner Will (Slytherpuff). I notice…some parallels in the dynamic sometimes! We’re very different in other respects, but the thing we seem to have in common is our respective Slytherins can and will sit on us to make sure we don’t burn ourselves out trying to be everything to everyone.

In my case, I’m often running myself off my ass doing stuff for my community, and I’m not your stereotypical Hufflepuff – I hardly go around smiling flowers at everyone! I’m bossy and cantankerous and although I love my hobby community I apparently come off as quite intimidating and a little unfriendly at times. As a Slytherin secondary, this is actually a good thing – being grumpy and salty are things I usually cover up with a customer-service smile when I don’t feel safe or comfortable. I love my community, and I’ve done my best to make it a more accessible and queer friendly place that people feel safe in. But part of what makes me feel safe in that place is that I know I am loved regardless of whether I’m soft and polite and palatable or not. 

Most of the Hufflepuffs I know get salty and tired as well We’re not always sunshine and flowers, and caring so much can be really tiring. Sometimes we need someone to sit on us so we take some time to ourselves – another Huff will work, but Slytherins are very good at that sort of thing in my experience.

My partner is a really sweet, easygoing, puppy of a man. If you had to guess which one of us was the Slytherin you’d probably guess me, because I’m the obnoxious ambitious one! But ours is a good and vital partnership, in that he (and the other Slytherins in my life) often intervene to prevent me from burning out and make sure I take care of myself. Slytherins are good at taking care of their own, and my Slytherins (and people with strong Slytherin models) have hauled me out of burnout more times than I can say. 

So yeah. Sometimes it’s the Slytherin that’s the sunshine puppy cinnamon roll! TBH, most of the Slytherin primaries I know are marshmallows with very big hearts, regardless of how they seem! 

It’s worth considering that not every Hufflepuff presents the same way. I know other Huffleslyths who on the outside look very different to me, and that’s really awesome. But the idea that we’re all sunshine and flowers is wrong – especially as a slytherin secondary, being able to be honest about how tired and stressed I often am is a pressure release valve I desperately need in order not to have a breakdown. I think I would be a wreck by now if it weren’t for various fellow Loyalists who understand where I’m speaking from and who can mitigate my worst impulses.
