If he were anyone else, he might have pointed out that people’s dislike of Aris was much more recent than their dislike of Shred. But he wasn’t anyone else. So instead he said, “Only if you like hanging around me.”
Caleb loved college.
He loved having more freedom and not being under his father’s tyranny for the first time in his life. He was excited about the classes and his major. Sure, he was still skittish around the crowds, and he was still wasn’t good with people. But the good outweighed the bad.
Caleb was just about to duck inside his dorm when someone addressed him unexpectedly, and he momentarily tensed. He made an effort to relax as he turned to his apparent neighbor. He was good with faces, but it took him a moment to place it.
“Shred?” he asks, delighted and disbelieving. “I didn’t know you went to school here. H-how’ve you been?”
Zart was behind Shred, carrying a duffel bag full of clothes. In Shred’s hands were his toiletries bag and a box of electronics; his books were in the backpack he didn’t seem to notice weighing him down. The RA and RD had everything else. This was one trip.
An odd sensation filled him when Caleb responded. His lips tingled like they had when Caleb first pressed theirs together. His insides felt... fluttery. It was a feeling he’d never had before, and it made the ghost of a smile cross his lips.
“My roommate kicked me out,” he said. “I’m living here now.” He nodded to the door. “Are you here too?”

@magicveincd His roommate had kicked him out. Okay, so it wasn't quite as bad as it sounded. But there were facts, and the fact was that Zart had asked the RD for a new roommate, and the RD had offered Shred a medical single if he'd move out, and just as it had always been Shred cared less. So he'd agreed. Now, with the RA and RD and Zart helping, he was moving his things up three floors to the single he'd been given. He was aware, as always, of what was around him, but it took a minute for him to figure out where he knew the boy across the hall from. "Caleb?"

“I’m moving.” Caleb hugged his knees to his chest, frowning at the playground before glancing at his friend sadly. He’d been fighting against the move as much as he dared, but there was no changing his dad’s mind. He was moving, and the thought made him miserable. “I don’t want to move, but my dad says we have to. I don’t know why we have to go. I like it here.”
He looked at the ground while Caleb spoke. He didn't cry. He didn't feel like crying. He felt hollow, emptied out. It used to be his normal, before Caleb, and he'd been starting to seem normal, but now... "When?"

He looks down at his hands, surprised. “I did wash them. They just don’t come all the way clean anymore.”

“Not exactly. Mostly people don’t like hanging around me.”

For a second it looks like he won’t. Then he says, quiet but audible, “It’s good to see you back on your feet.”
Shred seemed so calm, so relaxed about the whole thing. Like he didn’t just get confirmation that his whole life was a lie. Aris envied him, the way he could take things so logically, remain unaffected by everything. Maybe he could be happier, if he was just a little bit more like Shred. Or perhaps it wasn’t any of that all, could it be that his clone, his friend was breaking inside? Aris doubted it.
He wanted to speak to him, wanted to be able to say something, anything. Janson quickly closed up and left before Aris could notice, he was too busy focusing all his attention towards Shred. He opened his mouth to say something but nothing came out.
It wasn’t exactly unexpected. Aris was so normal compared to Shred. He had feelings, displayed them in a normal, accepted manner. Aris understood what was and wasn’t supposed to be said. Shred... didn’t do any of those things.
He almost thought it didn’t matter, but there was a sort of weight on his shoulders. So many things made sense now, and he hadn’t realized until now that he really wanted them not to make sense. Not that it mattered. He always knew he was a freak.
Jay stood off to the side as two boy Launders she vaguely recognized to be builders heaved the newcomer out of the box, fingers twiddling with the bottom of her shirt awkwardly. When finally she caught a glimpse of dark hair, and tan skin she moved forward; apologizing as she accidentally bumped someone’s shoulder, heaving a sigh when the crowd lurched forward and she herself being pushed along with them.
“ Hi, name’s Jay. ” She introduced herself simply, before proceeding to grab his hand to check his pulse, normal, thankfully. Proceeding to pressing a light thumb to his right eyebrow, she lifted it upwards to examine his eyes, having to stand on her toes to reach, “ Your eyes are dilated, is your stomach cramping? ”
If he was surprised to have a girl suddenly grab- bing his hands and face, he didn’t show it. His expression didn’t change at all; the only shift was that he looked at her instead of looking around.
He didn’t respond to the introduction. If he rea- lized it was an invitation to give his own name, he didn’t show it. “No,” he said in answer to the question. “It’s dark down there,” he added, ap- parently to explain it.
“Yeah well, guess that was a formal introduction. Not that’m all that formal m'self.” The girl shrugged as thin beams of sunlight pushed through and bounced off her face causing her to squint. “Don’t it ever rain in this goddamn place? Jesus I’m sick an’ tired of the sun” It was almost humorous how quickly she could change the subject, and for no particular reason at all. Aphrodite just always had so much to say, so much to do– even if it often involved getting thrown in the slammer.
“No one here really is. Except some of the Keepers when they’re in the Gathering.” He shakes his head in response to the question. “Same weather every day,” he says. “No rain, no snow, no cold, no wind even."
"People ‘round here actually get to pick where they end up? Or is it ’you go where we place ya’ type o’ deal?”
She was already back at work on the slab or meat, slowly making each cut that she did. Every now and again, she had to put more force on the knife than she would’ve wanted, but with her being so small she didn’t have a lot of muscle to just cut the meat with ease.
He was ready to step in if her grip slipped again or if she had trouble, but the better grip was working and she was doing well.
“It’s a combination of both,” he answered. “Yes, the Keepers make the final decision, but they don’t choose without regard to what you want. They take into consi- deration who’s understaffed, where your friends are, and what your skills and affinities are. They try to make sure everyone’s happy with where they end up.”
Minho glanced over his shoulder and frowned. He looked to either sides, reconfirming that there was nobody else but them around. He wasn’t sure if Shred was following him or he just had to walk with him. He decided he wouldn’t question. He grabbed a sandwich and took a big bite as soon as he was at the kitchen.
He didn’t have anywhere else to go. Work was done in the Blood House for the day. All he needed to do still was eat dinner, so he might as well tag along with Minho.
“—and w’at face is that?”
“The ‘things are klunk but I don’t want to admit it’ face.”
He squinted his eyes and tilted his head, his expression showed that though he didn’t understand completely what the other’d just said, he wasn’t really wrong. In Nico’s eyes Shred was funny guy, it wasn’t a bad thing though.
“Yeah, I guess.”
Shred was more than a little odd. He was used to people disliking him for it, or find- ing him creepy. But Nico didn’t seem to think that about him, which was good. “Thank you,” he said, almost as an after- thought.
