“Well then your former teacher was sucks. If teachers aren’t making any of their student think with their own messed up heads, they’re awfully bad.” He said. He remembered having plenty of bad teachers when he was in school, luckily for his curious nature, he thought for himself. “Most famous things are overrated. I’m not saying I hated it, but it felt unreasonable. Really? You would take an advice of a random guy in the street?” He raised a brow with a smile. “Well honestly I don’t read many plays. And hey, I’m not against all classics. I just like less those who doesn’t have much impact now.”

“he wasn’t the best, but he did his job just fine and he was a good person, even if he didn’t let us have our own opinions a lot of the time.” which was a bit contradictory to everything she said, as an english teacher especially should listen to their students opinions on the topics. “that can be true, some things are famous for no reason and don’t deserve the title of being famous. for example, the kardashians. most novels read in school are famous for a reason though, but i can agree some were horribly boring.” or just read too much, she read to kill a mockingbird so many times in classes, enough to the point where she couldn’t stand it anymore. “why not? everyone has been part of the educational system, and if not it was for a reason, so i’m trying to make it better for my students and make school more entertaining.”

“i think at it’s core the play tends to be a little fucked.” seth shrugged. “it’s really at it’s core, showing the worst parts of ourselves — what could happen, what can happen, when old feuds and toxic beliefs take over rational thought.” his lips pursed. “tybalt, their parents need to continue playing the feud, every tragic aspect of the play, to me, it all links back to the worst traits us humans tend to possess. and even on occasion — allow to take over.” he paused for a moment, mind whirring. “i think their famalies did know better, but at that point the fued was tradition. right of passage. what did they have without the fued? it was apart of their identity in a way and giving it up — maybe they were afraid they were nothing without it, even when it lead to the death of their children.”

“well yes, if it wasn’t it wouldn’t have been very entertaining would it?” she was not the person who derived pleasure from things that could be considered fucked up, but shows and movies and books thrived off of it to sell and bring people in. “that’s why it’s good to read, you must know the full story before you make assumptions or get too trigger happy like tybalt.” trigger wasn’t the best word for the time period of romeo and juliet though. “they didn’t know better, they didn’t even know romeo and juliet knew each other, so they couldn’t make a better decision on how to handle the situation and only got bits and pieces of the truth. well we can only hope the fictional families of the capulets and the montagues learned their lesson and stopped the pointless feud.”

“she died a year after i graduated. heroine overdose, from what i’ve been told. plus it happened way too long ago, reporting her now, even if she was alive, would not make any difference.” the teacher in question wasn’t really a she, but mikhail would die before he corrected the woman on it. “ok but loving someone just because you cannot have them is not love. we all know romeo would’ve gotten over his romance once he banged her and would probably move on to marry some girl his parents approved of.”

“my goodness, what type of teacher was that? sleeping with students and...doing heronie! that’s such a horrible thing, she must have been a tortured soul, but also a rapist by the law. she sounded like no good.” she shook her head at the thought of such things. “that’s not what i meant, but it in itself is romantic which is why she probably couldn’t help but fall for him. no! he did...’bang’ her and he still wanted her and would have died for her, he did die for her, and he wouldn’t have moved on so quickly from her.

“neither.” teresa stated outrightly. sure, she had studied it when she went to high school but she would remember such a discussion in class. she almost wrote an essay on it as well. “i think it was infatuation. first love nostalgia. i wanted to marry this dude name guillermo when i was like 13. huge crush on him, same to me. we thought it would last forever but it didn’t as soon as this new girl came in named Caroline. same idea applies to romeo and juliet. they were young, rebellious against a very strict household. i’m pretty sure juliet wasn’t even that gorgeous to have men lusting over her already. wasn’t she like 12?”

she leaned in to listen to her good friends opinion on the topic, knowing she could always go to her for these things. “she was twelve yet had romeo and paris lusting after her, and not many could considering she was in her house all the time. romeo couldn’t have felt that since that was how he felt for rosaline, so for him he had already gone through that phase. i can’t speak for juliet though, but i do think that had they had more time they would have lasted, neither would have run off for another.”

THEY shrugged sheepishly to her words. vivi enjoyed reading all types of things, but romeo and juliet had been their least favorite work. in their opinion, the plot was flawed and had too many loopholes not the mention the obvious glaring fact that juliet hadn’t even been of legal age even by those standards back in the day. as far as vivi was concerned, romeo ahd taken advantage of her. “really? you think her nurse wouldn’t have sung like a canary if her position had been threatened? or even worse - word got out that juliet was no longer a virgin on her wedding night to the actual person she was to be wed to?” vivi paused slightly, shaking their head once more. “paris already made it clear that he would kill romeo given the chance - both for tybalt and because he believed that his cousin had died over a broken heart because of him. would he really have been banished with that already being held against him? i really don’t think so.” greatest love story their ass.

“of course not, nurse raised juliet herself, even breast fed her, she would have kept her secret to the grave.” that’s what anisha wanted to be true, but she couldn’t quite be sure of such a thing as there wasn’t enough on nurses character to draw an analysis. “that is true, but i sill can’t help but believe that it is a love story and that it wasn’t their fault.” she couldn’t think of anything more to say, desperate to keep it a love story in her warped mind, always looking for the positive and the lovely.

the blonde internally groaned at the mention of romeo and juliet, she loved shakespeare but that one play always gave her h e a r t b r e a k i n g memories. “ obviously lust, i mean does it even need to be explained.”

anisha seemed a bit shocked at how quickly the girl reacted and responded to the question, and she couldn’t help but disagree with the woman. “of course, because many people, including me, don’t agree and don’t think it’s lust.”

“toxicity in relationships isn’t always apparent in the way one might think.” xavier replied carefully. “do you really think romeo turning to suicide when faced with the — ultimately untrue — knowledge that juliet was dead, was healthy? i don’t think that reaction was the cause of the people around them, but the actual beliefs of romeo himself.” he paused again, shrugging slightly. “or even how romeo sought juliet out after their first meeting. that was again, attributed to romeo and his need to possess juliet, rather than their families turning their relationship into something else.”

anisha nodded as she continued to listen to his reasoning for his opinion and beliefs on the famous, or infamous, play. “suicide in itself is never healthy, but he was young and naive and thought that to be the best option for himself. he had nothing left in his life besides juliet, his best friend was dead and he was banished from the only place he called home, he dreamed of death without those things in his life and the only thing keeping him alive was juliet. without her he felt like he had nothing, which of course is unhealthy but if they had the opportunity to be together without the conflict of their family none of the unhealthy aspects would have happened.” she explained her perspective. “i wouldn’t say he was trying to possess her, rather get to know her.”

“really? because i think that fact speaks plainly about my opinion.” seth merely shrugged. “i’ve been in relationships where i’ve done stupid shit just cause i was looking to get laid, and i’ve been in relationships where i genuinely loved someone. i don’t think the play is about whether or not romeo and juliet were in lust or love — i think it’s about the circumstances and the environment that lead to such volatility. they were kids, and whether it was love or lust — it deserved to be explored, not destroyed because of a family feud. no?”

“we can agree to disagree then.” she was never one for confrontation or arguing, far too afraid of such things and matters and rather would live in ignorance to keep away conflict. “but that i can agree on. their families didn’t know any better but they shouldn’t have promoted this violence and war for their children between others. look at tybalt, he was raised to believe this and loathed anyone that shared the last name of the family enemy or even associated with them, to the point where he wanted to murder romeo because he crashed a party.”

Flynn shrugged his shoulders. “Well your students must be pretty dumb to think it was just lust.” He said bluntly. “But it’s just a play. Besides, it’s not even updated. I doubt anyone would do something like that even for love these days. People are way too damn self concerned. Why don’t the school teaches more modern stuff?”

“they’re not dumb, but a majority of the population considers it to be just lust. i remember when i first read romeo and juliet as a student my teacher insisted it was just lust, didn’t even let us say our own opinions on the topic.” she explained, not wishing for anyone to be thought of as dumb. “it’s not just any play, it’s arguably the most famous one in all of history. well if you can think of any modern day stories worthy of being in an english class let me know, i might ask to add it to the curriculum. i still wouldn’t get rid of the classics, they’re important to understanding our language and inspirations for other stories.”

“THAT’S where the stupidity part also plays a role, as well as the male ego. the forbidden is something that entices all of us. they may have had sex, yes, but afterwards did he even have a chance to see someone else and start lusting after them? nope. there are more factors as to why he decided to die with her - for one, for all intents and purposes, he’d ended her engagement to someone else without the consent of anyone of legal age. two, he would’ve had to face not just his parents’ wrath, but her parents, and also paris, juliet’s cousin. if he didn’t off himself, he would’ve died anyway.”

“well you have a very real, in depth, and new analysis of it which i can admit to liking very much. it’s better than hearing the same argument every time i ask my students the question. perhaps he would have seen a more beautiful girl and pulled the same thing, that argument is valid, but i have to disagree with the rest. they wouldn’t have figured out about the marriage, only two people knew and they wouldn’t have said anything, and he was already banished from verona so they legally couldn’t go out and kill him. if they did they would die too for murdering him, which none of the characters would have done.”

anisha was horrible at reading people, but she never even tried. she didn’t want to know people, she didn’t want people to read her and know her thoughts and feelings and all the secrets she kept inside her heart. so she didn’t read the girl as she took a pause from their conversation, and she hoped the girl didn’t try to read her. “i’ll admit it, i don’t see the shame in being a hopeless romantic like many do.” at least in this town, it seemed like no one believed in love “they couldn’t recognize it as love, no one even knew about it except the two and nurse, all they knew was tybalt was dead and romeo did it. they couldn’t know about the two, which i suppose is why honesty is so important.”

Flynn read the play once. It was a long time ago, yes, but he remembered it pretty well. And once the woman asked he couldn’t avoid to the question. “I don’t seriously think anyone would be stupid enough to kill themselves for someone if there was just lust.” He replied. “But you know, that’s just me… though even for love I’d call it a harsh decision.”

the boy looked young enough to be one of her students but she assumed he wasn’t, she knew almost every high schooler in the town, that was her job. “finally, someone who sees it the same way i do. they wouldn’t kill themselves if it was just lust, especially since they had sex before the infamous suicide.” she rambled in her teacher voice, talking as she did with her class on the topic.

“why not both?” xavier offered, head quirking to the side. “i mean — six people died right and it was a fairly expedited relationship, so. something was clearly pushing those kids. but at the same time — it was a whirlwind, passionate and without many words to capture it. if you ask me — it’s both and it was a toxic, but heady combination.”

this was an interesting opinion, and she leaned forward to show her interest. “i completely agree with you on that, but i’m not sure if i say it would be toxic. they weren’t toxic for each other like many couples in literature, anna and vronsky for example, it was the people around them that made their relationship turn to something violent and toxic.”

seth merely blinked at the other woman, before shrugging. “romeo and juliet was a three day relationship between a thirteen year old and a seventeen year old that killed six people.” he pursed his lips. “if anything, i’d say it was stupidity and hormones combining in one deadly mix.”

“well that is an undeniable fact about the play, not quite an opinion.” it was true, it was a volatile play, but she still found it to be one of her favorites. “that is also a fact, not an opinion. do you think they were stupid because they were in love or they were just hormonal because it was lust?”

well if you mean literally, the last time i went to the doctor they said i was very healthy so i don’t think i have any heart problems. if you mean in the metaphorical sense, then that’s hard to say.

one of my students hugged me last week for giving them some extra credit to help bring their grade up and they were of the opposite sex!
