Summary

The Principles I based my design on were, lock, shit and rotation all of which are key element to the hip joint. Though it was important to keep my design as far away as possible to looking like the hip joint. Sound was a key aspect of my design and is expressed in my sketch models, though I felt only focusing on the principle of sound didn't convey my ideas I was attempting to expressed. 

Through Project Three I have learnt much through material testing, and I now believe I have a fair understanding of the characteristics of Latex and Basswood.

DSDN 101- Inspiration

This scene is from one of my all time favourite movies, House of 1000 Corpses.  I found great inspiration from this particular scene from the stage set up and environment it creates, as well as the main light sources being the ones seen on set. Brilliant.

Stop Motion Update

Through critiques and discussions, many faults in the communication of my 40second progress stop motion became clear implications. Such lack of communication included my use of a doll representing a puppet master, this was emphasised with the absence of movement in the doll which further confused the viewers what relevance the doll had.

The use of Nylon only further disrupted the design intentions, as the idea was based around the puppet master (doll) in control of the hand (representing sweatshop workers) though this was not conveyed well due to the use of Nylon, to improve this it was suggested to use dark obvious strings. The use of dark string was also intended to emphasis my slogan current at the time "cut the ignorance".

Due to my background being white, the communication between the background and objects in the foreground was weak, creating a sweatshop atmosphere would greatly improve the interesting nature of the design as well as enhance puppet show vibes.

Student Critique- Vijay Ranchhod

Unity is a central aspect Vijay wants to convey to his audience, this is successfully achieved in Vijay's storyboard through two people from different backgrounds being united. These individuals are brought together with the means of the more fortunate assisting the less fortunate; this is a basic but very effective way of reaching out to the wider audience as it is well communicated. This unity exampled in Vijay’s storyboard should also encourage the unity and empowerment of his audience.

Vijay’s use of a handshake, is a universal symbol of unity; this is a beneficial symbol to use as through other Caritas promotions it could be a reoccurring symbol as it can easily be manipulated and redesigned. In Vijay’s case the use of a handshake portrays a very strong and moving message that is likely to capture his audience.

Though Vijay’s message is a clear and an easy message to understand, which should benefit the attraction he gathers from his target audience I feel in order for Vijay's work to stand out and be remembered Vijay should not lose his own flare and style in the stop motion; as said in the Tao Te Ching “your limitations can be your strengths”; if Vijay works his limitations of this project well he could create something remarkable. Brilliant idea.

Does authentic modernist furniture exist?

It is common of artists and designers to applause the qualities of those who are either retired or dead (Dormer, 1990, p. 23) in effect creating a halt in innovative design. One could argue Marcel Breuer’s Wassily Chair “symbolizes all that modern furniture was meant to represent” (ruksliving.com 2013) as the form follows function. Thus furniture that follows the key modernist design elements should be considered as modern as the Wassily Chair. The Oxford dictionary definition of authentic is “of undisputed origin and not a copy; genuine”. Consequently, furniture claiming to be Modernist can only be associated with being a genuine piece if done in the traditional way; Including functionality, use of materials and the methods of manufacture. If such characteristics are embodied in a furniture design I believe it is fair to call it an authentic piece of modernist furniture, although if the design is contaminated with opposing design characteristics it is therefore a non-authentic design.

This is Marc Quinn’s most famous piece of work, Self, made using 4.5 litres of his own blood, which was slowly extracted from his body over a period of five months and frozen in a cast of his face. Quinn has been making these roughly every five years since 1991, and each one must be maintained carefully in fridges. The fragility of the media means exhibiting is difficult - the head has to be placed into a glass case which is chilled from underneath. It reminds the audience of the fragility of existence and the precise conditions necessary for the flourishing of life.
