8x16: Remember the Titans
Life in the bunker~ âŠOh Cas, donât start on that habbit~
âHe hasnât spoken to me in three days,â is the first thing Cas says over their morning coffee.
Sam doesnât know what to say to that. He has no clue why Dean is acting like this, honestly. This isnât how he ever expected things to go.
âI think I should leave,â Cas continues. He stares down at his hands, fingers fidgeting with the handle of his mug. âI donât think heâs comfortable with me here anymore.â
âCas, heyâŠâ Sam tries, but Cas shakes his head.
âI think it would be best for me, too. To think he returned my affections, to finally be with him after all these yearsâŠto have those few days with him and have it snatched awayâŠI canât explain how much it hurts. And it hurts more every time I see him, and he canât even look at me now, and I -â
Sam squeezes Casâ shoulder gently. âItâs okay, I get it,â he says. âYou donât have to explain yourself to me. But I think you should at least talk to Dean before you go.â
The look Cas gives him in return is so pained and hopeless Sam wants to break something. He wants to go shake his brother until he fixes this mess, really.
âAt least tell him goodbye,â Sam says quietly, and this time Cas nods. He pushes away from the table, coffee almost untouched and growing cold, and Sam realizes he means heâs leaving now, today, and his chest suddenly aches. Dean and Cas have always been closer, sure, but Sam still considers Cas his best friend, and things just donât feel right anymore when heâs not around.
But if this is what Cas really needs, he canât stop him.Â
Samâs washing the breakfast dishes, deep in thought, when he hears Dean yell. He winces and dries his hands quickly, jogging through the bunker, heading towards Deanâs voice. He stops just outside Casâ door.
He hesitates, flattens himself against the wall to listen, ready to intervene if heâs needed.
âYou canât just leave,â he hears Dean say brokenly.
âItâs for the best,â Cas replies almost coldly.
âYou always think itâs for the best,â Dean snaps. âAnd thatâs always turned out great.â
âI canât - I canât stay here and do this. I canât watch you avoid me anymore. I canât help that the siren took your shape, I canât stop being in love with you, and I - I donât want to. Iâm only sorry it makes you uncomfortable.â
Thereâs a long, tense silence, and Sam prepares to have to step in.
âLet me have my suitcase now, please.â
âYou think thatâs why Iâm upset?â Dean says softly.
âOf course it is,â Cas huffs. âYou canât even look me in the eye now. What else could it even -â
âHe stole everything,â Dean yells suddenly. âOur - our first kiss, he got that, not me. The first night you slept next to me, he got that.â Dean sighs shakily. âHe got to hear youâŠhear you say you loved me for the first time.â
âBut it wasnât really you,â Cas says, sounding bewildered.
âBut you thought it was,â Dean says, voice muffled like heâs got his hand over his face. âI know itâs stupid butâŠfor you, it was our first kiss, and I wasnât there.â
âOh, Dean,â Sam hears Cas say, and thereâs the sudden sound of movement, and when Sam peers around the doorframe for a brief moment he sees Cas has pulled Dean into his arms.
Theyâre quiet for a long time, and Samâs about to leave when Cas speaks again.
âIf it helps,â he says, âit was terrible.â
Dean snorts in surprised laughter. âYeah?â
âI had no idea what I was doing,â Cas sighs. âIt was overwhelming, and he wouldnât slow down. Iâd always imagined youâd be moreâŠpatient with me.â
âYou imagine that kind of thing a lot, huh?â Dean says, and Sam can practically hear the smirk in his voice.
âYes,â Cas says flatly. âAnyway, after that itâs mostly a blur. Itâs like a dream I can barely remember. And Dean, there are so many other firsts left. Theyâre yours, ifâŠif you want them.â
âYeah,â Dean says quietly. âLike taking you on our first real date? Or maybeâŠâ
Sam canât hear the next part, but he hears Cas gasp.
âY-yes,â Cas says. âThe siren did notâŠdo that with me.â
Dean chuckles. âGood. Now, uhâŠhow about a real first kiss?â
Sam doesnât hear Cas respond. When he peeks his head around the corner again theyâre wrapped around each other, kissing soft and slow. Cas makes a little moan of pleasure, and Sam decides thatâs his cue to get the hell out of here.
He goes back to washing dishes with a smile on his face.
