I feel like Matilda the musical, by the way it is constructed proves its exact point. kids can do it. they can do sooooo much more than adults give them credit for and they can do it on their own. give the little girls playing Matilda Wormwood solo songs with a complete choreography, tons of big words to remember, trust them to be physically and mentally strong for all the gymnastics and also self restraint that the part requires, and they can do it. give the little kids ensemble songs with no adults in them, complete choreographies relying on each other and their own musical and artistic talent, and they can do it. the musical wants to convince us that children can be that strong, that brave, that expressive and yes they can. it proves itself right. every single one of these kid performers is evidence of it.
