Do any of you like the Kurokura Fandom?

(I know, I'm talking about this a lot, but I can't get it out of my mind!)

I wanted to talk about the fandom of Kuropkura shippers and why I don't like some of them. While I don't have a problem with people shipping what they want, I do find the way they go about it to be strange. I love angsty/toxic ships just as much as the next person, however, I do find the way the fandom often ignores Kurpika's trauma with the phantom troupe to be alarming. I would much rather see people acknowledge it and keep the ship's problematic dynamic to work through instead of pushing it under the rug and ignoring the problematic parts. I don't like Kurokura as a ship, but I would enjoy a good fanfic of them that acknowledges the problematic parts and works through them slowly. I don't see the two being a fluffy dynamic, however, I know not everyone likes to write angst. I don't want everyone to either, but I would like to see a simple acknowledgment of the dynamic they have in canon. Along with a hint of how they might've worked through it, even if it isn't shown. Another thing that arcs me about the fandom is the way the two are often portrayed together. I enjoy a good enemies and rivals dynamic, but with the ship, Kurpika is shown to be hyper-feminine with Chrollo. While I do enjoy seeing Kurpika in a more feminine role, I find it uncomfortable how this only really happens when he is shipped with Chrollo. Kurpika isn't a fem-boy in canon, but is shown not to shy away from feminine things. However, I feel the way they show this with Kurokura to board on the fetishization of two conventionally attractive men together, rather than an actual headcanon or preference for a feminine Kurpika. Combining all of this together makes me not enjoy interacting with the ship or its fandom, rather than avoiding the ship due to its problematic parts. I do see the potential of the ship in a fanfic as a writer who enjoys complex and taboo topics, but not with them being the end goal of the fanfic. Instead, growing as people, learning humanity, and not seeking vengeance. I know this is unrealistic for their canon characters. However, it would be a great plot for some fan fiction. While I don't like the ship, I wish that Kurokura shippers didn't try hiding the problematic parts and instead embrace them. Let it be a toxic, unhealthy ship instead of trying to romanticize it. Embrace the toxic dynamic, as the HisoKuro shipper does, instead of justifying the ship. So what if it has problematic parts? Many ships are, and that's okay, just embrace it rather than deny it. Now this doesn't excuse shipping Kurpika with Chrollo when he was a minor, though! Keep that pedophilic stuff out, ship his canon adult character with Chrollo, not the minor version! There are subtle but still differences in the manga between his adult and minor designs. This isn't directed at Kurokura shippers as a whole, but rather a small group of them.

Why do people ship KuroKura?

I want to understand why people ship these two, so I've thought about it for a while. I've seen people ship KuroKura for a few different reasons. They ship them because of the "Enemies to Lovers Trope", age gap relationship, for the angst, because they're two conventionally attractive men, and/or because they "ship" them as platonic rivals/mortal enemies. While not all ships are romantic, shipping culture puts an emphasis on romantic relationships. Some simply enjoy KuroKura as enemies, which is why they're often paired together. Remember, shipping means to pair two characters together, not always in a romantic context, but it usually is or has romantic undertones. I find KuroKura to be disturbing, but I know many enjoy more toxic dynamics or like the idea of seeing how enemies navigate a romantic relationship with one another. As for the age gap, people assume Kurpikra is 17, refusing to acknowledge how characters age in the manga, as it's still ongoing. Kurpika's birthday is April 4th, 1982. He was 17 during the hunter exams, but two-ish years have passed since then, making him 19 in the manga. Shipping Kurpika when he was 17 with Chrollo is a pedophilic ship, making it a pro-ship. If you're shipping him with Chrollo when he is an adult, then it isn't pedophilic. I do find their large age gap to be weird, but I don't think age gaps between two adults should be seen as a big problem in fanfiction. Most people that I've interacted with or have seen ship KuroKura do not want them to ever be canon, but do enjoy the hypotheticals of seeing how the two would work together. While I don't ship them, I don't mind if others do as long as they aren't being weird about it. I do want to talk about my problems with KuroKura fandom and why I don't like them in future posts. As of right now, I won't dive into it much, but I will talk about Chrollo having killed Kurapika's clan. This is the main reason I don't ship them, and something I see people complain about when it comes to the ship. While I understand people enjoy problematic and complex dynamics, this one isn't one I can ever see happening in canon, and most Kurokura shippers agree on this. While Chrollo, I don't think, is shown to hold any animosity towards Kurpika, seeing him as a threat to the troupe at most, Kurpika, on the other hand, holds a deep-rooted hatred towards the Phantom troupe, aka Chrollo. This has great potential for an angsty fanfic and depiction of a complex ship dynamic. However, this should never be something that is generally romanticized. Which is why I understand the hate for the ship, and why I don't like it. However, for me personally, this isn't enough for me to really want to see the shippers be persecuted for those who like it. At most, I just block them and move on if they're causing problems. With this being said, I would like to see more Kurokura ships have them work through their hatred and in the end go their separate ways. Allowing Kurpika to truly feel the grief of his clan and Chrollo to gain a sense of humanity. This is unrealistic for their canon character, but for a fanfic, I would adore this. This is the only time I'll ever be caught enjoying the ship, as I love "doomed relationships" that end with the two not being together.

This is a good post!! I appreciate you contemplating why the shippers like it rather than assuming none of them understood the manga like most KuroKura haters do. Personally I used to hate it (more of a Leopika fan if I’m being honest), but the fanfics sold me on it because I like ships with extreme toxicity. Then I looked more into their parallels and it grew on me more. Definitely don’t think it should be canon but I understand why so many people are ride or die for this ship

Also one small correction- Chrollo does hold some animosity towards Kurapika because he killed Uvogin. The spiders are all extremely close with one another so that’s not something Chrollo would overlook (tho he initially only saw him as a threat). This gives them a mutual hatred that a lot of fans really enjoy

I remember contemplating changing the section because of Uvogin's death. However, I kept it because I feel his hatred wasn't shown as much compared to Kurpika's (slightly disappointed by it). I do 100% agree with you, though! Of course, I try to understand ships before just blindly hating or liking them. While I personally don't like shipping Chrollo with anyone, I have zero problems with people shipping him with others. Which is why I don't mind Kurokura, especially since HisoKuro and Silvakuro shippers don't get as much hate, even though those two are also very unrealistic and problematic to a degree. This is just my personal take, though. I haven't finished the manga, I could be interpreting it wrong or missing context. Also, thank you for your thoughts!

Do you like enemies-to-lovers?

I adore seeing a good enemies-to-lovers done right. Especially if at the end they go their separate ways, knowing the other will be better off without them, or if they know they can't be together because of their past. It's just enough angst and tragic love for me to get excited over because it shows the characters, despite their history, began to care for one another deeply enough to not want to hold each other back. This is even more enthralling when, prior to this, they hated one another or didn't care about each other enough to think about the long-term effects of their actions. This not only bites them in the butt later, but also shows how much they grow in their relatonship and as individuals through-out the story. I feel a good enemies-to-lovers story is one where they develop as characters and realize their actions have long-term consequences, even after being forgiven, the effects and guilt are still there.

NOTE: This may not be how enemies-to-lovers work, more aligning with forbidden love, but I still felt forbidden love didn't quite align with what I imagined.

What is pro-shipping, why is it wrong, and what counts as a pro-ship?

To better understand what pro-shipping is, let's learn what it used to mean. Proshipping used to mean you were pro that ship, think something like "I'm pro Geto × Gojo." Now, proshipping means problematic ships, for example, anything that's illegal, like Gojo × Yuji! Pro-shipping is just ships that are problematic in nature– "But if that's the case, then why isn't Geto × Gojo seen as a pro-ship, since Gojo killed Geto?" That's because even though a ship may have problematic elements, it may not be seen as a pro-ship within or outside that fandom. Most ships that are two adults or even two teenagers won't be considered by the fandom as a pro-ship, even if they're Victim × Murder or unhealthy. As long as they are of age or close in age, most won't actually care about their lore with each other. Those who do will either ignore it or justify it to others. Then what counts as a pro-ship? Well, I can only answer this for myself, but for me personally, I consider anything pedophilic, incest, romanticizes/downplays abuse, and shows sexual/gore of characters underage as pro-ships. While I may not view all toxic or unhealthy ships as pro-ships, depending on the lore surrounding the characters. Coughs, SatoSugu– coughs, I won't ship them if it unsettles me or makes me uncomfortable. However, I won't stop others from doing so, but I won't interact with those who do ship things that I view as pro-ships. I find that pro-ships can be sometimes subjective, as not everyone may agree that, for example, Victim × Murder ships are pro-ships or that all abusive relationships are pro-ships. It just comes down to personal view, lore of the characters, and what is/isn't acceptable in that fandom space. That's why SatoSugu isn't viewed as a pro-ship despite Gojo Killing Geto, they have a deeper lore and background with each other. This isn't even the only example of fandoms picking and choosing what they consider problematic in the fandom.

Is consuming dark media harmful & does it desensitize people from harmful content?

What is dark media? Dark media is often content that contains graphic or explicit material that can be unsettling for some, as it shows different forms of abuse, unconstitutional acts, crimes, and things that are triggering. Dark media often shows us the unsavory truths of things that have or are happening in the real world. While not all dark media is based on reality or are true stories, they can still often contain things that we view morally as wrong or downright disgusting. While dark media has been around for a long time, think something like true crime, dark fiction, reenactments of terrible events, stories based on fiction, and so on. I find fanfiction depicting abuse or toxic dynamics is often scrutinized to the extreme. In a worst-case scenario ending in harassment and death threats, and a best-case scenario being judged. So why does this happen, and are those people's concerns reasonable or even justified? I think first we have to break down the reason why dark media is often enjoyed and who the demographic is. People who often enjoy dark media are younger people or people who've gone through abuse, and they read/watch/write about it. It's a form of coping with their trauma by either desensitizing themselves to it or seeing how horrible it truly was by comparing the two. So why is it so wrong to consume this content then? My personal take is that it isn't wrong at all. However, it can be harmful if you're exposed to it for prolonged periods. Overconsumption of anything IS harmful, no matter what it is. This includes dark media, which is why it's important to take breaks from this material and social media as a whole. There are many negative effects of dark content if overconsumed, and there are also positives to it if consumed in moderation! For example, the main point I see for fiction that has dark themes is that it desensitizes people to the harmful content. While I do believe this to be true, I believe that this only happens if overconsumed or if it's protrade in a "positive" light. This is done in cases where abuse is depicted, and they downplay the harm the victim went through. Using words that make the abuse seem normal and even like the victim wanted it, which can cause the audience's views on abuse to be slowly warped. If this is the type of dark content they're consuming regularly, it normalizes abuse, which is harmful to actual abuse victims. However, when dark content that depicts abuse actually shows the reality of abuse and the audience is consuming it in moderation, it can help spread the word and even teach people about the warning signs of abusive relationships. Helping people who may be going through abuse realize what is happening to them and even help them become unsensitized to it by showing them how certain actions are wrong. While dark content has many things wrong with it, it can be helpful to some to realize the situations they're in. My personal take is that as long as you're not consuming large amounts of that content and aren't romanticizing the harm in it, then all is good.

Am I the only one annoyed about people claiming you can't multi-ship?

Like yes Susan, I ship Gojo × Geto AND Geto × Shoko. Don't get your panties in a twist. It's quite possible to ship one or multiple characters together with multiple people. It's called MULTI-SHIPPING for a reason. Now shut up and go to your 9/5 before going home depressed. Don't forget to take that glass shot at midnight when your kids are asleep and your spouse is probably out having an affair. ✌️

Am I the only one who finds it annoying when people say "X character wouldn't do this!" Or "Y character isn't like that!" Especially in fanfiction?

Obviously you can have your own views on a character but that doesn't make it correct or mean that others see the character the same way. Don't get me wrong, I find it sad when people miss characterize a character I really like. However, you aren't catching me in the comments or reblogging a post to dog on someone just because they didn't get a character right in my eyes.

Especially in fanfiction, IT'S FANFICTION! Of course your favorite character isn't going to be 100% accurate in the fanfic. There's nothing wrong with voicing your opinion or giving valid advice. Just make sure to do it in a plight way as not everyone can right EVERY character accurately.

"X or Y character would NEVER be a [Insert whatever] or act this way as a [Insert whatever]!" No shit, they aren't that in cannon and the author of the fanfic can't read the characters mind to know how they would actually act in that hypothetical.

It's up to interpretation how they would act, and most fanfic authors write their fantasies/hypotheticals how THEY imagine it to go even if it isn't accurate to the character. If you think you can write them better then go ahead and do it, but leave other's fanfics alone if they don't match your criteria.

Rant Post / Long Post.

Am I the only one frustrated by how people act on the Internet? Especially in fandoms, I see people attacking or stalking someone just for liking something harmless.

For starters, in a lot of fandoms people get upset if you ship two characters together that are incompatible romantically. Be that enemies, best friends, never interacted, or of the same/opposite gender.

Now don't get me wrong, ships that are illegal are rightfully disgusting and should NOT be shipped. However, if they are perfectly legal then let it be. I understand not liking or even being repulsed by a ship, but you don't have to attack someone for it.

Simply block them or move on. You don't have to make your hatred known or harass them. What infuriates me further is when people agree with me but then attack someone just because they ship something that is legal but may be questionable.

There may be aspects to that dynamic that can make it problematic but not illegal. In my opinion most ships have problematic things in them, but that does not make it illegal or a pro-ship necessarily.

One ship I see is Kurapika × Chrollo. Now I DO have problems with this ship, but not the people who like the ship. The ship IS problematic but I personally don't think it's a pro-ship as it isn't illegal since they're both adults in cannon.

I wouldn't attack people who ship this despite myself having problems with it and personally not really seeing the appeal. However, I can acknowledge just because someone ships something I don't like or see potential in it doesn't mean they are a bad person or deserve hate.

Another misconception with shipping culture is that people think if you ship something that you automatically want it to be cannon or that you see it as cannon.

This is NOT and NEVER will be true. While there are people who do act or think like that, the majority do NOT! Someone can enjoy a ship without wanting it to be cannon. One example I can personally think of is Gojo × Geto. It isn't cannon however I love the ship. I won't want it to be cannon even though I heavily enjoy the ship.

Many people hold the same sentiment when it comes to ships. For myself, I personally assume people who participate in shipping culture do it for fun and not because they want a cannon ship. It makes things a lot more easier thinking like that as it'll change your views even on ships you don't like.

I don't agree with all ships, but I do know most just want to have fun coming up with "what if" serious and some enjoy romance so why not combine the two? People may ship something just because they see themselves in the characters, like the color palet, enjoy their dynamic, or just like a specific trope.

Now does this mean you have to like every ship or be okay with any ship in the fandom? NO, it just means when you express your dislike for a ship be mindful of how you do so. Remember, shippers are still people at the end of the day and as people, we all have different views on a relationship or characters.

As long as you aren't attacking the people or being disrespectful everything is okay. Express your takes or opinions in a respectful and polite way.
