During the hunt by Scotland Yard detectives to find the thief who stole letters sent to Princess Anne by the Queen’s equerry Commander Timothy Laurence, even the Queen’s then private secretary Sir William Heseltine was taken aback by the number of palace staff who were fully aware of this ‘confidential’ relationship. He would be just as surprised by the number of staff who discuss the possible identity of a secret admirer who, just before Christmas, sends Princess Anne a red rose which is taken to her rooms with her morning cup of Queen Mary tea
