Virga. 1776
My Dearest Mister Jefferson,
Though I ought not write to thee at all, for every line I pen out feels a waste of both ink and patience, I must confess—do not let it swell in thy enormous ego—that I miss thee very dearly.
I miss thy laughter, thy absurdly scent of perfume, and the nimble touch of thy fingers wandering through my hair. Thou art vain beyond measures, insufferable in temperament, and far too enamoured with thyself, yet the passing moments have wrapped thee in such familiarity that I cannot cast thee aside, no matter how often thou as provoked me.
Mistake this not for softness, however, for thou remains the most exasperating of the demons. The others would call me soft for writing such mush, and thus I trust thou possess enough decency not to parade this before them merely to tease me.
Yr Obedt Servt,
Js. Madison @madisonarchives
