I feel like a lot of my struggles as an arospec person also overlap with the struggles of being in a poly relationship

I mean poly people please correct me if I'm wrong because my only experience with it is with a polyaffectionate qpr so I mean I could be wrong for sure but

It seems to me both groups have to fight this idea of

"Sorry but you aren't doing relationships right, you aren't doing family correctly, are you sure you don't just have low self esteem"

With aro people it's like "you can't just have close friendships! You can't just not have kids! You just are too scared to put yourself out there!"

but when i've tried to explain the concept of being poly to people I've gotten a lot of "it's suppose to be two people in a relationship!! you can't

let your partner be with other people! Don't you respect yourself enough to demand they only be with you??"

And like this friggin sucks cuz it's like

I mean we can all also enjoy defining the exact parameters of our relationships and completely ignore societal expectations so it's not all bad!

Anyway like idk of anyone else can relate but I felt it was worth talking about

An update on my view point on this

I've found that while I am aro-spec, I am closer to the demiro or greyro end of things

When I made this post it was in regards to my experience with my QPP and her boyfriend

Since then I have also gotten together with a second partner and our relationship is romantic

And I've realized that if it's weren't for the aro community I would have never realized I was polyamorous

Being in a community where the idea of the nuclear family has been completely thrown out the windows it has in much of the aro community has given me room to explore alternate types of family

Yes a family can look like a mother, a father, a son, a daughter, and their pet dog, Spot

But a family can also look like me, my partners, both of my partners' partners, our three cats, and that duck my qpp found in her yard as an egg

Anything as structured and formulaic as the idea of the nuclear family will inherently exclude and ostracize the majority of people who are trying to pursue that model and especially affects people who don't want to follow that model at all

A good way to fight that toxicity is to normalize the idea of a family coming in lots of different shapes as we are working to do in these two communities
