first time apartment renter advice I wish someone told me
you just got your first place. Maybe it is a tiny studio in the city or a shared 2 bedroom with your friend. Either way here are things I wish someone told me when I moved out for the first time.
1. Skip the cheap sofa trap.
That $200 boxed sofa from wayfair or amazon looks convenient. It ships to your door and the pictures look cute. Do not buy it. They sink when you sit and your spine will hate you. Check OfferUp or Facebook Marketplace for a solid second hand sofa instead.
2. Do not let decor become your whole life.
It is fun to plan your dream space. It feels cozy to rearrange and search for ideas online. I spent months avoiding hosting people because I did not think my place looked ready to host. Live in your home. Let it be imperfect while you figure it out.
3. Avoid the $50 Amazon squeaky metal beds .
They squeak so much that it WILL ruin your sleep and your mood. Second hand wooden frames or highly rated quiet frames are worth the hunt. A good bed changes everything.
4. If you fall behind on rent it is scary but you have time.
The threat of eviction sounds urgent. The process is slower than you think. Look for extra work or ask for a raise. As a last resort your 401k can be accessed in hardship situations. It hurts your retirement but surviving a rough period matters too. Stress about housing is brutal so do what you need to stay stable.
5. Do not beat yourself up about mess.
Motivation comes in random waves. Some weeks you will feel stuck. Then one night at 3am you suddenly want to clean the entire place. Use those bursts of energy for the deep work. You can also invite someone over and let the pressure help you tidy up. Whatever works.
6. Check Poshmark for home decor deals.
They have a lot of brand new curtains and duvet covers for half the price or even less. Worth browsing before buying full price.
7. Switch out plastic where you can.
Use glass for food storage and avoid microwaving plastic. A glass air fryer basket helps. Coffee pods create microplastic too so pour over coffee is a good alternative.
Think of a meal you love. Learn to make it well. Meal prep it. Repeat. You do not need to be a chef to eat well at home.
