Aspen looked at the silver fox and shrugged, she’d been pretty much eating everything in sight to console her feelings and now she was drinking. “I… Why do boys suck.. You should be able to tell me why they’re imbeciles..”

amusement washes over his face. the last thing he expected to talk about was boys, and especially with a young woman such as herself. still, it provided entertainment during a bland night, lips curling into a small smile. “that’s just it. they’re boys. not men. boys haven’t matured. men are mature.”

Melanie nodded, smirking a little. The man was clearly a very good talker. “I imagine it takes a lot of money to keep a hospital running,” she chuckled, now curious about the hospital. She considered the possibility of donating, her mother always told her to be more philanthropic. Eyebrows rose as she grinned. “My clients? They’re the kinds of people that keep me near constantly busy. Mostly A Listers, if you’re into all of that,” she told him with the wave of a hand.

"the kind that go to galas and like to give their money to good causes?” he asks with a sly grin, and though it may sound like he’s joking, tony is one-hundred percent serious about the question. if he could get more celebrities to show up and not just ceos and people like that, the hospital could make a lot of upgrades. “could be good for publicity~”

That’s incredibly impressive, I find people in that field fascinating because you have so much more of an insight into how the brains work compared to someone who engages in some other career path.” As a sort of frustrated mathematician Alice was always interested in people who had been able to pursue the career they had freely chosen for themselves since she’d had that taken away from her. “It’s a little daunting. I’m well…I’m neither one nor the other, although technically i’m not meant to enter into politics at all.”  

“we know the hows, psychologists know the whys.” though he’d taken a few psych classes in his hay days back at stanford, he was always much more interested in the mechanics of the brain than anything else. with a tilt of his head, he takes a sip of his bourbon before setting it down and leaning in a bit. “oh? that’s cryptic. i don’t suppose you’re some kind of journalist, then?”

Since Ines had been acting since she was very young, it was no surprise she was more often than not slipping into doing it without meaning to when she was out in public. Especially in front of someone he wanted to impress, which she certainly did with this man. “Radiant, I like being called that. Maybe he saw you coming and new that he could never compete, so he thought it best to just cut his losses.”

Watching him take a sip of the martini she reached out cheekily to pluck the toothpick that was in it holding two olives out between her fingers. Placing it in her mouth she pulled both them off before chewing slowly, smirking at him. The burn of the vodka had penetrated through the whole snack, burning the back of her throat, but Ines loved it. There was something dangerously different about flirting with this older man, she waned his approval all of a sudden, because he must know what he was talking about if he was here. “I mean, I love a good plaque. Especially in a pretty blue.”

Smiling her white teeth broke out between her painted lips once more, left hand moving to touch the top of his arm deliberatly. “So are you going to stick to one person tonight or am I going to need to fight for your attention all evening? It’s not something I want to lose after all.” A small giggle left her again, one hip dropping slightly as she fluttered her eyelashes at him.

radiant. he pockets the word in the back of his head, making sure to use it again should he ever see her after this. her comment makes him laugh lightly, shaking his head. “maybe he did. either way, i’m sure you’re way out of his league,” he winks at her.

the women he tended to pick up at these galas were almost always predictable. but NONE of them would have gotten the olive out of his drink-- and eat it in front of him-- as if they were the only two in the room. he watches with the utmost amusement in his eyes, amusement and interest, his grin slowly getting wider. with her hand on his arm, a small shiver runs up his spine. he knows for a fact she’s going to keep his attention all night. “i think you already know the answer to your question,” words coy as his voice lowers just a bit.

Ines didn’t even want to try and suppress her smile anymore, taking his arm gently in her own while a blush crept up her neck warmly. “Well thank you, I would love that. It can be a little daunting at these things when you are left by the person you came with.” Okay so she was playing coy now, the one thing Ines had never suffered with was confidence but the girl was playing the part rather nicely. Walking carefully alongside him the woman’s eyes don’t leave his for a second, instead relishing his gaze like it was a reward for something. Looking nice maybe. “They’re buying looking like good people, it’s a bit weird if you ask me, we all know they wish they were spending it on shoes.” She certainly did, a tittering giggle as he kissed her hand, the other going to her chest. “Oh goodness, you’re…very charming aren’t you. How come you’re here in your own Tony? It makes no sense to me.”

with the way she walked in that dress, head held high and shoulders pushed back, tony knew damn well how confident she was. but he loved the game, and so he kept playing it. “see, what i don’t understand is how he could have ever left your side. that dress, that face? tony whistles and pretends to swoon. “maybe he has some insecurity issues. doesn’t want to be outshone by such a radiant woman.”

as someone comes by with a tray of martinis, anthony grabs one and thanks them, taking a sip before turning his attention back toward ines. the comment she makes about the rich people earns a light laugh from him, shaking his head. “it’s also more they like to think they’re helping. which-- they are, don’t get me wrong. but they also get a plaque in the main lobby. trust me, though. they have plenty of money to be spending on shoes as well.”

and there comes the question. why, at fifty-six years old, was anthony middleton alone. he merely grins and shrugs, taking another sip from the martini. he’s been over this with others countless times. he knows how to answer this question. “more fun going alone. i don’t have to stick to one person throughout the night unless i want to.” the implication of her being the most interesting person in the room layered in his words.

Heart fluttering like as she was flattered the woman looked up at him through her eyelashes, a coy smile on her face. “Oh, well this is the first time i’m at this gala yes. I was invited by someone I used to work with, although I’m not sure where he’s gone.” The blonde glanced around, looking for his but hardly bothering much. After all the man in front of her was far more interesting. Meeting his eyes once more she could feel a tingle run down her spine, smile growing bigger. “You…you’ve been here before?” Of course he had, he looked incredibly comfortable in the company he kept, just anouther thing that made him more attractive. “I’m Ines. Ines Roux.” She felt like she needed to introduce herself to him, wanting his name as well.

“well then, in that case...” tony offers his arm for her to take, a regular prince charming. “...allow me to be your arm candy.” he winks and turns up the charm a bit more. “no one as elegant as you should be without.” and when she takes his arm, he starts walking her around, and though people glance at him and try to get his attention, it’s all on the woman beside him. “a few times.” more than a few times. “these parties are all the same. rich people who are looking to waste a little money to make their names look good.” and upon her revealing her name to him, he stops walking and stands in front of her, taking her hand, bowing slightly in front of her, and pressing his lips gently to the top of her hand before standing tall again and walking side by side once more. “well, it’s a pleasure to meet you, ines. i’m tony. middleton.” he says with pride.

“Surgery, you’re a surgeon? That’s impressive. What is your specialty?” Alice asked with genuine interest, no doubt the man was high up in whatever it was because he was certainly older than herself. He must have put considerable work into his career. Taking a sip of her whisky she shrugged, raising her eyebrows. “Honestly it’s because I can come here without being spotted, I know that sounds crazy because most people don’t even know who I am, but for every hundred normal people ignoring me you get one who won’t leave me alone or wants my head on a stick.”

tony raises a brow at the interest in him. he’s certainly not complaining, small smile on his lips. “mmhm. i’m a neurologist.” he fights himself on saying the best in the country as it’s just become part of his motto, not as a brag or anything. “eesh. sounds daunting.” he takes another sip of his bourbon, smile turning sly. “don’t tell  me. you’re either a celebrity... or a politician.”

Melanie hummed at his words, nodding along. “Interesting,” she mused. “Most people these days are very…into themselves,” she chuckled a little, leaning against the bar as she watched the other man. An eyebrow rose and a smirk graced her lips as she leant against the bar a little more. “Donate, huh? And how much do you usually get invested?” she asked silkily, grinning at the man. She was very intrigued by the man in front of her, curious to know more.

he won’t lie, he loves talking about himself. but he doesn’t brag about what he does or how many lives he saves. it’s why he brings in so much money. rich people love him for that. “let’s just say it’s a lot. enough to keep the hospital happily afloat,” anthony flashes a grin before tipping his glass back. “what about you,” he nods towards her. “what are your clients like?”

Melanie chuckled a little at his words, nodding her head. “I suppose you’re right, really. Though social media has been good and bad for publicists,” she admitted lightly. A new drink was placed in front of her and she took it, taking a long sip as she listened to the man speak. An eyebrow rose. “Really?” She asked, curiously. “Why so interested in other people’s stories? I’m sure you’ve got a few of your own…”

tony thanks the bartender and raises his glass to melanie as a toast before taking a sip of his own. he shrugs lightly at the question, keeping his eyes locked with hers, though. “everyone might bleed the same, but everyone’s got a different story. i just like knowing what makes people unique.” ah, and himself he loves talking about. but now was not the time. “i’ve got plenty. but i save them for when i’m getting people to donate to the hospital,” tony grins, shameless in the fact.

“Oh, it is,” Melanie trilled, chuckling a little. “But it’s not exactly a necessary job…well, in some cases it is. Some celebrities just don’t know how to keep their mouths shut,” she chuckled again, shaking her head. She grinned a little more then, at his words to the bartender. Leaning a little closer, she let her tongue flick out against her lips. “So tell me Tony, why are you in a quiet little bar like this tonight?” She practically purred, eyes meeting his and holding his gaze.

“oh, i can imagine. i feel like everyone could benefit from having a publicist, especially with social media nowadays.” he rests his chin on the palm of his hand, engrossed in the woman next to him. “need somewhere quiet to relax. sure, i could just go home... but i like talking to people. getting to know their stories. i like listening.”

Since being on trauma this week and under Isabelle’s gaze the brunette had spent the last week in the peads office at pretty much every spare moment she had. Since she was usually in the peads ward she got on well with the nurses who just let her do her thing.

Sitting cross legged in the chair she was forking something green and leafy into her mouth as she heard a very familiar voice and her fork tumbled out of the hand and hit the floor with an echoing clatter.

“I….” She trailed off and looked up, and as clear as day, her father was stood their, in a white coat and then everything clicked. “You…. you’re the new chief aren’t you…” She whispered and quickly stood up, hugging him awkwardly. The last time he’d really seen her they were arguing, and the time before that - she was half naked in a on call room with one of his colleagues. “Hi daddy…”

anthony being in a suit and his white coat, he’s not surprised she put two and two together that quickly. “gee, how’d you guess?” he’s almost sheepish about it. the hug is... unsuspected, to say the least. but a pleasant surprise, for tony’s wrapping both arms around her in an embrace. “hi, princess. surpriiiiise!” he says upon pulling back with a wide, easy grin. “i’m actually kind of shocked it worked. didn’t think i’d be able to go this long without you finding out.”

Melanie turned a little more in her seat, so she was facing him as she flicked a strand of hair over her shoulder. The tumbler in her hand almost empty, finishing it before answering. “I’m a publicist,” she breathed after a moment, placing the glass down and signalling for another. “Not nearly as rewarding a job as I imagine saving lives is…”

“aw, don’t say that. i’m sure it’s a rewarding job in its own way.” the words are reassuring, as if to show her he doesn’t think he’s above anyone else-- and he doesn’t. when the bartender comes around, he downs the rest of his bourbon and orders another as well. “this round’s on me,” tony tells the bartender, but keeps his eyes on melanie, lips turned into a permanent amusing smile.

it’s a wonder how tony kept being chief surgeon at the hospital his daughter worked a secret up until now. good to know the people working under him were trustworthy. he decides it’s about high time he show his face if he wants a somewhat better relationship with his daughter, and he’d be lying if he said he hadn’t been thinking about this moment since he got the job-- and how amusing to him her reaction would be.

he knows exactly where to find lana. after charming his way past the desk, he makes his way to the office behind-- where his only child sits eating her lunch. right on time, just like she does every day she’s at work. her punctuality makes him chuckle, tone warm and lighthearted. “do you ever go out to eat lunch or do you always eat the cafeteria food?” he asks, casually leaning against the door post with a small, amusing smile.

She chuckled a little at his correction. “Surgeon. And the best in the country…I’ll be sure to remember that then,” Melanie mused, smirking again as she sipped her drink. “I’m sure it is,” she smirks widely then, giving him a wink back.

the chuckle that leaves his lips is almost breathless, an ease washing over his entire body as he slips into his social, flirtatious behavior. “so. clients, huh? what do you do, if i may be so bold as to ask.”

angeline’s eyes flickered up to the man in front of her. “not necessarily hard, it just dragged on too long.” she replied as she brought her glass of scotch to her lips. “i do vaguely remember you being a good listener. though, i’ve met better.” with that, she chuckled softly, shaking her head. “i say that as a friend.”

“ouch,” he’s playful with the word, chuckling and shaking his own head as if she wasn’t telling the truth. as if he never started getting skittish the more he listened to what his partner had to say. “oh, yeah. i know. but is he really better at listening than i am?” it’s almost a challenge, though he’s not serious about it. he quite enjoys marty’s company, and he knows he’s probably a LOT better than he could have ever been.

An eyebrow rose then. “Ah. You’re a Doctor then?” She asked, smiling back at him. “What an honourable profession. It’s lovely to meet you Tony,” she greeted. She placed her own drink down then, extending a hand. “My names Melanie,” she told him, accent thickening.

“surgeon but yes. one of the best in the country,” he adds a wink onto it before taking her hand and bowing his head slightly, his eyes sparkling in the dim lighting. “pleasure’s all mine, melanie.”
