They have always complimented each other well.  That’s why they’ve made such a good team in the past, and now, with an even more united front, there’s nothing that can stop them.  They’ve always been in charge of handling the Mutts, and in a way, Elena is keenly aware that this uprising is a direct result of her not being there.  Of them not keeping better track of their movements and alliances.  Not that they’d ever really had alliances before.  But after this, they can really start to pick up where they left off, relationship wise.

"They want you not at your best," she agrees.  Really, if he were anyone else, he’d have died.  But he’s Clay, and he’s strong.  She’s glad he fought.  Glad he fought for them.   "But this will help sooth those sore muscles at the very least."  She kisses him back, fingers trailing against his cheeks.  "I need you to be focused today.  Will you promise me you’ll let me fight, and you focus on whomever you need to kill?  I’ve got your back.  I need you to focus on protecting your front."

They are an amazing team, and they read each other better than anyone else. It was why Jeremy believed that they should hunt the Mutts together, keep them in line. Between Elena's nose and smarts, and Clay's brawn and inelegance to back Elena's up, they were a force to be reckoned with. And he won't placate her or lie to her that this has nothing to do with her stopping, but at the same time he won't blame her for it either. He should have come after her, though he'd always hoped that that last fight had been like the others and that while she'd needed her space she'd return on her own. But they'll be better now, and they'll make sure that this never happens again. That's all they can do.

Clay's not just strong, he's stubborn. And he refuses to leave his mate, especially if there's someone after Elena. "Well they're getting some of what they want." It's a grumble, like he really hates to admit that he won't be at his best, and like he wants to rip out throats for those that did this to him. Clay's head tilts into her touch and his eyes close as he nods in answer for the moment. "I promise. I'll focus on the mutt in front of me first and foremost, but be careful." His eyes open again and there's a serious look on his features, worry that he won't be strong enough to protect himself let alone her this time. "I'm sorry I failed you, Elena."

She is dominant to him, and has been since she got her feet under her as a wolf.  Now that she’s back with the Pack and back to doing what she does best, there’s nothing that can stop her.  Nothing that he can do or say that will keep her from looking after him.  He’s just shit out of luck at the concept of being in charge.  No.  Elena rules him.  He’s just lucky she rules with a fair hand, when they’re not at each other’s throats.  And that won’t happen…as much…now that they both know the full truth.  They both are aware of what’s going on, and they can grow together.  Once Santos and the rest of this uprising is squashed, of course.

"You need more time," she says, reading him better than a favorite novel.  She knows her man.  Her mate.  She knows what he needs and what he wants.  She knows him.  She knows that if she’s not careful, one of these bastard Mutts could get the better of him, and hurt him worse.  He needs the time they don’t have.  "I’m just hoping that the bath will give you some more get up and go.  But…I’ll have your back, I promise."

If he's being truthful, she was dominant to him even before he bit her. More subtly, but she was. He courted her, in his own way, and he's always given into her more than any other person he's known; even Jeremy and Nick. He doesn't know how to tell her no, unless it comes to her safety and what he thinks will keep her whole. Though, truthfully, he doesn't mind her being in charge, he could see her as a good alpha one of these days. Her in charge sends a shiver down his spine, he enjoys her firm hand in some situations. But first they need to squash this uprising and come out whole.

There's no arguing with her, no trying to pacify her that he's fine. He may try to not show the pain, but he doesn't lie to her. "I wish we had a little more time, but they won't let me take the time to heal a hundred percent." Not if they're smart anyway. And while most haven't been too smart, Santos and Marsten both have semi-decent brain function and will work that much out. Plus there's the question of the greater picture behind them. Catching her when she's close enough, he'll pull her to him gently so he can kiss her. "I trust you, Elena, you know that. And I'll have your back. Being with you like this helps already though."
