It took me a while to get Rogue's face. I wanted a face that looked sweet, if that makes sense. I made her shorter because I like the idea that she's this adorable pocket-sized charmer that can punch you to the moon. Her color palette is a warm yellow with some greens and orang, accented with black, to reference her costume plus her sunny disposition. I gave her a big bag to hint at her strength and heart accessories like her earrings to imply her yearning for love and physical intimacy.

WIP: After Remy, I knew I had to do Rogue. But her face wouldn't come to me and it was a struggle. Finally though it did and I was so happy I nearly finished it immediately.

Conflicted about her shoes as I was thinking of using it for Kitty.

What do you think Remy smells like? I think he smells of stale women's perfume, cigarettes, and cloves.

Sneak peek: Originally, I had Psylocke Kwannon next but I couldn't seem to get her face yet. I doodled Remy and it came to me so quickly. I wanted a sensual face, a bit playful and roguish. The kind of face you'd say yes to while vacationing somewhere far away. And, yes, I think he'd be weak to a man-bun.

I went with the rugged look but I've also included what he might have looked like clean-shaven:

Who run the world?

Emma, Ororo, and Jean strutting their stuff. Trying to think of a name for this series.

I drew Jean next as I had a clear idea of where I wanted to go with her.

I chose green to reference her Marvel Girl days, this burnt red and yellow gold accents for her Phoenix days. Her earrings are in the shape of the Phoenix icon.

I wanted to depict Jean as having this shyness despite being one of the most powerful beings on the planet. I gave her larger eyes for wonder and innocence as opposed to Emma’s calculating slits, naturally thicker brows to the White Queen’s manicured ones. I gave her freckles too, a common thing it looks like among red heads. The coat, which is quite big for her, is most likely Scott’s. You can’t see it but beneath the jacket she is wearing an old bulky watch of her father’s.

WIP: I have often seen Jean Grey as this quiet and shy girl, despite possibly being one of the strongest beings on the planet. I gave her strong brows to show determination and larger eyes for innocence as opposed to Emma's calculating slits. I also gave her a softer face and freckles (final product).

After Emma, I wanted to dress up Storm. I chose a bright African textile for visibility and tassel pants for movement. They often dress her up in black or silver and I wanted to go the opposite route which is color and prints. Ororo hair has often been depicted as straight and flowy so I wanted to do braid upon braid and maybe recall the mohawk she’s worn time and again.

Emma Frost fans? Drew her in something camp and romantic.

I usually see her in something sexy or even skanky but recent issues of the X-Men seem to have been correcting that. With Jumbo Carnation at her beck and call, you'd think Emma would be attired in bigger and campier outfits as time went by but that's just me.

The shoes are a revise Dolce and Gabbana bootie, btw.

Back to drawing the X-men tarot cards again. This time, the one arcana you don’t want coming up: The Tower. Catastrophe, accidents, danger, and destruction. Dashed dreams, foiled plans, chaos and change? Who better than La Bruja de Escarlata herself. One of the things I wished the marvel writers explored was the Scarlet Witch’s processing of her trauma and her relationship with those she traumatized as well. Her hair here represents her state of mind and the falling figure represents the mutants who she depowered (some in midflight). The sky is blue because catastrophe comes even out of the bluest skies while the black lightning you see isn’t lightning at all but reality cracking and shattering.

Took a break from the drawing to concentrate on a side hobby: designing and making shoes. Joined a local fair, albeit one that's "fancier" since it attracts a more affluent crowd. Noticed the demographic skewed a little more mature so I did a pair of flats inspired by Turkish sabahs and my grandmother's alpombras (vintage Filipino velvet slippers). Usually done with beadwork or embroidery, I went with a gilded silk jacquard fabric; I noticed that if viewed at different angles and when hit by light at different spots, it gave off glints and shimmer. I chose to highlight this aspect by keeping the upper bare save for a gold metallic toe cap-- something modern to leaven the fabric's old-timey sense of glam. Perfect shoes to be snooty in or to fulfill your magician lord dreams.

I drew Alison Blaire aka Dazzler as The Star tarot. Here she’s depicted during a concert, creating a light show extravaganza for her patrons. As the premiere mutant celebrity, she’s an inspiration for other mutants.

To peer into the future is to invite death and change. Irene aka destiny has always been a favorite of mine, more so these days with the spotlight firmly on her now. I think she fits the high priestess card, with its message of secrets and intuition.
