This blog is to hopefully discourage reposting of artwork, gifs, and edits, within the mcr fandom, by pointing what is and is not an original post. This blog was inspired by this post and this blog.

hey angel! 1. i love you so much (but you know this) 2. i always for so awful for editors when you guys make things and they get stolen (there's never an excuse for it tbh) but i also think a lot of people would love to have clarification on how we can tell when a gif/gifs/edit is stolen so we can help do something about it in regards to reporting it, telling the OP and not reblogging it. how do we know?

HOW TO RECOGNIZE STOLEN GIFS

If the person doesn’t usually post their own edits- a lot of times people will use gifs from music videos and such as reaction gifs. If the blog who posted it doesn’t usually post their own edits, it’s most likely stolen.

If the sizes don’t match- if you see a gifset and the sizes of the gifs in it are not the same (e.g. one is 268 pixels wide and another one is 540 pixels wide). It means that the gifs were probably stolen from multiple gifsets.

If the style of the gifs doesn’t match- for example, if some of the gifs are in black and white and some aren’t or if the text is in different fonts. Again, it means that the gifs were probably stolen from multiple gifsets.

If the OP looks sketchy- there are some blogs that all they post are stolen gifs and gifsets. So if you see that all the posts on the blog are gifs and gifsets and most of them have about 20 notes, they’re all stolen.

If the caption is more of a comment that a caption- for example, “OMG look how beautiful she looks!!!” or “I loved that performance so much!!!”

If the OP doesn’t have a creations tag- if they didn’t tag the post * or “my gif” or something like that it could be stolen. Maybe they just forgot but if that’s like a theme that’s going on and it has happened more than once, it’s possible that the gif is stolen.

If the post isn’t tagged at all- if the OP didn’t tag the gifset #tswiftedit #taylor swift (for example).

If you saw the gifset before- that’s a given, but if you recognize the gifset as someone else’s it’s obviously stolen. Also if you happen to remember who originally made the gif or the gifset please let them know.

for editors– you can report stolen gifs at tumblr.com/abuse, under the copyright violation category. sometimes it takes them a while but 99% of the time they remove the stolen gif

y'all do realize if you keep reposting gifs without permission/credit/following the gifmakers rules, gifmakers will eventually get completely fed up with all of you and stop making content for you to enjoy.

gifmakers spend HOURS sometimes days, weeks, etc on gifsets. from creating ideas to downloading/finding videos to colouring the gif to sharpening, etc, it takes so much time and gifmakers do this completely on their own free time, for free. just so y'all can enjoy content of your favs. not to mention the time gifmakers often spend doing requests from other people just to be nice and make someone else happy!

so with this i remind everyone to stop? reposting gifs?? i don’t care if you “saw it on google/twt/etc”, if you did not make it, It Is Not Yours To Post. that is a very simple concept im sure all of you know full well of. and when you come across gifs that are clearly reposted, don’t reblog them? like if you see a gifset with multiple different colourings, a gifset with someone else’s url in the watermark, a bunch of gifs in a textpost with no referral link, etc. it can be pretty easy to tell when something’s been reposted :/ also saying “credit to original giffer” means nothing. ASK permission before using someone’s gifs always.

it’s okay if you genuinely weren’t aware until now, but please, stop disrespecting contentmakers and thinking you can completely take advantage of them and their works.

I just started out posting pictures and sourcing them from the website i Got them from, does this count as original content?? No one has posted those pictures on tumblr before and i am the very first one to do so, in addition to adding a link source. If that counts as original content, any tips on how to protects myself from reposters? They're not my pictures so i can really edit them or put a watermark on them, Thank you so much for your time!!

Hello! thanks for reaching out, this is my opinion on the matter, since you’re not editing or making any type of work with the picture it doesn’t seem fair to me to have your watermark posted on it, because in this case you will be claiming content that you just found, but being honest didn’t put much or any work into. My advise would be that if you want to claim the pictures partially, because thats what editors do, you invest some time into photoshop or another editing app and even with some light editing a watermark from you would be valid. Otherwise just keep on sourcing to the original without putting anything on the photos.

i thing @smooshywrites is a serial reposter like i saw a picture they posted where the watermark didn't match and they post a lot of gifs that I've seen around before with a lot of notes but their post only had like 3 notes so I'm pretty sure um hope this helps

I’m not sure yet. It looks like the gifs they post were made in a similar way/style and since those don’t have a watermark, I cannot tell if they were made by someone else. If you could link me a post that does have a watermark or is clearly a popular edit/gif, please do so! But looking through the last month of their archive hasn’t made it clear yet.

leathermouthpunx likes to repost + delete captions and take claim on peoples edits, i know leathermouht on here has called them out multiple times but they dont seem to have any date scheduled to stop until someone else calls them out again, its pretty frustrating.

The main things I’m seeing on that blog are reblogs. Can you link me some examples of reposts/taking claim? They’re blog is a little hard to navigate in the first place.

The blog seems to just post generic photos that can be found anywhere (along with the image you linked). There’s not much I can do about that, especially since they haven’t done much in a year.
