First of all, Han says FLAT OUT in the novel: “I wish my child was normal. Like me.” He thinks Ben was always drawn to the dark side and he gave up on his son long ago. He didn’t know that Snoke was watching from the shadows, he didn’t know that Ben was being taken advantage of. To hand off your son to a relative because you can’t relate to that child is kind of… not good. Han is sorry for that, and so is Leia. Han hoped Ben could forgive him, his last thoughts are literally: “I hope someday he can forgive me.” If you watch the bridge scene and then tell me that Kylo’s not completely suffering the entire time, you have no idea how to read emotions or comprehend that kind of deeper psychological trauma.
Han and Leia loved Ben, they weren’t horrible parents at all, but they aren’t blameless either. We have many clues from Han’s point of view… he wanted a normal son. Plain and simple. Even if Snoke wasn’t around, it was obvious Han had resentment that Ben was born strong with the Force and Han & Leia both had fears that Ben would be like Anakin. That’s exactly why they didn’t tell him the truth about Vader, they doubted their own child. I don’t know about you but that would fuck me up big time. Snoke preyed on an insecure angry child and was able to do so because the cycle of doubt and fear had already begun. Kind of a self-fulfilling prophecy of mega tragic proportions.
I’ve stated this before but I have yet to truly write about it in-depth, but Kylo Ren is balanced Light and Dark. He’s not supposed to be a damn Jedi or whatever the fuck it is that Snoke wants him to be. He’s supposed to be balanced. Like it wasn’t bad enough he had parents who weren’t prepared to deal with a Force-Sensitive child, he also had a master who wasn’t prepared for a student who can’t fully embrace what said master is teaching. And similar to how Han especially couldn’t deal with a Force-Sensitive child when only 5 years prior to having him he didn’t believe in the Force, it’s probable that Luke, who believed Anakin was saved by choosing Light over Dark and who was using the old Jedi Code to teach, just didn’t know what to do with Ben, who’s very being is incompatible with Jedi teachings.
Antis don’t care about canon book quotes. Believe me I’ve tried to present canon evidence and they don’t care. “It’s not in the movie so it’s not canon.” Also take what Adam Driver and JJ Abrams have been quoted saying about Kylo Ren. They both said Kylo’s parents were absent. And honestly. Saying a 5 year old having a voice inside their head that they don’t necessarily want isn’t that bad. What the actual fuck? Do they have children? Do they know how impressionable they are. Children are innocent. Snoke preyed on him. His parents were absent and Luke wasn’t prepared to deal with it. Even Han said “Luke blamed himself.”

And padawans get sent to the temple relatively young. (I.e. The younglings Anakin killed were probably 5-8) They would have stuck to that so Ben, on top of not having his family around AND Snoke being an all around bastard, would have turned to the dark side relatively young (maybe 15-18?). IN THE MOVIE!!!! Leia confessed to knowing the boy she was raising wasn’t her son in my above statement (“I should never have sent him away. That was when I lost him”). She saw that he was being tormented by a dark force, either motherly instinct kicked in or she sensed it through the Force. The novel probably explains it better but just that simple line that, APPARENTLY, blew by the anti’s head, shows so much into Ben’s past. That entire scene did honestly. What? Does that mean nothing anymore? Because it holds the basis that Ben was mentally abused as a child?
Even though Ben turned at 22/23 it doesn’t matter–it’s a miracle he was able to hold Snoke off that long to be honest. I’m guessing Han & Leia sent him away at 16-ish because I’m sure he was an angry teen (read: Han never related to him and wished he didn’t have his powers.). They did what they thought was best, and I feel bad for everyone involved :/

Oh hell, child psychology 101: children are receptive to the attitudes and feelings of their parents. If parents are uncertain about their child, their child will recognize this, thus they will internalize feelings of separation which turn into rejection and finally abandonment. This is not a hard concept to understand, recognize, and accept. Shit, we hear this all the time with the nature vs nurture arguments which have ultimately shown that the large portion of our development is due to how we are nurtured. Can I just headdesk and repeat?!
If this were a real life scenario, say two parents, one with a familial history of schizophrenia (having been diagnosed themselves), the other with no mental illness, would the antis have a leg to stand on when the child of this couple turns out to have the illness as well?! Would they so righteously mock the child, suffering from auditory hallucinations, with “oh well, maybe s/he likes the voices!” It’s a child ffs. Children have no concept that the voices are not there. Their cognitive reasoning isn’t developed enough to understand reality from non-reality. Shit, some people who have early onset schizophrenia grow into adulthood assuming that what they experience is normal, because no one knew about/recognized their illness and taught them differently/got them treatment.
I don’t understand how anyone can effectively lay the blame solely on Ben’s shoulders.
I swear to God intro to psychology, logic, and ethics should be made mandatory in either/or (or both)the high school and college curriculum. How people can’t look beyond themselves and their small realm of consciousness utterly floors me.
☝🏻☝🏻☝🏻 YES. And this is why I get so irritated with Pablo–he wants Kylo to be this emotionless badass and embrace the darkness because Ben Solo is just a bad seed and a horrible person. I disagree. I think Kylo has legitimate anger issues… I think he has reasons to be upset even if Pablo doesn’t think so. Even now Kylo Ren himself has non-villainous qualities that very striking in contrast to the rest of him and with other SW villains. Kylo does not love Snoke, they have a relationship NOT based on mutual respect but one fearing the other as a false father figure. He still has compassion for Rey and Han, something Star Wars villains condemned to die in the darkness just don’t possess. The very fact that there is light in this guy and it causes such pain is blatant proof that his nature is fighting itself, his fate is not meant to be with Snoke. The Force itself is fighting with Kylo Ren and because of Snoke he has no way out… but maybe with Rey he can find a way.
I have to have hope because if Kylo ends in tragedy I honestly don’t know how far I can emotionally invest myself in future movies. I hate to say that because I adore Rey and I adore Finn, but if they plan on wasting a well-written character whom I can relate to more than anyone else, I will lose all faith in this story they’re telling. You can’t present me with this character, give him a heart, give him a soul, give him wit & sass, give him a tragic backstory, give him the settings up of a redemption arc and then just… not do it. Kill him off or die in the darkness. I can’t take it, guys. WHY make him so personable if I’m not supposed to relate to or feel something for this character? Why even bother with a tragic backstory or a crush on Rey? Nothing in TFA would make sense as far as Kylo is concerned.
That “doesn’t appear to be evidence that Kylo didn’t like having snoke around“ is one of the most horrible and heartless things I read ever.
It sounds too similar to that “maybe she asked for it or she liked it” a lot of people say when a woman is raped. It sounds too similar to that “it happened because they were too tempting” a lot of people say when a child is molested.
It’s 100% victim blaming. It’s evil. It’s disgusting.
