âTheyâre people?â âThey were, until they had all their humanity taken away⊠All emotions removed.â âWhy no emotions?â âBecause it hurts.â
She thinks about that sometimes over the years. After everything. After the walls have sealed them universes apart. After she sees the Doctor one last time but only to say goodbye, to tell her that this is the end, that she can never come back. After everyone moves on and carves a space for themselves in this new world that had left a gap just for them.
She thinks about the Doctor stood before a cybermanâs head as he told her, âAn old friend of mine. Well, enemy.â She thinks about the way he couldnât distinguish between the two for a moment. She thinks about the way heâd spilt about old monsters and the world heâd burned to destroy them. She thinks about Sarah-Jane, an old friend heâd never been able to speak of.Â
She thinks she understands some of that now. She wonders if he keeps silent about her the way he did Sarah-Jane. Thinks sheâd understand that too. She thinks about Sarah-Jane telling her the Doctor had been called home by the Timelords, how sheâd never seen him again. She thinks about the way the Doctor never talks about them; talks about the beautiful planet, the trees, the grass and the two suns it used to orbit.
She thinks about the Doctor screaming at the Nestene, trying to bargain with it even after itâs shown itself to be hostile. She thinks about the Doctor and how his pity for the Gelth had made him blind to their intents. She thinks about the way he wears his scars and if sheâs one of them now, or if he keeps her hidden away with his memories of people. She wonders if he still lets his pain and his anger fuel his need to save another planet, another people. She wonders if it still burns a hole through his hand the way thereâs a burning in the back of her mind.
She thinks she understands him in a way she never could before as she fights to prove him wrong. Words and numbers falling from her lips in a way that reminds her of Jack, remind her of him. Things come to her easier these days, things sheâd never understood before when theyâd gotten lost in techno babble back before. Before sheâd gotten stuck. Before Jack had stayed behind to fix the Earth. Before theyâd left him alone, despite their best intentions.
Things slot into place for her now in a way that she doesnât understand how but comes from the golden, burning place in the back of her mind that she knows shouldnât exist. Should be locked behind fortified doors. Shouldnât still be glittering, but hollow and cold. Shouldnât leak secrets of the universe into her ears. Should leave her clueless and frustrated, grasping at dead ends in a way thatâs expected of a girl off a council estate that never finished her A levels. A girl that had followed a stranger to the stars and picked up a few more along the way because she hadnât understood then; but sheâd seen the same lonely shadow in him that sheâd felt in herself.
But she understands things now that she shouldnât. She understands dimensional travel. Understands the cracks in the walls and the scars in the void that never completely heal if you press just right. Understands the physics and theory better than anyone of her time period should, let alone her. Understands why monsters are easier to face than the ones youâve lost. Understands why there had been locked doors on the TARDIS in the same way she canât bring herself to decorate the blank room sheâs found herself occupying.Â
And she wonders if the fire ever burns out for the Doctor in the way the universe feels a little too heavy for her sometimes. She wonders if he sees her in the way she hears his words in her mouth. And the shadows sheâd seen him seem heavier in her own eyes these days. She thinks about her mumâs words on that fateful day.
âYou even look like him.â âHow do you mean? I suppose I do, yeah.â âYou've changed so much.â âFor the better.â
She thinks about how it had filled her with pride at the time. She thinks about how sheâd thought she was fitting into this new world that heâd shown her. How sheâd become more than just another nineteen-year-old girl from the Estates. She thinks about how she doesnât bother to fit into this world. How she doesnât try to force this world to make space for her where there is none. She thinks about how that sentiment has become even more true in his absence. She does look like him. From the way she carries herself to the way she carries her scars and her secrets, lets them make her someone else.
She thinks about the worlds sheâs seen dying as the stars blink out of existence across reality as she fights her way back to him. She thinks about the way sheâs let every single one of them harden her when she couldnât save everyone. She thinks about the nonchalant way the Doctor had spoken of the empty Earth before the sun had swallowed it whole. She thinks she understands how heâd focused on the survival of the species of the planet living amongst the stars instead of fixating on the planet he couldnât save. She thinks about the lone survivor of a planet with its twin suns and the little blue box that remains its planetâs only reminders of its existence after the universe moved on.
She thinks about all the people they hadnât been able to save. About how every single one of them had burned deep inside of her, fueling a resolution to do better next time. She thinks about how the first few fires had burned her before she learned how to put up the appropriate armour up. She thinks about the Doctor and his own armour. She wonders what taught him to put walls up between himself and the fires.
But mostly she thinks about the ways the years slip by her unnoticed, despite her mortality and the way she feels as though sheâs never getting any closer to what feels just out of reach. And she wonders if itâs the same for him. She wonders if his immortality weighs on him the way her humanity weighs on her. She thinks she understands now the adamant way heâd spoken of humanity and how it hurts, the way thereâd been no room for argument. The conviction in his words as a man burned too many times.
Stefan should've known it was going to blow up in his face the second Klaus suggested he help dagger Kol. Particularly after how everything went down the last time heâd helped Klaus to dagger one of his siblings. That creeping feeling of trepidation had only grown when Elena too had come to him with her own plan. Two conflicting plans all to put down one Original for a cure that had apparently already led to two separate massacres. He was starting to wonder whether it was worth it if it demanded such a high price just to find it. What would happen when it was finally within their grasp?
-àŒșâââŸâșâàŒ»-
"I don't wanna just dagger Kol, I want Jeremy to kill him." Elena's words had already registered before Stefan foolishly tried to disguise them with the revving of his bike.Â
Really mate? You should know better, had the 20s taught you anything? He wasn't some common halfling vampire that could be stumped by mere parlor tricks. It appeared he'd grown soft, let the Mystic Fools believe they were safe from retribution after all their plots against him, especially Finn's death. Well, it was time he rectified that. He'd already lost one brother after keeping him safely tucked away for 900 hundred years, he wouldn't let their hubris take another from him.
Damon's death had been swifter than he'd liked but the young vampire had never seen it coming and that was what had mattered in the moment. Time was of the essence to save his little brother, he'd already lost his youngest, the Other Side wouldn't claim Kol as well. So one second he'd been beyond the barred door and the next he was in front of the weakened vampire. Damon had barely enough time to turn at the sound of the door screeching open before he was dead, and Klaus was gone.
"If you're going to threaten me again Klaus, you can save your breath." Were the first words out of Kol's mouth before he'd even had a chance to speak.
"It seems your paranoia has gotten ahead of you, brother." Klaus ignored the scoff and muttered 'You'd know' that followed. "The Gilbert's are planning to kill you."
The line went deadly silent as Kol came to a stop, Klaus could just hear the grinding of his brother's teeth over the line but that was enough for him to picture the murderous expression he must be adorning.Â
"Are they now?"
For all the Mystic Falls bunch believed him to be the biggest monster, it was Kol that had garnered the more volatile and bloodied reputati on in the supernatural world of the two. It was Kol that the older sirelings feared. The ones that were old enough to have seen the Originals in the flesh, to have watched the myths about them be born. The ones that knew if Kol had appeared at your door then no amount of pleading would save you. Kol was no wolf, he had no need for the extended chase that Klaus had subjected Katherine to. The hunt only served to amp up the fear and apprehension in Kol's eyes.
Because Kol had been a witch - not a wolf - before their turning he knew that the torment was what really made the death significant, it was the suffering beforehand that ensured the earth would be scorched with the magic of their death. And it was something that Kol specialized in as a vampire.
"Well, you can forget about suggesting I return the daggers for my own safety. With the way you've all been fumbling over yourselves for this cure for your darling former blood bag, I don't trust that you won't just serve my daggered body over to them. This cure has clearly blinded you to any sibling loyalty you once felt." And with that, the line went dead.
That moment where they turn to see Klaus standing in the doorway after they just killed his brother feels like a scene out of a horror movie, and that's exactly how it should've ended
You're telling me Kol would use his empty hand to grab the second stake, leaving both hands occupied against any further attacks, without dropping either? You're telling me a thousand year old vampire who's been on the run from an Original hunter his entire immortality, would make that mistake?
I wish people could feel the telepathic vibes I'm sending them sometimes but it's probably for the best cus some of my coworkers would definitely be dead
