There’s something so uniquely terrifying about memory issues. I feel like my self is slipping away from me.
Here’s the thing I feel like a lot of folks don’t get: I’m not trying to forget what you said. Honestly, I really tried not to. I can’t control what I do and don’t remember—forgetting things just happens. It’s annoying for you, I know, but for me it’s distressing as hell and when you make a big deal out of it rather than just reminding me you make me feel ashamed. I’ll remember that, at least.
It costs you nothing to be kind to people with memory problems. Please. It’s scary enough without people treating memory lapses as a personal failing.
oooo yes the fireworks are very loud sometimes. I'm glad there weren't many where I was. I got to stay in with a friend at their apartment/dorm and we yapped for a while and then watched some silly videos on youtube.
We also got f'reals which is like these little ice-cream/milkshake cups from the gas station (specifically kwiktrip where I'm from). they are very yummy. I'm not sure how much you like cold/sweet treats but. you might like them I think. also I got to try a new monster flavor. it's passion fruit. just tastes like citrus, kind of like a mix of the sunrise/orange and the papillon/peachy flavors. it's not bad though.

Hm. Lerato and I did a similar thing. There were not many fireworks around us but there were... enough.
I do like "sweet treats". I like cold ones less. They can be good, they can also cause brain-freeze, which is terrible every time. I have never had Monster. Lerato has, I think. I will tell her :)
Happy new year Antonia!!!! I hope you got to do something fun that you enjoy, regardless of what it might've been!

Happy new year. Yes, Lerato and I spent the night watching movies on the couch to distract from the fireworks, it was good. I hope you had a nice time too.

The missions their strange little team of mercenaries had been getting sent on recently were just easy. Simple task after simple task. Even targets from Khonshu were not difficult to deal with. Easy enough that they were fine splitting off to deal with things. It made double the money in half the time. Antonia was never the one sent off on her own, which bothered her a little bit but she understood the logic behind it. She was their team's worst player. That was fine.
This time, she and Marc were sent to deal with something she figured would be as easy as everything else. Somebody owed somebody money. She did not much care for the details of it at this point. It went sideways fast. The guy they were looking for was gone by the time they got there. He had anticipated their arrival and set up bombs around the place. Once they were too far in to get out quickly, those bombs detonated. The two of them were mostly fine physically. Marc's cape was an effective shield against debris for the both of them.
Of course, that did not matter much. The force of being blown backward, the ringing silence after the blast, the fiery rubble around them was all too familiar. All to real now, this was not a nightmare, the shock of pain caused by hitting the wall was enough to confirm that.
Not a dream.
She was really back here again. Again. Her mask filtered out smoke but she swore she could still feel it clawing at her lungs.
"Dammit." Marc muttered, grunting as he got up. It didn't take long before his injured areas were wrapped with bandages and healed. He looked around, but all he could see was fire. A crumbling building that was set on fire.
"Oh God. We gotta get outta here." He took a few steps towards an exit he spotted in the distance. The building would be able to hold itself up, but he didn't know for how long. And he wasn't exactly planning on sticking around to find out. "Toni, c'mon!"
Marc started to make his way through the fire, but he paused when he didn't hear Toni behind him. No confirmation, no footsteps, nothing. He whipped around and saw Toni still leaning on the wall from the blast. His eyes widened and his heart started racing with worry. Goddammit.
He ran over to Toni, crouching down next to her, praying that she was still alive. She had to be, right? They'd survived worse. "Toni?" He called out, putting a hand on her shoulder and using his other one to shield them both with his cape. "Toni, what's wrong?"
She pulled away from him, though there was nowhere for her to go so she really just curled in on herself further. If she was back here, if the same things waited outside, she did not want to be 'saved'. She would rather die a fiery death than do that again. But it could not be happening again, could it? This had to be a dream.
Not a dream.
Or something else. Not real. It could not be real. She refused to believe that it could be. There was no smoke. She took a shaky breath. It was staggered but her lungs got air, not smoke. The world came into focus. The fire was real. And the rubble. And the blast. But the rest was not. The rest was not. This was a mission. With Marc. In the present. Not the past.
They needed to get out, the fire was definitely very very real. She tried to force herself to her feet but was met with nothing but a sharp pain through her leg. She must have landed on some sharp debris. Damn. That was going to make this situation difficult to get out of.
Marc watched as Toni struggled to get up. She was clearly injured, which wasn't good news. We need to get out of here fast. He looked back at the exit point, trying to figure out how to get through the fire as safely as possible. He glanced down at his cape, wondering if it would be of any use. If it can stop bullets, surely it can choke out a bit of fire...
He turned to Toni, explaining the plan. He didn't know what was going through her head right now, though he could tell from her reaction that it was anything but good. "Okay, Toni, listen to me. We need to get out and we need to get out fast. You see that exit there? That's where we need to be."
A piece of rubble fell behind them, so Marc rushed the rest of his explanation. "I'll walk ahead and clear out the fires to try and make you a path. You follow me as fast as you can, with your shield over your head." Marc could see the fires spreading closer and tried his best to stay calm. "We're going to make it out of here. I'm not losing you too."
"Follow me!" He shouted over all the noise, starting to put out some of the flames in front of them with his cape.
Get up and walk out. That was it. That could not be too difficult. If anything, it seemed too easy. It would not be with the pain her leg was in but, in theory, it was a simple plan. The execution of it would be more difficult. She had felt worse pain. She forced herself to her feet.
She cringed at how close Marc was getting to the flames. She knew they would do nothing to him, he had healing on his side, after all. But still, somebody getting so close to fire felt unnecessarily risky. She felt bad that he had to that for her.
She followed him out, limping the whole way. There was not much she could do about that. It did slow her down, which was dangerous but also annoying. Once she found a pattern to keep herself walking without thinking about the fact that each step felt like taking a bullet to the leg, she had time to think about other things. Or, one other thing that had drawn her attention.
"not losing you too."
Their team was rarely open about their pasts. She was pretty sure Wade knew it all but even he had the decency to keep it to himself, mostly. She knew nothing about Marc's past. It should have been obvious that he had lost a lot but somehow this was the first time it had occurred to her. Or maybe it was not. Maybe she had thought it a thousand times but that was not the focus.
""you too"..?"
She did not realize she had actually spoken the words out loud Marc actually responded to them.
Marc didn't want to acknowledge the words that Toni had repeated. He hadn't meant to say them out loud. He didn't want them to know about who he used to be. About who he'd lost.
"It's nothing." He said quickly, not really wanting to delve into his past. They were all terrible people who'd made terrible mistakes, he knew that, but that didn't make it any easier to talk about his own. Right now, he just wanted to focus on getting Toni out.
After some struggle, the two had managed to escape the flames. Smoke poured out of the destroyed building and the ground around them was starting to catch fire too.
"We gotta keep moving." Marc lead them to a nearby alleyway where they would be able to rest for a few moments. He unmasked himself and coughed, still feeling the effects of the smoke from the building.
Within a few seconds, the bandages wrapped around his body, curing him of his burns. He felt the pain for only a moment before it was all gone. He took a deep breath and sighed with relief. Then, he looked over at Toni.
"How're you holding up?"
She looked down, inspecting her suit. It was singed but mostly undamaged. The searing pain she was feeling was entirely - or at least mostly - in her head.
Now that she could get a good look at it, her leg was bleeding pretty badly. That meant the suit was damaged, which mean that, more likely than not, at least a little bit of the burning was actually real.
Damn.
Well, that was a problem for later. Not too much later for risk of it getting any worse, but it was not something she could deal with right now. They had to keep moving.
"Fine."
"Okay... Okay, that's good." Marc was trying to level out his breathing, as it was still slightly affected by the smoke. He closed his eyes, thinking up a plan as quickly as he could before anyone found them.
He opened his eyes, looking up at the night sky. His view of the stars was narrowed by the two buildings that formed the alleyway they were hiding in. "Khonshu!" He called out, hoping to summon him.
In an instant, the large skeletal god appeared, craning his neck down from his perch on the rooftops. "What have you two idiots gotten yourselves into now?"
"Not the time." Marc hissed, inhaling sharply. "We gotta get out of here fast, and I don't think either of us'll make it very far on foot. Khonshu can fly us both out of here in seconds." He explained, taking a deep breath.
"Hm, I see." The god hummed, gently tapping his staff against the brick wall. "You'll owe me, Spector. I do not like using more... extreme powers like these."
Marc rolled his eyes. Of course Khonshu would use their current situation for his own gain. "Fine, yes." He moved his attention away from the god and towards Toni instead. "We'll be out of here quick. You just gotta hang on to me while we're in the air, okay?"
He extended his hand to Toni. For a moment, he found himself trying to decipher her emotions through the mask. He could never tell what she was feeling. The only time her feelings seemed clear to him was in the building. The distress she looked to be in hit much too close to home. He wanted to ask her about it, but now was neither the time nor the place. And he wasn't too good with talking things out either.
Whenever somebody else on the team stopped and spoke to air, she had learned to assume they were either speaking to Khonshu, or something that only Wade could see and which he refused to explain to them. This was obviously Khonshu, which meant he had some sort of strange 'godly' way out. She was not sure whether to be excited or very worried. It really did not matter, this was the only option. Marc was right, they would not make it far on foot. She hesitated for a few seconds before taking his hand.
"Alright, hang on." He warned her before nodding up to Khonshu.
The god stood up, slamming his staff against the roof of the building. He raised his empty hand towards the night sky, which seemed to make it darken even more. Then, he pointed his staff in the air, making Marc fly up in an instant.
As he shot up, the mask wrapped itself around his face to protect him. He made sure Antonia was holding onto him properly so she wouldn't fall.
The two sped through the sky. Marc narrowed his eyes, trying to spot the apartment. He glanced down to check on Toni, who didn't seem to be doing great, but then again it was always a little hard to tell. Though he could probably infer that speeding through the sky around 3000 feet in the air didn't help very much.
There it is. He noticed the apartment's balcony in the distance. That's where he'd have to land... As they quickly approached the area, Marc tensed, hoping he wouldn't crash.
Antonia was confident that the level of fear that snapped into existence in her chest as they left the ground was not normal. They were flying by thw power of an ancient god, there was no way they would fall. Still, she hated how high up they were. That bit was probably normal, the fear of heights was one of the most common fears. But it should be gone. There was no chance they would fall. No. There was no chance Marc would fall. That was it.
They touched down on the balcony of an apartment. As soon as her feet hit the ground, Marc, who was very much not on the ground yet, fell backwards.
Marc hit the ground. "Ow-" He rubbed his back, then looked behind him to make sure he was alright. Nothing seemed bad, it was just a rough landing. He looked over at Toni, who had been able to land correctly and let out a sigh of relief. They were both alright.
He got up, dusting himself off as the suit slowly shifted away. "God..." He sighed, entering the apartment. Almost immediately, he was aware that Wade was gone. The house was too quiet. His eyes wandered around until they landed on a sticky note stuck to the fridge. Of course... Marc quickly read it over. Something about getting groceries... He couldn't be bothered to decipher whatever Wade had written.
He muttered a few things and slumped onto the couch, closing his eyes. He desperately needed rest after all that. He could already feel a headache forming.
"You'll owe me later, Spector." Khonshu boomed from the balcony. Marc couldn't be bothered to respond. The god's voice wasn't making his incoming headache any better.
He opened an eye to check what Toni was doing.
Antonia slipped into her room to change out of the tactical suit. Logically, she should have put on shorts, they would have made it easier to handle the wound on her leg. But she was pretty sure she did not own a single pair of those so she chose a pair of sweatpants that she did not much care about getting blood on. She finally got a good look at the injury, there was a shard of glass lodged in her leg and a fair bit of burning around it. Nothing she had not handled before, but still unpleasant and painful. Where did they keep their medical supplies? Would they have enough to deal with this? Both other people on this team healed from most injuries in minutes. Asking Marc would be worthwhile, he spent more time in the apartment than she did.
She walked back out to the common area, "Do we have medical supplies anywhere?"
"Uh-" He stared at the injury, wondering how she wasn't reacting more. "Yeah... In the bathroom- Hold on, I'll go get it." He slowly got up and made his way into the bathroom.
From the mirror, Steven looked down at him. "Is the kit even going to do anything at this point? I don't think it was made for injuries this bad..."
Marc was equally unsure, but it wasn't like there was much else they could do about it. "It'll help a little." He got up, holding the kit. Steven's expression mirrored his own, which was a little unusual. The two didn't usually react in the same way, but when it came to Toni they seemed to be on the same page.
"She'll be fine." He told Steven, which seemed to reassure him. Marc walked back into the living room, medical supplied in hand. He put them down on the coffee table, then looked up at Toni. "Here they are."
He sat back down on the couch. Toni probably knew what she was doing, but he'd stay in case she needed help. "So how you doing? Aside from the injury." He added the last part quickly.
Antonia sat down, not on a chair, but the edge of the table. She opened the kit and set out a roll of gauze.
"Hm? Uh- fine. Grab me a glass of water. Please."
She sucked in a breath through her teeth and pulled the piece of glass out of her leg. That was the wrong order. Water should have come first. She should deal with the burns first, right? It would be fine. It would be fine. She pulled a sleeve over her and and put pressure on the cut with it. That probably would not wash out. How sad.
Marc returned with a glass of water and handed it to her. He looked down at her leg, which looked... not great. "That's probably gonna scar."
He sat back down on the couch. He wanted to bring up how she froze during the mission, but now didn't seem like the best time. He was worried though and he wanted to know why it happened. And if he could help.
"Toni..." He paused, mentally debating if he should ask. "You froze. When there was the fire." He prayed that this wouldn't anger her or anything. "I've never seen you freeze like that before."
"It will not happen again."
Of course, she could not be sure of that. But it was easier to deny. She was, slowly, getting it through her head that injuries on missions no longer came with punishment or yelling. Still, it was an instinct to deny. She cleaned the wound with the water. Marc was right, it would scar. Nothing new. Though, it did hurt, more than physically, that she would now be stuck with scars on her previously non-scarred side. She would hardly see this one, it would be covered most of the time. But still.
"Do we have petroleum jelly? Vaseline."

How sad.

Hi Toni!!! I passed my finals for this semester! And after 15+ hours of being on busses, I made it home at like 1am ! And now I get to go see a band I like and haven't seen since I left for college! Aaaa my house is freezing tho and evilly empty cause my aunt decided to sell it while my dad is in prison cause she's tired of paying for it and almost everything is cleaned/packed away . very evil indeed.... But still, it nice to be back !
Also I started therapy two weeks ago! and when i get back to school in Jan, I'll have my second appointment and maybe meet the psychiatrist and hopefully be put on meds!
Have good day, hope you doing well! - 🪐
Congratulations! I have little experience with written exams but from what I can tell they are very hard. Seeing music is always good, I am glad you got to. Being home is also good. So is therapy, Lerato tells me. I would not know. Happy to hear you are doing well! <3 :D
(to the mod) back when you first started this blog my friend thought it was me and that I was talking to myself because we briefly had the same profile pic
//I actually do remember that, I think. At least, sometimes I mixed up this blog and one of my mutuals and wound up going "hello??? I did Not post that??" and then quickly realize that no. No, I did not.
Send '🎁' (gift emoji) to see what my muse got yours for Christmas!
Antonia if she made toast
Lera does own this thing. She says thing like this every time she uses it. :(
I'm sorry but that is so funny to me
It does not even effectively make toast.
So... you could be Toastmaster if you tried
Flamethrower.
Not an effective toasting device either. Have you heard of a toaster.
I forgot toasters were a thing, I have one in my house
I have done that.
Flamethrower seems extreme though.
I think I just found the mental image funny when I said that
