They really awake his bloodlust, uh
The virgin pit bull vs the chad Great Pyrenees
Listen. I grew up with these dogs. Im a cat person, no shame, but Great Pyrenees are hands down my most trusted domestic animal and are hardcore as fuck.
When I was a kid, between six and fifteen, one of our Pyrenees would escort me, off-leash, between my grandmother's house and mine. I'd just have to call him, and he'd show up and walk me there, placing himself between me and anything he considered threatening- Cranky farm animals, holes in the ground, bodies of water, etc.
That same dog found a (unfortunately deceased) lamb my grandfather had buried a few hours earlier, dug it up, realized it was cold and not breathing, and carefully carried it to our barn, where he covered it neck-deep in straw and tried to cuddle it warm again to bring it back to life.
One of our older dogs, at about sixteen years old (keep in mind, this breed tends to average out at about 12 years max) had arthritis in his hips, a bad back, and a respiratory issue, was fucking ancient and essentially palliative, but would still go stock-still out of nowhere, let out one subtle "boof", and then set out at an awkward-yet-speedy bunny-hop sprint at the slightest whiff of a cougar, bear, or wolf. Like, grampa would jump fences. Gentle geriatric giant would kick up to 7k to protect the family, never mind the three other, much younger dogs already on the case.
When I was a baby, like a literal in-diapers infant, he would lay on the ground and let me dress him up as a wizard and crawl all over him with zero complaint.
His nephew was 100lbs and often alarmed visitors who mistook him for a bear, yet never so much as bumped into a person in his life and feared only string and kittens.
a Great Pyrenees is not Balto. A Great Pyrenees is Robert McCall, John Wick, and John McClain wrapped in Marry Poppins and a snuggly Mr. Rogers wool sweater.
They are not only the best dog, but I would argue that they are also the MOST dog.
I will die by this
I have a female 2 ish year old Great Pyr we rescued and the ONLY reason she has not fought the coyotes in the woods to the fucking death is because I don't let her.
With me she will lay on her back on the couch and plop her giant goofy fluff head in my lap and paw at me with her giant crime paws until I pet her gently, and then she will snuffle happily as I do so. She is very careful with the cats. She likes to nap sprawled on the floor like an inconvenient white shag carpet, preferably right over the air conditioning vent. She won't bite into an egg I give her unless I break the shell for her first. When I walk her past the neighbor's cows she has to sit and stare at them and the calves for a bit. When she was a stray she was chased out of several cattle barns because she kept trying to get in to sleep with the cattle and calves. Never tried to hurt one. She will also sit and stare at chickens for hours very happily. Won't hurt them, will just, you know. Keep an eye on things.
But holy fucking shit if she hears a coyote nearby she is a snarling ball of canine rage in about a tenth of a second and nearly snapped a heavy duty leather leash she was on trying to charge off and commit coyote murder. If someone broke into our house without me telling her it was okay that dog would kill or die no questions asked.
Flock guardians are the BEST. Their prey drive is almost absent, but their desire to Protect is in every hair they shed (all over everything). Herding dogs have to have a job to do, to be kept busy. Guardians, though, are doing their job while they're draped all over your lap: they're watching and listening, and storing up love for their charges so they have the courage they need when it's time to rain Hell on something dangerous.
Deeply appreciate your work bc I tried to organically hunt thru AO3 for BNHA fics for the first time in god I think a year or two and was immediately unpleasantly reminded that the fandom at Large is on entirely different wavelength than the handful of Tumblr fan creators I follow... Why does All Might get ignored or bashed and Aizawa almost unequivocally made the father figure???
Glad you appreciate my dad might work! If i had to take a guess as to why aizawa is more popular, i think it’s a combination of people being drawn more to his broody/sarcastic personality, in addition to him being more conventionally attractive by anime standards. I tend to see All Might bashing as an admission that writers can’t find a way to make it make more sense for Izuku to have a closer connection with Aizawa other than turning All Might into the bad guy. Same deal as the people who feel the need to break up canon ships by making one person abusive to the other can leave them without question.
What does Yoda mean when he says "rejoice for those around you that transform into the force"? why does he want Anakin to be happy after losing someone and not mourn or miss them
Here's the thing about Scene 77.
Yoda's in a situation where Anakin is giving almost no information, to the point where Yoda literally needs to complete his sentences for him. As seen in the Revenge of the Sith script:
If Anakin's only gonna give him vague information, Yoda can only give generalities. And Yoda speaks in riddles.
So, with regards to the part about "rejoicing for those around you who transform into the force", that's simply Yoda’s way of saying "when you're sad, try to remember the good times you had together".
This is also fair advice. He’s not telling Anakin “how dare you mourn or be sad instead of laughing! Bad Anakin! Start dancing and celebrating! Now!”
He’s telling Anakin to cherish the moments he had with that person that’s about to die, which will, in turn help him accept that inevitability, come to the conclusion that they had a good run. Instead of pulling back from these fears and this pain, he should face them head on and accept that it's happening.
It’s very general advice, granted. But it’s good advice.
And if Anakin were asking casually, on a normal day? I think he wouldn’t sneer at it, and would actually reflect on it.
Like, he went to see Yoda for a reason, right?
Yoda usually gives him good advice.
Hell, one time, Yoda counseled Anakin about his concern for Padmé, during the Clovis arc:
But Anakin isn't at his best during Scene 77.
He hasn't had an ounce of sleep and he's scared out of his mind. He's not thinking straight. He's hoping for a concrete, tangible response but isn't giving a concrete scenario.
So when he gets this answer:
He dismisses it as fortune cookie nonsense and Yoda essentially telling him to "give up on Padmé" which he just won't do.
But that's the crux. Yoda doesn’t tell Anakin to “give up” on everything he fears to lose. He says *let go.
Which isn’t the same thing.
Lucas explains the nuance many times. My personal fav is this one:
“ There’s a line between loving somebody compassionately and caring about them and helping them. But the other line is not to be greedy or once you are greedy then you get fearful. You don’t want to lose what it is you have that you are getting. So you have to learn to give up everything. And ultimately for a Jedi Knight, it’s very easy to give up. One of the things they give up is marriage. They can still love people. But they can’t possess them. They can’t own them. They can’t demand that they do things. They have to be able to accept […] their mortality, that they are going to die. And not worry about it. That the loved ones they have, everything they love is going to die and they can’t do anything about it. I mean they can protect them as you would ordinarily protect, you know, ‘Get out of the way of that car.’ Somebody charges you with a gun, you knock the gun out, but there is an inevitability to life which is death and you have to accept that. ” - George Lucas, Star Wars Celebration V, 2010
Anakin doesn’t see that difference. Like, in his mind, accepting that there are things beyond your control is synonymous with giving up. Which isn’t the case, it’s a sign of maturity, not weakness or carelessness.
This is also perfectly illustrated in the TCW episode where Ahsoka and Barris are trapped under rubble, slowly dying from the lack of oxygen. Luminara readies herself to "let go", Anakin is hearing "giving up". It's two separate things (I talk more about that scene here).
Gonna conclude with a headcanon:
Had Anakin just put all cards on the table in Scene 77, just full-on revealed he's married to Padmé, they have a baby but now he's having nightmares like the ones he had when his mother died... everything would've turned out okay.
Like, first off, Yoda would've probably given more concrete advice, probably would've sent some Jedi healers over to her suite, etc.
Secondly, it's not like Yoda didn't know something was going on with Padmé. Anakin is really bad at keeping that secret.
Them being actually married and having a child would be a surprise to be sure, but Yoda and Anakin have this grandpa/grandchild bond, which we've seen many times during TCW.
And Yoda has also been confronted with a situation like this one before, as seen in Dooku: Jedi Lost.
I like to think Yoda did learn from that incident with Braylon and would help Anakin.
Finally, I don't think Anakin would've been expelled. Or if he had, it'd be waaaay later. Right now, the Jedi Council is:
close to finding the second Sith Lord,
just as the Chancellor legally took ownership of their Order,
just as they're hunting Grievous,
while there's a whole war raging on.
They got more important shit to handle, and they've already made plenty of exceptions for Anakin, so they'd at least table the discussion, and at best just make another exception for the Chosen One and come up with a plan on how to move forward this situation.
And again, on a normal day, Anakin probably knows this.
We see, at the start of Revenge of the Sith, that he's starting to get fed up with the secrecy, and we know he knows Obi-Wan knows about him and Padmé.
Deep down, he probably knows that it'll all be fine if he just tells it all.
But Anakin isn't thinking rationally, he's thinking emotionally. So he keeps his cards close to his chest and says as little as possible.
And it doesn't help that Palpatine's been manipulating Anakin for 13 years into thinking he can't talk to the Jedi.
Nothing better than stealing from rich people.
when i say i want media to have an impact on me i mean it in the meteor that killed the dinosaurs sense. like i want it to be apocalyptic for my sanity.
My favorite “humans are space orcs” idea is that trope where aliens kidnap some humans for their zoo, except it ends up like Jurassic Park. And the poor Alien Humanologists who were invited to the park are like:
“You mean you locked up a pack of curious, highly competitive persistence predators with NO enrichment in the enclosure? You FOOLS! If you had bothered to throw a basketball or half a box of Legos in there, KE-X9 would still be alive!
“Well of course they climbed the retaining wall! Did you think to study their evolutionary lineage AT ALL?”
The humans would find a way to use the basketball and legos to escape. I mean one time a guy somehow escaped from a prison in Mexico without breaking any laws so his escape would be legal so honestly given enough time the Jurassic park situation is inevitable.
Jurassic Park would be awesome, but now that I think about it I also kind of love love the idea of humans as the alien zoo equivalent of those octopuses that climb out of their tanks and wander around taste-testing other exhibits or throwing sub-par shrimp at handlers.
Like they’re totally unable to figure out what’s happening because the cameras keep going out, but every night things get moved, or stolen, exhibits are disappearing, WHAT IS GOING ON, they’ve moved facilities twice and it’s still happening, are they haunted, are the ancestors angry, WHAT IS HAPPENING!?
And then a weary humanologist is all ‘… your humans are getting out’.
“That is impossible.”
“They’re getting out.”
“That enclosure is COMPLETELY SECURE.”
“And yet somehow they’re getting out.”
“THE HUMANS ARE NOT GETTING OUT.”
“Oh yeah? I bet you twenty glarks they’re getting out. Stay after closing time with me and I’ll show you.”
*next day*
“… the humans were getting out.”
“… why did they keep going back in, then?!”
(In a deeply embarrassed mumble) “They said they weren’t going to escape until they finished their behavioural experiments. Uh. On us.”
Part of the reason that Han, Luke and Leia work so well as the main trio is that they're all mistakenly under the impression that they're the sane one in a 'two idiots and the voice of reason' trio trope. Like "Somebody has to save our skins!" and someone has to stop Han and Leia from murdering eachother mid lovers spat, and someone has to keep the twins out of trouble involving force nonsense. And they're all equally as much trouble as eachother, but they all think they're the only sane person. And it's wonderful.
#lando also thinks he is the sane one and is NOT #Chewie also ALSO thinks he is the sane one and is not #R2 knows he's insane and revels in it #Threepio is actually the sanest one and he's the one that masqueraded as a god that one time
WHAT’S KILLING ME ABOUT THIS IS: THOSE ARE NOT LIGHTSABER BLADES AT THE END OF THE CHAINS YOU CAN VERY CLEARLY SEE THEY ARE KNIVES ON THE END OF A CHAIN AND I’M IN ABSOLUTE FUCKING TEARS THAT PADAWAN OBI-WAN WAS LIKE “OKAY LIGHTSABER BLADES ON THE END OF A CHAIN WOULD PROBABLY CHOP MY FOOT OFF BECAUSE I DON’T KNOW HOW TO USE IT PROPERLY. (YET.) “HOW ABOUT TWO KNIFE BLADES INSTEAD? “YES THAT’S MUCH SAFER. ALL RIGHT TIME TO TEST THIS IDEA OUT.” AND NOW I’M CRYING BECAUSE KID OBI-WAN KENOBI WAS LIKE “WELL, I WAS BEING SAFE ABOUT TESTING IT, I ONLY USED KNIFE BLADES, NOT A PLASMA CHAINSAW. SEE? TOTALLY SAFE.” THAT’S IT, THAT’S OBI-WAN KENOBI FOR YOU. SWINGINGS KNIVES AROUND ON THE END OF CHAINS WAS THE SAFE VERSION OF THIS CHAOS BASTARD’S IDEA.
I hope you all know how absolutely balls-to-the-wall fucking obsessed I am with Obi-Wan’s Tatooine daily routine. he wakes up every day like oh boy I sure am depressed but I’ve got to go to my MEAT CUTTING JOB in the MIDDLE OF THE DESERT and then he CUTS MEAT for TEN HOURS after which he very obviously STEALS a bit of it to feed to his PET ABOMINATION and heads back to his DEPRESSION CAVE where he talks to a MEAN RAT that keeps stealing his stuff so he can buy a beat up toy for the KID HE WATCHES WITH BINOCULARS from his ROCK OF SADNESS and after he delivers the toy he goes home to have nightmares and talk to a GHOST HE CAN’T SEE. perfection
#litcherally #the fact that no one seems to notice him really obviously stealing the meat #are they all just like look thats ben and hes clearly been down to his last straw for ten years just leave it (vi @merrillenthusiast)
akljkdhfjbsklsb everyone like we know this is tatooine and everyone here is beat up and miserable but that man is hanging on by a thread and frankly we're afraid of what he'd do if he didn't get that little slice of stolen meat so we're just gonna keep our mouths shut and let him keep very obviously putting it in his shirt
sneakers first win ft. p1h intak’s surprise gift!
I don't know if I missed something or what but I keep going back to that BNHA chapter where Stain and All Might were talking
Stain had no clue about All Might's normal appearance, which does make sense considering he was in Tartarus and I'm sure a good wi-fi connection is hard to come by with everything going on in universe. What doesn't make sense is that two seconds later he somehow knows that the girl cleaning up the All Might statue is the last person that All Might saved
So am I missing something?
Oh, it's actually really simple. You see, Stain is (alas) an All Might fanboy, and as any good fanboy, the first thing he did after breaking out of Tartarus was to break several laws of reality and physic in order to get the latest gossip on his favorite hero, hence why he knows All Might's true form and everything that happened to him!
Obi-wan and Padme as willfully obtuse rivals
Saw this Take on reddit the other day (I know) but I thought it was so perfectly written and captured exactly the dynamic I always felt Obi-wan and Padme to have. I never saw them as friends (and frankly I don't think the on-screen text supports them as friends). They certainly aren't enemies! They share a friend, they share traits, they even share respect for one another - but they are not in league with one another, and importantly they share a subtle current of mistrust for each one another.
Obi-wan outright states he does not trust politicians, Senators in particular. Padme willingly marries a Jedi which is against the Order and Senate's codes of conduct, and blatantly lies to Obi-wan for years. Obi-wan never confronts Padme about his concern for Anakin despite his growing observation of Anakin's instability. They both prefer, in a way, to pretend the other does not exist. Compartmentalized.
Padme and Obi-wan represent, thematically, a dual influence on Anakin - one he must famously choose between Jedi or Senate (spoiler alert: he ends up choosing himself, Sith). It is worthy to note that they hardly ever interact themselves - this is done on purpose.
It is essential for the tragedy narrative that Obi-wan and Padme do not collide and rarely interact with one another. It is their own personalities which ensure this. Years of subtle feigned ignorance between them and purported respect coupled with disinterested avoidance.
The two are almost eerily similar in their delusions (Padme is naive, Obi-wan is arrogant - yet neither believe they are), they overlap almost constantly in Anakin's life, but on their own they rarely interact together. They stubbornly refuse, both knowingly and unknowingly, to ever truly confront one another about this dangerous tug-of-war they are engaged in with Anakin as, for lack of better term, the object of their desire. Yet they are not, emphatically, a love triangle. Anakin is the prize. The Jedi and the Senate are competitors.
These negative aspects to their characterizations propels the Tragedy Narrative with Anakin/The Chosen One as the McGuffin forward. Neither the Jedi nor the Senate are willing to see the truth about Anakin, and both keep their intentions with him secret. Like Padme and Obi-wan, the Jedi & Senate never wanted to admit Anakin's fate might be multifaceted and linked to many different power structures, so instead they seek to direct him on their own.
Anakin as the Chosen One was essentially the harbinger of a message: the Order and Senate need to be dismantled and refurbished. They were corrupt - the same as Padme and Obi-wan (as figures in a Tragedy). But neither side could admit that.
Padme marries Anakin secretly and intends to take him away from a life of service (when she knows he is deeply conflicted about this, & she marries him when he is struck with unstable grief over Shmi), and Obi-wan is seemingly very aware the Council does not trust Anakin and is keeping him on the outside because of fear of his abilities (when he knows Anakin desperately wants to know the truth) - both of these things intend to direct Anakin, unknowingly. Anakin isn't getting what he needs in either direction, nor is he providing it. Nor is the Force - stuck in limbo between these two forces of "good" which are shutting out Skywalker from himself and each other.
Neither Obi-wan or Padme ever consider confiding in one another about this for years, nor does the Jedi & the Senate. It's because they do not want to. It's because deep down they do not trust each other, and importantly, they do not trust each other with Anakin. Despite pleasantries with one another, that mistrust is always there implied in the narrative. The only place Anakin overlaps in this realm is the War.
The war ending is almost unfathomable - because who will "win" Anakin? Anakin enjoys being a general in the War because he can fight for both the Jedi and the Senate, beside Obi-wan who is, ultimately, his true friend despite the struggle, and for Padme as a princess ideal on a distant planet. With the Jedi who he desperately wants to be (though they shut him out) and for the ideal of the Senate (but not truly having to deal with its realities). He is his happiest during the war - though it is an temporary balm, an illusion of inner peace.
Obi-wan and Padme orbit Anakin, each with their own gravitational pull -- Anakin is obsessed with and bound to Padme because of his trauma regarding Shmi (not, arguably, because of genuine selfless romantic love), and Anakin is duty-bound and desperate for Obi-wan's approval (despite, truthfully, having ideas and aspirations way outside the Jedi Code and Order). His fate with both of them is on a collision course for destruction from the get-go.
In the story, neither Obi-wan nor Padme end up being the final keeper of Anakin (Luke and Leia). Padme's death can be looked at as a narrative choice to show that Anakin's and Padme's relationship was founded on unstable principles (Shmi). Yet, he could not leave his soul in the hands of the Jedi (Obi-wan) either, and so destroyed them. Anakin's soul, the Chosen One, ends up in the hands of Bail Organa of Alderaan and the Lars family of Tatooine.
In the end, the children need protection from Vader. Vader of course represents the instability in both systems of Good (Senate and Jedi) and the Sith taking advantage of that. How the powers of Good can easily fall to the powers of Evil when they are divided, secretive, and especially when they seek to control for their own self-gain. I.e. Padme marrying Anakin, and Obi-wan being unable to admit Anakin's mistrust of the Jedi was founded.
Obi-wan and Padme are forced to finally confront one another upon Anakin's destruction. They are forced, in a way, to admit they played a part in it - specifically. The fact that Obi-wan essentially becomes the twins' defacto parent becomes all the more poignant because of this. Obi-wan and Padme, for lack of a better term, become one another's problem at last.
Obi-wan and Padme's dynamic is extremely interesting, and they do see one another as intellectual equals, even admire one another for their skill, but this admiration falls very quickly to their subtle mistrust of one another.
In the end, in OWK, it's obvious Obi-wan fondly recalls Padme with more than a little regret. He recalls a woman, who like him lost everything (and more, her own life!). In the kids, Luke and Leia, he sees hope for a better government (Leia) and a better Jedi order (Luke) - an answer to the mistakes of two parallel but unconnected people - Padme and himself.
The fact that the children are twins is a hopeful sign the future of the galaxy will be in harmony, not opposed to one another, as with the symbolism of he and Padme.
Leia and Luke are miraculously, as per the Force, a chance to redo both the Senate and the Jedi - a gift that could only be possible as the children of the Chosen One, Anakin Skywalker.
The person they both loved wrong and lost.
A list of theories as to why Martha Wayne’s Pearls scattered Like That, despite the fact that real pearls are knotted individually on the strand to prevent Precisely That Sort Of Thing from happening [incomplete]:
One: Martha chose not to wear her real pearls to the theatre that night, as it was a night where there was no one to impress. The string snapped because the pearls were not real, and Martha died for a $100 set you could pick up at Macy’s.
Two: The Pearls, upon understanding this was a symbolic moment in at least one Wayne’s future [and two Wayne’s end], chose to disregard their quality for the sake of a Dramatic Tableau.
Three: no more then three pearls ever snapped off the strand, but to a boy watching his mother choke on her own blood, gasping his name into the suddenly silent night, three pearls was enough.
Four: an opportunistic officer slipped the pearls off Marthas neck as she was loaded into the morgue van, figuring Bruce would not have the wherewithal to miss them. The pearls were subsequently reported as lost, having probably rolled down the drain in the following chaos. Only three were ever recovered, having become stuck in the puddle of blood that was under Martha Wayne’s head.
Five: the pearls, a set Thomas Wayne picked up as an engagement gift and a promise when Wayne industries was collapsing and his fortune nonexistent, were fake, and Martha adored them far more then any of the expensive jewels he was eventually able to afford. She made a habit of wearing them on family outings. Martha died for the sentimental value of a $100 set you could pick up at Macy’s.
Six: the pearls where not real. Martha was wearing diamonds that night. Bone, when exposed to moonlight and the horrified tears of an eight year old, shines like pearls.
Here’s the thing of it: when the prequels came out, an older, largely male audience wanted to see Darth Vader as evil, masculine, the embodiment of power, etc. They didn’t want to see Anakin Skywalker as a vulnerable, emotional kid who was corrupted by outside influences and struggling with his feelings. The story George wanted to tell (and the story that Hayden pulled off so spectacularly) was just something that viewership was never going to like. They didn’t want the villain of their childhoods, the emblem of masculinity, to be a real human with feelings. They were never going to like a movie about Anakin as a multidimensional person—one who cried, missed his mother, simped after a strong-willed woman, and struggled with his internal life. No matter the actor, they were never going to be willing to contend with that story. They wanted Darth Vader to be scary and manly. That’s it.
But the younger audience watching the prequels—the one that had grown up with Vader to an extent, but not to the same degree—learned from these movies that good people can be corrupted by those who want power and don’t value the lives of inferiors. We learned that men in power struggle with their emotions. We learned that boys can cry too, and that they can become overcome with emotion while the women around them can be practical, logical, and successful. We watched these movies and got to know Anakin as Anakin—an endearing anti-hero who took risks and loved the people around him. We got to see what happens when someone is overcome by their fears and anxieties. We learned how fear-tactics and rhetoric can bring about fascism. The values in these movies are strong, yes, but at their heart they are just a really good story. Regardless of awkward dialogue, direction, and CGI, George Lucas told us a really good story about family, love, loss, and our collective existence. Kids like good stories. Hayden, Ewan, Natalie, and all of the other actors did a really good job telling us that story. The prequels add so much depth to the original trilogy. They are what makes the Skywalker story a space opera. It’s shakespearean. It’s just a really, really spectacular story, one that most of the older generation didn’t want to be told.
revenge of the sith is still so fucking funny, because, like, the separatists invade coruscant, and kidnap the head of state. that’s a war-winning action. at that point, they just motherfucking won the war, unless a miracle happens. and then you have half the jedi council and a bunch of other jedi just chilling in the jedi temple, on their fucking doomsday, feet propped up and relaxing, and the council still chooses to call anakin and obi-wan from the other ass-end of the galaxy in the “outer rim sieges” to come fix this shit, like yoda wasn’t right motherfucking there. yoda was sitting on the fucking couch! and they STILL called obi-wan and anakin from the OTHER END OF THE GALAXY. in no ways was anakin spiritually prepared to be a jedi master, but motherfucker i kind of get why he was pissed. i kind of understand that. if i got called into work to save the day and i walked in and the rest of the staff was just sitting, and i still saved the day, and then they denied me a promotion, i’d have fucking quit. he’s not spiritually ready by any means and in fact he’s deeply turbofucked, but i understand where he was coming from. i understand, man.
the comments on this banana bread recipe go crazy
for everyone in the notes asking for the recipe, i found it, it's this one:
Put those ripe bananas to use in the best banana bread recipe ever. Moist and delicious, it's easy to make—one bowl, no need for a mixer!
