though also on the subject of project hail mary, i'm down with the aro/ace headcanons of grace as much as the next romance repulsed aro, definitely don't stop doing that it's great
but i do have a gripe with that side of the fandom saying grace's entire plot was that he was expendable for not having a partner/children/dog
no!!
eva stratt said that because she is, above all, pragmatic, and also a little mad at him. she needs to get him on that ship by any means necessary, and she knows that he's going to use the excuse of i can't leave people behind (he does try it anyway), so she's getting ahead of it. if you're going to complain about the people you're leaving behind, i'm going to point out that everyone has people they're leaving behind, and most a lot more than you! in fact yáo and ilyukhina are doing this because of the people they left behind, because those people will die if you don't go, so stop using them as a shield to hide behind the real truth, which is you're scared to go on a suicide mission!
but expendable? he's the least expendable person here
the reason in the book that stratt gives him such a short window to decide if he's going or not (when the launch isn't for a couple of days), is that if he says no, they need to contact one of the other scientists who originally volunteered for the mission but were rejected, and train them up in everything they'd need to know. that's the reason everyone else involved in this mission thinks is the case, anyway
but stratt plays a numbers game. it's why they put her in charge, she is willing to put aside her personal feelings and say i will do this thing that kills 40% of the planet if it saves 60%. every single decision that goes into making the hail mary mission possible, is based on what will give them the highest chance of finding a solution, regardless of what i have to do to get them that. and there is no better person for the mission than grace. she knows him, she believes in him, and she knows without a doubt that if they just get grace to train another scientist, that scientist will not be able to solve this problem like grace can. so how can she, in good conscience, after already doing things like blowing up parts of antarctica or paving over the sahara desert to give this mission the best chance of success, refuse to send the best scientist just because he's her friend?
stratt doesn't have anyone to leave behind either. the person she cares about most in this world is ryland grace. to the point where everyone on that ship thinks they're sleeping together and have just mentally filed grace away as the obvious second in command of this mission (all stuff that grace is totally blindsided by when they mention it, like what do you mean??? no i'm just another scientist on this ship like the rest of you and everyone is just like "...buddy.")
if she could send anyone other than grace on this mission, she would. wouldn't matter how many people they were leaving behind, this is about the whole planet, get over it. but she's looked at this situation from every angle, and the only way to ensure the best chance of her species' survival is to kill her best friend
and she wouldn't be eva stratt if she didn't

Hey. Why isn’t the moon landing a national holiday in the US. Isn’t that fucked up? Does anyone else think that’s absurd?
It was a huge milestone of scientific and technological advancement. (Plus, at the time, politically significant). Humanity went to space! We set foot on a celestial body that was not earth for the first time in human history! That’s a big deal! I’ve never thought about it before but now that I have, it’s ridiculous to me that that’s not part of our everyday lives and the public consciousness anymore. Why don’t we have a public holiday and a family barbecue about it. Why have I never seen the original broadcast of the moon landing? It should be all over the news every year!
It’s July 20th. That’s the day of the moon landing. Next year is going to be the 54th anniversary. I’m ordering astronaut shaped cookie cutters on Etsy and I’m going to have a goddamn potluck. You’re all invited.
Hey. Hey. Tumblr. Ides of March ppl. We can do this
Hell yeah moon holiday
Ooh coming up we should celebrate
PITCH: We call it Moon Day, and then every 7 years when it falls on a Monday, that's an even BIGGER deal and we call that Moon Day Monday and go absolutely apeshit about it (the next Moon Day Monday is in 2026 so we have a couple trial runs first)
MOON DAY MOON DAY MOON DAY
moon day is 20th July!!!
Scheduling this a day earlier to remind you all and myself about the Moon Day tomorow!
I scheduled this in 2025 to give you all a week to make Moon Day Monday preparations! I think I will order a little rocket cake or bake some moon phase cookies!
It's coming, cousins. ...This could be as big as March 15th if we made it that way...
Happy Moon Day Monday!!!
HAPPY MOON DAY MONDAY

Overlock Stitch by @clothes_reetzy
Damn, that's useful
Finally a hand sewing tutorial on a hemline that isn't just the ladder stitch! the ladder stitch disappears when you tighten it, but it's not meant for hemlines because it breaks really easily! The overlock stitch is more stable, so it holds much longer, and it won't pucker or warp the fabric!

OH HELL THE FUCK YES
Wdym you hate Stratt? Without her you don’t get a story
Omg I love this piece. Grace the hanging man, content with his life but cannot avoid the changes coming; the ship his noose, the rope that binds him to his fate; the blood red stars beside him, Olesya and Yáo the angels haunting him in the background. Eva Stratt, the one who holds it all on her back, the world is literally on her shoulders, the Petrova line on her neck. She will not falter, cannot afford to move, and yet still she glares at us. Eva challenges us, daring us to ask if we could do better, if we could hold her burden for even a fraction of the time.
Eve, the mother of sin, who held the world in her hands and was cursed for not knowing.
Eva, director of the task force, who now holds the world, and still must curse man to save it.
In the end, it always falls on a woman. I could never hate you Eva Stratt
I love you DVDs, I love you VHS Tapes, I love you Cassettes, I love you Records, I love you CDs, I love you Books, I love you Journals
stratt and grace and the rest of the phm science team running on 4 cumulative hours of sleep at an unscheduled conference. dimitri and lokken are trying to explain a new complication in the hail mary's fueling system and the resources necessary to iron it out but they keep getting interrupted by government officials butting in until grace (who doesn't even look up from his laptop and checked out of the conversation two days ago) snaps "we raise our hands to speak"
complete silence for like 3 seconds. the french prime minister sheepishly raises his hand and stratt smiles for the first time that week (grace buries his entire head behind his laptop screen for wont of a better option, like jumping straight into the sea)
They wear suits, but they don't even know basic etiquette.
Based on @cowardsexual 's post of a very sleepy phm science team and Grace's teacher instincts
this is fucking killing me bro. computah, show me more hot hockey firefighters whaling on cops
thing I am proud of: when the doctor started going on a weird rant about long covid not being real I paused and listened to his nonsense for a bit and then very calmly said, in a polite and curious tone, "you don't believe in post-viral illness?" and he like. stammered a bunch and was like OH WELL I'M NOT SAYING -- I DON'T...I just think ..! and backpedaled awkwardly while I just sat there like :3c interesting :3c thank you so much for clarifying your stance on this :3c
an important skill for chronically ill people to develop is the ability to treat the doctor as though they are simply a person you are interviewing to find out how much they know about your condition.
Holy shit op this is LITERALLY in the book 'Never Split The Difference: Negotiating as if Your Life Depends On It'. Written by a guy who did hostage negotiation and then tried doing business negotiation, and mopped the floor with industry experts.
I'm fortunate enough to have a primary care doctor who knows about hEDS, but it's occurring to me that the skills in this book could be medically life changing for chronically ill folks of all kinds. Like. Literally a matter of life and death, especially for BIPOC and/or fat and/or young people who are having their issues dismissed.
HMMM interesting!! will have to check this out
