SotF tribute/AU thoughts

So ever since reading SotF on AO3 I've been having an idea that I got reminded of by a mutual's post about vaderluke that I stumbled on just moments ago. I'm thinking an alternate timeline where Anakin doesn't go to jail, but Padmé still dies, so he has to step up as Luke's father single-handedly.

At first it's pretty plainly Anakin being obsessed with his son, incredibly attached to him and doting on baby Luke, being a decent father essentially, if not even better. Basically disproving every preexisting notion anyone might have of him being unfitting to care for and raise a kid, or so it looks like in the beginning.

And it really, really doesn't stop being that way, it just... as Luke grows, bit by bit, Anakin gets more and more of this anxiety of slowly losing Luke to the world. Perhaps it's him projecting his own youth on his son, raw attraction of a man who has lost all fucks to give or maybe it's an errant kind of love that's true but counterproductive, either way, the end result is Anakin subtly working to raise Luke into a total daddy's boy in several ways, including the deeply inappropriate and disturbing ones.

The delicious mental gymnastics to justify what he's doing in terms of his son's upbringing, and most importantly, the things he isn't doing—like discouraging excessive physical contact, kisses on the mouth, cuddling naked, so on and so forth. The possessiveness intricately woven into valuable life lessons and relational skills, because there's no way Anakin is going to mess it all up by going about it brutishly. Ohh no, never.

Luke will grow up to absolutely adore his daddy. Because his daddy is the best, most smartest, strongest and prettiest in the whole wide world. Anyone who says otherwise knows nothing about anything.

And it's very key that Anakin is not forcing anything on Luke; he's merely presenting himself as the ultimate best choice. For any kind of intimacy really, be it emotional or physical.

Towards Luke's adulthood, pretty much nothing can come between them, partly because Anakin won't let it happen, but also because Luke vehemently resists and rejects anything that'd separate them ever since his dad really starts Fooling around with him, capital F style.

So funny when anyone who knows Luke easily sees him as very open to experiences, a gentle-hearted kind of guy who gets along with just about anyone, a really hard to hate dude, easy to excite, stuff like that.

But when it comes to anything that'd have him away from his father for more than a week it's a hard no with no explanations. No elaboration. Just a bright smile and a few bats of those golden lashes and a change of subject.

Anyone saying weird shit about Luke's dad will be either condescended to and pitied as if they were off their rockers, or discreetly isolated and kicked out of Luke's circles. He's a single dad and a young widower for crying out loud, he's doing his best! Gee, let him live. What's it to you if he hugs his son like that in public, huh?
