You just squeezed all our hearts and kept us captivated to the very end. This story was definitely harder for me to read in terms of content, because it felt so realistically abusive and heartbreaking. But again, you have handled it all so amazingly. All I could think about was Obi-Wan drinking and then going over at Bail, completely drunk and talking about how he "should've listened to you. You were right. Worse, I wish you were right and this didn't happen" except Leia's listening in and both anger and guilt fill her because how did she not see it? Just how?

And just... Leia and Han will spend the rest of their life always thinking about him, and what they consider were their mistakes, looking for Luke and just for a way to help him now even if they know that they can hardly help someone who doesn't want that help (but that's the thing right? Luke did want their help but by the time they could give it to him it was far too late.)

Admittedly, thinking about what happened to Obi-Wan and Leia and Han after the fic is one of the hardest things about this ending. But that’s what I like about writing tragedies that end so openly: if that’s what you imagined happened afterwards, then that’s what happened! There’s nothing canonical to suggest those things couldn’t happen, so if you decide that Luke pushes Anakin from their penthouse balcony and runs back to his real family, then that can be the true ending to you.

I know some people find that unsatisfying, or exhausting, but I’ve always been a sucker for fics that light that spark to your imagination and let it blaze. Especially after a such a heavy fic, for me personally, it’s always more of a comfort to know that things could still work out — in another time, another story.

To be honest, there is no way in hell I can believe that Anakin, even an AU version of him, is smart/cunning enough to pull off a plan with that many moving parts, because Anakin's always kind of not been That Guy-- it sort of seems like a fundamental part of his character. But I totally CAN totally believe this is a universe where he simply got a lot of luck and for once it swung in his favor instead of everything going to shit. (Luke seems like he's the one who got the shit end of the luck stick in this one, lol.)

This has been an interesting story to follow, because the end has felt tragic and inevitable. We knew from the start that the monster was going to win. I didn't enjoy it, but I enjoyed watching the construction of it, if that makes sense? There's just something that much more tragic about Luke's shitty fate being tied to him being a good person, and his love and kindness being turned and used against him. It makes me ache for him and Obi Wan and Leia and Han and Bail and everyone else in his life that Anakin deliberately took Luke away from.

I'll console myself by thinking of hopeful future fantasies for Luke (and Anakin accidentally getting compacted to death by a garbage truck or something), and also being so fucking jazzed for the Mando foundling story, Congrats on finishing!

I mean, both Anakin during TCW and Vader during the OT are renowned for being brilliant tacticians (and exceptionally brutal). As my friend @hallowest likes to say, Anakin is "high INT, low WIS." He's canonically extremely intelligent — but only when he wants to be. Usually he's perfectly happy to rely on brute strength, but when he needs to be cunning, when he needs to be tactical, that is in no way a skill he lacks.

Regardless, I'm glad you enjoyed watching the tragedy fall into place, even if the ending was more bitter than sweet. Luke and Obi-Wan came out of this on the losing side precisely because of their love of Anakin, and it's emotionally exhausting, because without that unconditional love his entire plan goes to shit, and he knows that. Worse: Luke knows that! He knows that he is directly responsible for his father’s victory, and even then, he can’t bring himself to thwart it.

Rest assured that, while the villain may have won in SotF, mando foundling AU will have a much fluffier (albeit still quite trashy) arc and outcome. I’m so glad you’re looking forward to it, and thank you for taking the time to read SotF, as harrowing as it was at times! ♥️

THAT UPDATE!! i’m so sad for luke and obi-wan my god… also obviously i figured that that was where anakin was going/planning once you said he wasn’t fighting back but i’m glad that luke at least managed to talk him down from that. out of curiosity, is it that anakin knows All the cops in town from working for sidious or was there just something anakin knew regarding who was on shift etc? and did luke immediately lie about what was happening because he’s afraid of anakin or is he just that stockholmed that his instinct is to protect him?

oh also sidenote but am i misremembering or did sotf use to have a happy ending tag on it? 😭 bc i dont know if i can see that being the case at this point but i feel like i remember it having it at one point..

I think Palpatine has cops on his payroll all over the place — but especially in a town where his favoritest henchman was just living in. Anakin probably set the whole thing up, but I like to leave some of the more finicky details to the imagination. Could all just be a happy coincidence that Piett and Ozzel responded to that call. Maybe this was just Luke’s fate.

As for why Luke lied… that’s really up to interpretation. Fear played a part, sure. Humiliation, definitely. Recognizing that something wasn’t right with these cops and that justice wasn’t likely to be served, even if only on a subconscious level. And I think Luke wants to stay with his dad, at least to some degree. Maybe he’s not in love with him but he does love him; he does want this person in his life, for better or worse, even if this is the only way he can have him.

And there’s shame at play, too, because regardless of why, of natural bodily reactions to things, Luke feels deeply self-conscious of the fact that he did physically enjoy the shit his father did to him. He doesn’t want Obi-Wan to know that, even if he knows everything else. He doesn’t want that dark secret to come to light.

SotF did not have a happy ending tag, since this is very much a, “the villain wins” kind of story. Might add the Hurt No Comfort tag when I post the epilogue, but even that is kind of subjective.

Tuesday After Noon

He wondered if he’d developed some sort of sixth sense that shrieked an alarm when his father was coming. It felt like an impending thunderstorm, a change in the atmosphere, like something beautiful and terrible was crawling across his skin and burrowing into his body.

Or it could just be the sound of the private elevator rising to the penthouse.

Whatever the reason, Luke’s breathing quickened. He froze in the kitchen, pushing the washed plates aside, waiting and clenching his fists with anticipation. It was mid-afternoon, too early for his father to leave his office, especially after he’d come by at lunchtime as usual, checking to ensure that Luke was eating and having a light meal himself. When he’d left after bestowing a hard, lingering kiss that was a promise for later, Luke had assumed Anakin wouldn’t be back until evening when he would spend an hour or two on paperwork in his home office. Sometimes Luke sat on his lap, watching the numbers his dad manipulated on the computer screen. Sometimes he sat on his dick, pelvis spasming as he clenched his muscles around the base of the big cock inside him. Sometimes Daddy allowed that and thrust hard. Sometimes Daddy bit Luke’s neck to reproach him.

When his daddy didn’t stop him, he slid down the zipper and carefully pushed aside the crotch of the tailored pants. I'm so glad you're enjoying them! Tbh I'm so hyperfixated on this AU right now & am having the most fun writing for it. I promise absolutely nothing, but I feel like there will be more.

In the interim, to answer your question, here are some thoughts I've had... I'm very much conceiving this as darkfic, with an Anakin just as (if not more) sinister and possessive as SotF Anakin. @starboundanon please chime in if there's anything you want to add!

Anakin wants to control every aspect of Padmé and Luke's interactions. He wants to play Happy Dollhouse Family, and he knows it would work if everyone would just listen to him

Padmé is swimming in guilt (idk why she was gone for so long; I'm sure she had an excellent reason, but she's still feeling so guilty about it) that Anakin is absolutely exploiting, while pretending to help. She's afraid to overstep (what she has been told are) Luke's boundaries, but she so desperately wants to know her son. So she keeps trying to reach out to him, but she also holds herself back, seeming withdrawn to Luke.

Luke's anxiety is through the roof. He does want to know his mom, but he recognizes the danger signs in his Daddy's behavior, and he's afraid to mess up and bring that anger down on all of them. So he also holds back, and Padmé perceives that he's rejecting her. Which she takes as evidence that Anakin was right, and Luke's still so hurt/shy! Which feeds into her guilt more, etc.

Luke feels obligation to his mother, and is trying his best to protect her, the only way he knows how (placate Daddy)

Anakin is gaslighting the shit out of everyone. If at any point Luke & Padmé seem to be making progress, he sabotages it right away. But of course he's just ~protecting~ them, he just doesn't want anyone to get hurt...

Anakin is having a blast playing with Luke, using an unwitting Padmé to tease him, slipping into his room at night - not predictably; he keeps Luke guessing, never sure when his Daddy will appear - fucking him tenderly and possessively and brutally depending on his mood, leaving marks just out sight, where Luke has to work to keep them covered. Luke is constantly on edge, hating that they're back to sneaking around, but perversely glad for his Daddy's attention.

Padmé's starting to pick up on the fact that there's something not quite right about Anakin/Luke's relationship... she doesn't notice the sexual stuff, I don't think, at least not explicitly, but she definitely sees how possessive Anakin is of Luke's attention, how controlling he is, and how fixated Luke is on his father.

Padmé starts wondering if she really belongs here, if she's even wanted... or loved.

There'll have to be a big confrontation at some point, everyone is so tense and miserable... but that's spoilers!

Yessss to all of this.

The next time Padmé sneaks off from to ask Luke to help her pick out living room curtains or what to have for supper, Luke backs away like she’s a guy with a gun, makes some excuse before fleeing. Anakin comes home to find his wife in tears, holds her when she tells him that she doesn’t know if Luke will ever forgive her, promises that he will, he’ll come around, of course he loves his mama. And all the while he’s smiling, cheek resting on top of her head, where she can’t see it. “Just give him space, Padmé. He’ll come around.”

Anakin fucks Luke so good that night. A little rough, because he’s so pleased, so proud, so happy his baby boy has been behaving. Fucks him and whispers filthy words of praise that make him keen, then scolds him for being too loud, “Shhh, baby. You don’t want mommy to hear.”

Anakin, right in front of Padmé, just to be a hurtful dick and hammer home the fact that Luke "can't bear" to be touched by her, holds him and kisses Luke’s forehead. He's the only one allowed to do that, the only one Luke "trusts." It cuts like a knife in Padmé's heart, but she has to pretend it doesn't.

Anakin encourages Luke to be chatty with Padmé when they’re all together, like Trash said — but the line between “chatty” and what Anakin would consider to be “inappropriate” is so fucking thin and hard to find. Luke has no idea what he can and can’t say, which topics are safe, how much emotion/eagerness is TOO much, etc.

Anakin takes pity on the poor boy at some point, after listening to the most stunted conversation between him and his mother, Luke’s one-word answers to every question, yes ma’am and no ma’am like he’s being questioned by police. “Luke, why don’t you tell your mom about the trip we took to Bespin last month?” helping him open up, set the topic, tell him that it’s safe.

Anakin blows his lid because Luke was having a little too much fun talking to mama. Gets him over his knee to discipline him for it later, and Luke sobs and confesses that he couldn’t help it, it was the first time anyone’s ever answered his questions about what his dad was like before prison, the first time anyone’s actually WANTED to tell him that, the truth. Blushes and says that he just… he just liked the way mom told those stories. Liked the softness of her voice, when she talked about getting meeting him, falling in love with him, marrying him. How dreamy happy he sounded.

Anakin can't stay mad at that.

Oh, so it's like that, is it? Some more detailed headcanons, then...

Anakin hasn't touched Padmé this entire time. The way he's been explaining away his sudden lack of interest in her is by stabbing her right in the guilt. "You left, Padmé. I'm so glad you're back, but I'm still processing that, I need time." True, Anakin was also gone, but he was in *jail*, that wasn't his *fault*. She left on *purpose*, and now he's traumatized, and so is Luke, so of *course* they're clinging to each other a little too tightly.

Luke doesn't know any of that, though. And at some point, he's going to blurt out all his insecurities, and Daddy will hold him and rock him and reassure him that Mommy really does love you, Luke, she just shows it differently. And of *course* she won't come between them, Daddy will always love his baby the most, why is his silly little boy even worrying about this?

After one of Anakin's possessive "remember who you belong to" fucks, Luke's left covered in hidden lovebites and has the tiniest hint of a limp that he has to work to conceal. And at breakfast that morning Anakin's fucking *hovering* over him when they're all together, fatherly touches that stop *just* before they've lingered too long, playing innocent while he rubs it in Padmé's face that Luke lets *daddy* touch him, but not mama. He's marking his territory, but claims innocence, he's just "comforting" Luke so he'll calm down and stay around Padmé longer. He's just trying to help, honest. He's Luke's safe person, Padmé! That isn't his fault. He's just taking care of his son like a good father would
