Maria Remedios del Valle

Considered to be the mother of the Argentine nation, Maria Remedios del calle was an afroargentine militar, member of the “Niñas de Ayohuma” who assisted Manuel Belgrano’s defeated army in the Ayohuma Battle. She also participated during the English Invasions and fought in the Northern Army during the Argentine independence wars which allowed her to get the title of captain and then of Sargent of the army.

She died in poverty since nobody wanted to acknowledge she had actually fought as a high ranking officer in the independence wars.

In her honor, on November the 8th, Argentina commemorates the National Day for Afroargentine Culture
