The discussions regarding if Xena and Gabrielle were dating/lovers/married/queer is still unnecessarily going on 27 years later. So we made a video compilation including tons of clips in which the cast and crew of Xena: Warrior Princess talk about how their romance was planned from the start and how they had to navigate the networks' restrictions.
"Gay. Gay. Definitely." -Lucy Lawless
"Many of my friends who are a lesbian but were denied that identification and fought themselves and then finally came out and liberated themselves. And I remember thinking to myself... and that's going to be Gabrielle." -Steven L. Sears
"I don't have any interest in saying theyโre heterosexuals. Thatโs just bullsh*t and no fun either." -Liz Friedman
Liz Friedman, one of our writers and producers she is a gay woman and totally knew. Rob, the man who would later become my husband totally knew. And R.J. Stewart the headwriter and showrunner, he absolutely knew. So I guess that it was just that the studio at that time might have shied away from it. So the reason to keep it quiet was probably more about that than keeping it from us. -Lucy Lawless
How do you personally feel about people still denying their relationship?
