T MAGAZINE - THE DIARY OF MRS. TEPENDRIS
COMPLICATED COATS AND CABINETS OF CURIOSITIES AT PARIS COUTURE
ILLUSTRATIONS By KONSTANTIN KAKANIAS
or the couture shows this season, T sent Mrs. Tependris, the high-society doyenne who is the fictional alter ego of the artist and T contributing editor Konstantin Kakanias, to Paris. “She hadn’t been for years,” Kakanias said. “Things have changed, so she was a bit confused when she arrived.” But she got her bearings soon enough and soaked up the weeklong high-fashion parade. Here, Kakanias shares some of the things that his heroine saw and did.
Meeting Gareth Pugh and Michele Lamy at the airport (Sunday, July 30, afternoon)
“It was extremely hot. I almost collapsed.”
“When Donatella Versace came out, what she was wearing was so tight, she couldn’t bend a leg! So there was a bodyguard who took her, like an inflatable doll.”
“Valli had the soul of couture. It was very Rome. Mrs. Tependris thinks she’s Cleopatra. She says ‘Antony, don’t come back.’ He dies outside.
“The hair on all the girls was funny, like sprayed leopard, to match the leopard-print collection.”
Mrs. Tependris went to the salon for an appointment. This coat is so complicated to wear. It makes her feel that life is complicated.”

WHO WHAT WEAR
Celine's Phoebe Philo is partially responsible for the revival, thanks to the fur-trimmed versions she designed for the French fashion brand's S/S 13 collection, but we've also noticed a smattering of celebs (like Ashley Olsen) and street muses wearing the original, old-school sandals too. Ironic (their wide, clunky design feels practically analog), understated (there's something appealing about their minimalist design), and decidedly relaxed (nothing says "laid-back" like a slip-on), Birkenstocks are above all practical, a concept we can certainly get behind during this long, hot summer.

ITG - FAST, LOOSE AND GLOSSY
The 'concept,' if you can call it that, is to first and foremost keep your skin clean and fresh, highlighting everywhere the sun would naturally hit (we used Burberry Fresh Glow) before playing around with the eyes. For those suckers, all you’ll need is a brown liner pencil (really, whatever you’ve got; we used CoverGirl Brow and Eye Makers inSoft Brown) and something to shine it up (we used a super-light dab of Eight Hour Cream). Line under the eye, and along the upper lash line, add some gloss, and smudge it around with your finger. Keep adding liner and smudging it with your now-glossy finger until you reach your desired tint and opacity (and smudge-circumference). It should look a little wet, a little undone, and a whole lot of sexy. The point of this eye is that it can live and move with you and get a little weird (e.g., settle into the crease, shift around during the day); it’s about fast, strategic smudging, much like how you would apply a potted lip balm with your finger. Top it all off with a few grazes of black mascara on your lashes (we went with YSL Shocking Volume Effet in Black Bronze) and you’re good to go. Oh, and an aside: eschew the brown pencil and try a complimentary color to your eye (a burgundy/purple pencil works nicely with green and brown eyes; a warmer, orange-tinged brown hue for blue eyes, and so on). Then, watch those babies snap/crackle/pop.
