priam’s death scene in aeneid 2 gets me every time because it’s about achilles but priam knew achilles better than neoptolemus, his own son! neoptolemus never knew his father but priam faced achilles across the battle field for ten years and then across a body when both were at their most vulnerable! neoptolemus thinks that to be like achilles is to kill, and priam tries to tell him that to be like achilles is to have mercy on a father who’s lost his son, but neoptolemus won’t listen! neoptolemus tries to match achilles in his fury (and knows he’ll fail) but priam tries to tell him that achilles himself knew that mercy was the better part of him!
