Yes. Yes, they should. And they should also learn the difference between cultural appropriation and flat-out racism.

people really should learn the difference between cultural appropriation and cultural exchange
Yes. Yes, they should. And they should also learn the difference between cultural appropriation and flat-out racism.
Imitation might be the sincerest form of flattery or just another way of causing offense.
“While you may mean well by calling out your French-Canadian friend for donning a sombrero on Cinco de Mayo, if you yourself are not Mexican, you may end up misrepresenting a culture that's not your own. It's best to avoid assumptions and allow marginalized peoples to speak for themselves...“
Ever since the Lion of Judah, House of Rastafari became recognized as a “church” earlier this year, they have certainly been causing a stir in the Madison community. Founder Jesse Schworck has claimed the legal right to sell marijuana as a sacrament -- though he would say he only gives it away fo
“But some in the community have understandably wondered how authentic they truly are and have accused them of appropriating Black culture while also exercising white privilege, running a cannabis operation out in the open without being arrested while many people of color sit in jail for the same offense.“ This is a pretty blatant case of cultural appropriation, for fuck’s sake. Also, racism. He’s like the next Rachel Dolezal or something. “I don’t really see myself as having an accent but a lot of people apparently have told me over my life that when they talked to me on a phone or something, they think that I’m black or something,” he told Madison365. “So whatever they’re hearing is just me. Nobody else can talk like this. No one else can do what I do because it’s just me. It comes natural for me because this is my life.”
“Nobody else”, eh? This is one of those times when “stealing culture” starts to feel like appropriate terminology. Go get ‘em, Tumblr. So fuckin’ gross.
White Sage
White Sage is not listed as endangered or even threatened by either the state or federal government. It is NOT endangered, however due to development its natural habitat is on the decline.
If you are still concerned ask the store you buy it from who their provider is. A quick google search will reveal whether they harvest wild or from sustainable nurseries.
Sustainable nurseries are better for the plant because not only is the wild population left untouched, supporting nurseries alows many of them to do conservative work to help the plant population.
WHITE Sage is often considered sacred to Native American populations, so before using white Sage consider doing some research and using at your own discretion.
Other types of Sage are still ok. Sage is not unique to North America it was commonly found it witchcraft practices around the world, so do some research.
White Sage nurseries are often owned and operated by the Native Americans the plant is sacred to. Buying directly from them benefits their business, so consider buying from them.
White sage has actual, demonstrated abilities to purify the air in your house. It’s good for you to burn it. Just don’t be any kind of dick about it, like pretending you’re doing some kind of Native American spiritual practice when you’re not NA, and just use it for the health/environmental benefits. It’s much better to use a natural product like burning sage than it is to use some shitty chemical product to clean the air or repel insects. "Medicinal smoke can completely eliminate diverse plant and human pathogenic bacteria of the air within confined space.“
Since joining Tumblr, I’ve met a lot of young queer people. Look, I’m a bisexual man in a gay relationship, and I’m approaching 30. I was still a kid when Matthew Shepard’s story was being covered on the news. I remember thinking, “I better keep my mouth shut about these feelings I’m having.”
And then I met Dominic when I was 12, and people could see how in love we were. And we got the shit beat out of us. The year I met him, some kids in the grade above me held me down against the bleachers in our gym and stomped on my hand until my fingers broke. Instead of sending me to the nurse, the teacher sent me to the assistant principal to explain the situation. She asked why the kids had beat me up. I said, “They were calling me gay.”
Her response was, “Well, are you?”
My, “I don’t know,” earned a call to my parents, and I was outed. Efforts were made to keep me from seeing Dom. Throughout high school, Dom’s stepmother intensified these efforts. He slept in the basement of the house. Although he was an incredibly talented student, he was prohibited from participating in any extracurriculars. He suffered a lot of physical abuse during those years.
The day he turned 18, he packed up everything he had and walked to my house, and we’ve lived together ever since. Things are better, but they’re not perfect. I’ve had trucks pull up next to me at stoplights and, seeing the pride sticker on my car, through old drinks and garbage into my window. I no longer speak to my dad’s side of the family. I haven’t been to see them for Christmas or Thanksgiving in years. One of my uncles had cornered me at Thanksgiving when I was 17 and said, “I’m not going to judge you, but I’d be happy to break your neck so God can do the judging a little sooner.”
I joined a support group for trans and intersex people. When I joined, 40 people attended regularly. Within the year, the group was half the size it had been. Some couldn’t make it anymore, because they were staying at the shelter, where their stay hinged on them agreeing to instead to attend homophobic sermons. Some were put in correctional therapy. Five of them died. Three of those, I didn’t know, but I knew Alex, the 19 year old who was fag-dragged in Kentucky and died a day later in the hospital, and I knew Stephanie, who went home to Alabama to care for her mom in hospice and was beaten to death with a baseball bat by her mom’s boyfriend.
Tumblr is not reality. The dynamic here does not reflect the dynamic out there. Here’s the part where I finally make a point, and it might be extremely unpopular - but guys, value your allies. Value each other. We are met with enough hate in our daily lives to enter an online safe-space and meet more hate from our own, over petty things. Don’t go after one another over every little thing you find problematic.
Learn to see nuance. Maybe the word “queer” bothers you, and you see a gay man using it as an umbrella term. Maybe someone called a trans man a trans woman because they’re confused about terminology, but the post where they did it was voicing support for the trans community. Maybe someone is just asking a question, wanting to learn more. Stop. Attacking. These. People.
Allies are being driven away. Members of our own community are being ostracized. Others are feeling nervous and estranged, and it’s largely because of places like Tumblr, where the social justice movement is quickly becoming violent and radical. I am begging you, stop nitpicking “problematic” things and start directing your efforts to create real change. When it comes to comes to your allies, forget the “social justice warrior” mentality and put down your torch. Educate calmly. Be respectful. Be understanding. Be forgiving. And I’m certainly not saying that your anger doesn’t have a good place - when you are met with bigots on the street, congress members who want to pass hateful laws, violent protesters, abusive parents, prejudiced teachers, that is when you need to be a warrior. That’s when it counts. In the real world. When you have the opportunity to protect people from real harm. Attacking your would-be allies via anonymous asks is just going to lose us ground in the long run. And we don’t have time for that, not when trans women of color are being murdered every day, not when states are still fighting against marriage equality, not when there are politicians in office who believe that trans people are possessed by demons, not when we’ve just lost 50 brothers and sisters to one gunman, not when the media won’t even admit that the attack was homophobic.
Please step back. Look at the big picture. Look at where we are, globally. Don’t just log on to your safe space and attack your allies over small missteps. That’s like washing the dishes in a house that’s on fire, kids. Let’s fight on the battlefield, and when we come home to each other, let’s just focus on bandaging up our wounds so we can go out and win the war.
Signal boost to this unbelievably important message.
I love the shit you can find when shopping!!
this is bullshit.
No. Fuck. This.
Why do white people think our hair is such a fucking joke? What is so fucking hilarious about the texture of our hair and the concept of ‘the afro’? Why are people always trying to equate our hair with things that are non-human? My hair is not a fucking Brillo pad. And If you’re unaware that this is a common insult used toward Black folks, specifically Black folks with natural hair, you should at least be able to grasp the idea that no one wants their hair compared to an object used to scrape food off of dirty dishes. It’s never going to be okay for you to use a likeness of a Black person as a fucking cleaning utensil. Never.
And if you don’t already know why that shit is ridiculous and offensive, I don’t want anything to do with you.
Jesus fucking Christ, could this be any more tacky? Racist bullshit of the first water.

“ALDI’S SQUARE SAUSAGE SPARKS ‘CULTURAL APPROPRIATION’ OUTRAGE ON SOCIAL MEDIA AMONG SCOTS“
What isn’t cultural appropration:
• Trying/eating/making a culture’s food • Listening to that culture’s music • Watching that culture’s movies • Reading that culture’s books • Appreciating that culture’s art • Wearing that culture’s clothing IF in a setting where that culture is…
To which I’d add:
Learning another language
Visiting another place
Being inspired by any of the above to make your own versions, as long as you do it respectfully, it’s not a culturally-restricted thing (like native headdresses which are never ok) and give credit where credit is due
Cultural Appropriation in the Media #4 - How do we normalize appropriation in our everyday lives?
In the widely popular HBO show, Game of Thrones, the character Sansa comes from the northern part of Westeros called Winterfell. As with all the cultures in Game of Thrones, each has heir own dress, food, typical clothing, and even hairstyles.
But when Sansa begins to live in the southern King’s Landing, she changes her hair to how one typically of the south.
Except Sansa is not of the South. She has no ties to the south, and is little more than a long-staying guest there. Therefore, she has no right to wear the styles of actual southern women.
This is how in many little ways, cultural appropriation has been normalized in our every day lives.
Oh, this horseshit again. It’s like the white walkers - keeps coming back, almost impossible to kill. This is not an example of cultural appropriation. This doesn’t “normalize” a goddamned thing, except for people making really stupid, delusional claims on the internet. Fight me. https://appropriate-this-bitches.tumblr.com/post/65764725815/culturalappropriation-in-media-cultural
never vibed with a comment more tbh
just when i thought i had seen it all on etsy, i found this mess, who describes himself as the following:
I am a maker of authentic Native American Crafts, all work is either hand cut, weaved, sewn, bound etc. by myself. Having studied the Native American culture i play and now teach to others the way of the Flute. I also teach African Djembe here in Glastonbury England.
tbh i haven’t been this mad about cultural appropriation in a very long time. i would encourage those with the time, energy, and inclination to let him know he’s a racist douche and report him. check out what he sells:
OMFG. Report this one.
“authentic native american crafts” made by a white dummy in england.
I’m not sure if the UK has similar laws, but in the US, it is illegal to represent things as being made by Native Americans when they are not. https://www.doi.gov/iacb/act
The law covers all Indian and Indian-style traditional and contemporary arts and crafts produced after 1935. The Act broadly applies to the marketing of arts and crafts by any person in the United States. Some traditional items frequently copied by non-Indians include Indian-style jewelry, pottery, baskets, carved stone fetishes, woven rugs, kachina dolls, and clothing.
All products must be marketed truthfully regarding the Indian heritage and tribal affiliation of the producers, so as not to mislead the consumer. It is illegal to market an art or craft item using the name of a tribe if a member, or certified Indian artisan, of that tribe did not actually create the art or craft item.
Etsy should shut that shit down, since they’re in the US and this jackass is shipping his appropriative bullshit to the states. It may actually be a crime for him to be shipping his fake shit into the US.
I have to begin by saying that the moment that I saw this pic I felt very offended, while it was being criticized in the website Brown Eyed Amazon I don’t understand why someone would take the time to create such thing. Mexican Americans have faced a long history of racial discrimination, scapegoating, and backlash from white Americans since the inception of Mexican immigration to the United States – a sentiment that continues to feed racial tensions to this day thus creating a rhetoric of hate and the perpetuation of stereotypes such as this one, making Dora a Latino television character into a Pregnant woman who has beer and has a welfare check on her backpack is culturally appropriating Latino women.
This is not cultural appropriation, unless one somehow believes that the culture of Latina women involves welfare, beer, and smoking while pregnant. This is straight-up RACISM. It’s stereotyping. It’s GROSS. And seriously, I’m with the OP on questioning why someone would spend their time expressing this kind of contempt and hatred.
On the website for Refinery 29 the number one new media brand, they create a an article on Dolce and Gabbana In their Spring 2013 collection, DOLCE AND GABBANA used blackamoor earrings in their runway. The face of these earrings was Aunt Jemima. They received several criticisms for this and they sparked controversy of cultural appropriation.
This is not cultural appropriation. This is straight up racism. Not to mention GROSS.
Okay so I’ve been hearing a lot recently that flower crowns count as cultural appropriation, so I’m going to stop wearing them just in case, but does anyone know of any resources to explain this in more detail?
They appropriate Hawaiian culture.
NO they fucking don’t. Look at all this European art that has abso-fucking-lutely nothing to do with Hawaiian culture. Are you a troll blog? Ever hear of Poland? http://the-toast.net/2016/01/19/miserable-looking-women-wearing-flower-crowns-in-western-art-history/
This is my second tattoo. It was done by Allie Sider at Code of Conduct in Chicago, Illinois. His work is seriously incredible and he did a fantastic job.
The hand of fatima is a sign of protection and good luck. I travled to Morocco last summer and it really changed my view on life. This symbol is a large part of their culture. So, I wanted to commemorate my trip with this tattoo.
Oh for god’s sake.
*sigh*
The Hamsa was originally a symbol of the goddess Tanit, who was revered throughout the Mediterranean and north coast of Africa. Her temples have been found as far north as Sicily/Italy*, which is something I found out after being told that my Hamsa earrings were “cultural appropriation”. In any event, it’s not a restricted symbol. It is used by several different cultures. It’s ok to respectfully wear, use, and enjoy. If you think “cultural appropriation” means “white-looking people doing something that you think isn’t European”, well, maybe do some fucking homework. *Schroedinger’s POC
