I was resolved to use color for the 2-hour pose today!

Felt good about:

Sketched out the form quickly and efficiently today :) Even successfully revised the figure to exaggerate the gesture a bit further.

Got the proper amount of contrast I wanted on the upper back/shoulders 😍

Still struggling with:

Had a real hard time finding a not-terrible color palette. In the end I got something that worked well enough for lighting & contrast, but could be much better when it comes to hue variation and an appealing skin tone.

Need to pay more attention to time management. This piece would look more "actually finished" if I'd had more time to treat the background surrounding the figure.

Felt good about:

Making use of 3D forms to get a more accurate and gestural drawing 😎

Still struggling with:

Still didn't do the best at using shading to emphasize the right parts of the picture, instead of just messily copying lights/shadows I see

I think I should try using color next time, skin tone is still something I need to work on 😌

i love oot zelda. she's haunted by prophecies and visions. she's haunted by what she's done, the rash actions of a child done in earnest. the scheme of a child who is not listened to, made in secrecy. and while i know it was canonically done for security, i think its also the trauma that causes her to cast aside her own face, her own self, to take on a new one.

we all talk about how link had his childhood ripped from him, but the truth is that zelda never got to grow up either. sheik did, in her stead. the sheikah poet, who can distance himself behind rhyme and harp chords. the one who can atone for the innocent mistakes of that haunted child in his memory.

On Wednesdays the life drawing sessions do 2-hour poses yay! I can't make it every single week but it's great that it's available when I'm able.

Felt good about:

The front leg! I feel like I gave it the amount of contrast & focus I intended

Had time to properly draw the face this time

Still struggling with:

I still need to get better at intentionally reducing the details/contrast on the areas that shouldn't be focused. Like, the back leg I feel was successful for that treatment, but I should've put a lighter touch on the upper torso so that the front arm could pop more.

Should've exaggerated the pose to be more expressive, but at least it was accurate enough (and I properly fit the whole figure on the paper... barely)

Tried to incorporate some brush marker this week. They're useful but I don't think I've made the best of them yet... we'll see.

Felt good about:

Got in some good feet practice, another one of my weaknesses

Tried to rein in leg lengths/proportions a bit better

Still struggling with:

Didn't spend any time on heads/faces. Wonder if I should dedicate a session to that sometime. Maybe if we get a model who doesn't have a big ol beard obscuring things

Lines were really uncertain and inaccurate this time. Maybe I needed more sleep

Same model as last week. My seat happened to get a lot of back views this round, so I tried to do more studying of the back muscles which is a weakness of mine. Still don't understand the large shapes well enough 😓

Felt good about:

Had an easier time capturing the poses

Tried to exaggerate for more expressive gestures

Paid a bit more attention to perspective

Still struggling with:

Leaving enough room for legs & feet/resisting the urge to draw legs a bazillion miles long

Shading - need to define large areas of shadow more cohesively, instead of patchy blocks. I should get some charcoal sticks, maybe some non-white paper.

(15 min) Ugh this one was a disaster. I made the rookie mistake of getting caught up on details before laying out the full figure to make sure it was sufficiently proportional/cohesive. At least I redeemed myself with the next pose (the last pic up top, above the cut)

On Monday I finally got my junk together and made it to the weekly life drawing sessions at the local gallery :) Not much in the way of surprises - it was very much like the sessions I took in college, a nice environment. I'll try to make it a regular habit from here on.

(The above are all 15-minute poses so they're more presentable drawings. I'll throw the rest under a cut cuz they're not impressive 😅 Just posting them for posterity so I can compare progression.)
