I wish we could live in a world where sexuality and gender doesn’t even matter and we are just these beings that love and identify with anything.

We’ll occasionally have, like, a conversation with our adequately paid cashier and they’ll see our grayromantic, trans, non-binary, and asexual pins and they’ll be like, “Oh my god I just had my surgery last week! My chest kinda hurts, but the lotion the doctor gave me helps a lot!”

And you’ll leave feeling happy instead of worrying whether or not they have enough food to eat at home, because healthcare will cover top and bottom surgeries.

But nobody cares about who you love or how you look. We just walk around loving and living how we want, and our identities are just so that people who are struggling can find places where they belong, not to marginalize and pick at each other.

It’s no longer taboo to be yourself.

So I have this question that hasn’t been getting out of my head, so I figured I’m just going to ramble here.

What’s the difference between platonic and romantic attraction?

I know this should sound super obvious to some of you. But think about it, what the absolute hell is the difference?

I mean, all of you guys seem to keep praising romantic attraction and having partners in a romantic sense, But I feel like some of you guys don’t even know the difference, or care to acknowledge that there may be no difference to speak of-

I know I should be the last person asking this considering I have over 10 S/OC’s but-

It seems really silly To me that there’s a difference between the two. Because wouldn’t you do everything with a friend that you would do to a romantic partner? Do you know- kissing (forehead/cheek/lips/whatever your comfortable with), cuddles, maybe going out on a picnic, grabbing some food together, watching a movie together- Those things may seem pretty “romantic” at first but wouldn’t you do that with your friends too? I don’t get it-

If that “difference” is that your friends don’t deserve that/it’s “romantic only” then honestly you sound like a shitty fucking friend- and if the difference is that your partner is ‘more’ than your friends- well 1; that also sounds rude as hell- but 2; then please, what the fuck is it that makes them ‘more?’

The fact you’d buy a house/live with them? Wanting to have a pet? To be with them (possibly forever if referring to marriage- though I mean this in a general sense)? Wouldn’t you want to do that with your friends too? It seems so nonsensical that you’d do those things with one, but not the other.

So many people say that their partner is also their friend- in that case, wouldn’t your friends also be your partners? What differentiates the two concepts, if at all? And I don’t mean in terms of preference- I mean genuinely, what is the difference? People can date platonically, kiss platonically, have sex platonically with no strings attached, hell- people can even get married platonically now-

So... what’s the difference?

Well, idk about Romantic attraction too much, but for me, platonic attraction is wanting to be close friends with someone. My current (qp) partner and I had mutual squishes on eachother for a while where we both really wanted to be friends and it took a third party for us to formally meet.

So, it's kinda 'wow, I want to friend that person so hard-' for me?

Romantic relationships have such a heavy emphasis in our society.  So being aroace can be ostracizing.  For me I now recognize that even though I early noticed my asexuality I still thought there was something wrong with me.  I had this fear of dying alone or being along forever.  Never having a special someone.  As of now though, I don’t believe that that special someone has to be a romantic partner.  Romance doesn’t deepen a bond for me.  Genuine love and trust does.  When  I accepted my AroAceness it lifted a burden off my shoulders.  No longer did I need to worry about finding a partner.  This is who I am and it is ok.  All I really need are my friends and family.  It was relieving to cast aside that expectation of having to have a relationship.  It cast aside the shame too.  I don’t have to be ashamed that I haven’t been a relationship or that I havent’ been romantic with someone.  Those things don’t make me an adult or “grown up”.

Personally, it was just finding out the names of different attraction, realizing I had only experienced squishes, and a lot of mental interrogation to get to the realization that 'Oh, I'm aro. That's chill. Now how tf can I get out of this romantic relationship I'm not happy with-'

(Things are chill now, currently in a QPR with my best friend, my ex is still one of my close friends, and I am living happily as a partially-out aro/ace individual)

Anyone else have those really weird moments where u realize that some lgbt+ thing that is a large part of ur life is just, not known by other people? Like I identify as asexual. I used aroace in a conversation and the person I was talking to asked what it was. I have known every asexual identity for like five years. I listen to Sounds Fake But Ok(ace podcast) almost every day. It’s just so bizarre. This concept that something that’s such a big part of me or my life, and a lot of people just, don’t even know it’s an option. Also the flip side of that when like, I realize most people feel sexual attraction a lot of the time and I’m just like what in the world I cannot wrap my head around the thought process😂
