If you ever wanted to know how we do winter archaeology the answer is a cement saw, some feed bags, a pick axe and lots of muscle! This was actually taken last spring so there isn’t very much snow (nor is it very cold) but you get the idea.

New tests confirm Lake Minnetonka canoe is 1,000 years old

New tests show that an old canoe, unearthed from Lake Minnetonka 80 years ago, is more valuable and rare than first thought — estimated to be nearly 1,000 years old, the oldest of its kind in Minnesota.

This is a fantastic initiative! Archaeologist Dr. Anabel Ford has created a preservation strategy by keeping the (rain)forests around the ancient monuments intact.

"The cover of the forest canopy safeguards ancient monuments from erosion-causing elements, preserves the ecology of the surrounding Maya forest garden, and reveals structures within their natural forest garden context".

Archaeology can be used to learn so much and answer important questions. In this case, archaeologists are studying old bones to try and understand how cancer developed. Amazing!
