Major Iron Lung Movie Spoilers!!
Something I've been thinking about for a while now is; what happened after the crew found the black box?
Do you think that not only did it keep the SM-8 data but since it had a build in cockpit voice recorder it also kept every single transmission of the SM-13?
Do you think it recorded everything that happened inside?
I sometimes wonder. Did the crew boot up the black box, thinking they'd only get the SM-8 data only to find all of the transmissions of the SM-13.
What if David was one of the people to go through all of the messages? Hearing the voices of two dead people talking to each other. Yelling at one another how it wasn't fair.
Do you ever think that maybe David kept repeating some of these transmissions just to hear Ava again? The last moments he got to spend with her? Hearing her yell at Simon. Hearing her have these softer moments.
Hearing her last moments inside the SM-14?
Do you wonder if David listened to his own voice the things he said to Simon and thought that he should have done better? Should have said other things. Do you think he has regrets about saying all this shit to a man who was now dead because of them?
What about all the times contact was broken off to the main ship, all of the times Simon was alone and talking to himself? What if they all got recorded. What if David, the rest of the crew, they all got to the point where they heard Simon curse around, fixing the engine of the SM-13. The moment he says "If you find anyone... looking for Simon. Tell them I'm still alive."
Do you think that if they heard that they suddenly saw Simon as more than a convict? The moment he says his own name for the first time. David might have heard Ava say it before, but this would be the first time he would really truly hear it.
Or what if the audio also got a little crunchier after Simon hit the radio with the fire extinguisher? Their audio is still okay but Simon's starts to be a little woobly after that.
Do you think they also listened to the times when Simon just starts talking to himself? They hear him ramble on and on to thin air. Even hearing Simon say so himself that he might be talking to a phantom in his imagination. They might think he's loosing it. But then he starts talking about coordinates. Specific ones.
How he's trying to get to someone. Do you ever think that the crew started to maybe suspect something? They only hear Simon talk and yet it doesn't seem like a one sided conversation at all.
(How did they feel when they listened to the SM-8 files and heard the scientist say the exact same coordinates that Simon said.)
Do you think that they might have felt a chill when Simon says "I never told you my name."
How they reacted to Simon throwing up. Did some of them feel empathy at that point? Hearing a dead man's last moments that only got worse and worse.
Did they also hear the oxygen meter going down? The Hull Breach? The fire alarm? Do you think the crew felt shivers down their spine hearing these moments? Imagining LIVING these moments?
How about when they establish contact again and suddenly Ava's voice breaks through. How the entire talk about the SM-8 data happens. And then what follows. Simon's struggles as the sub starts to mutate.
Did the sound of the flesh and blood get picked up?
Did Ava's final moments get recorded? Her pleading Simon to get the black box. Screaming, yelling at the Eel that "if it wanted to kill her than just kill her already!". And then followed by Simon's final moments. Just his screams drowned out by the sound of chocking and gushing of blood.
Or maybe the recordings stopped once Simon pulled the black box out from the crawlspace. What if that's the last recording of the SM-13? Hearing Simon struggling to pull it free. And then nothing.
They know he died. But they don't know what happened after he got the data. It's a guessing game to the crew.
What if they also got all the picture data from the SM-13? Could they compare timestamps from the photos with audio?
What if they saw the pictures of the Eel and put together the fitting audio only to heard a terrified Simon saying he's just trying to get home. How he's trying to make light of the situation at first by muttering that "sure" under his breath.
I often wonder, if all of that data was on that black box, how everyone felt afterward about Simon.
